*MAJOR SPOILERS*Watch it for the ending The writing and direction sanked Swept Away, from the word go.
The last half of the movie is the best, and plays well. Madonna is definately more natural, and the film flows much better later on.
I enjoyed the little dance lip-sync number, but it could have been written into the script a little better. When Pepe is demanding a dance and song, I kept expecting Amber to come out with "Is the sun getting to you?" or something along those lines. Many avenues like this are not explored.
I think the film would have worked better with a more interesting power struggle in the middle of the movie. Pepe smacking around Amber, kicking her and threatening to rape her, doesn't help to enpower Pepe in the mind of the audience. Politics (capitalism vs communism) are brought up on the boat, but not mentioned once on the island. An issue that was very prominent in the original.
I would advise that people not give up on it in the first 2/3rds, because the ending is worth the time. I found it very honest, and truthful. Sad.. but true. I was even a little teary eyed when Amber saw the red envelope.
BAD POINTS: The characters were written too mean, and filmed badly. The hack job of the original script omitted several necessary topics to make the film work, and not enough creative license was taken to make up for it. GOOD POINTS: Yes, Madonna! She looks relaxed and confident. Adriano Giannini does everything he can with his role, and is very sexy, when he's not beating her up. The beautiful locations, and the reality of the ending also make the movie enjoyable.
