Monsterland
(2020)

Acting was great, stories depressing
Episode One was captivating, if not bleak. But bleak is a good descriptor of the human condition. It spoke of inescapable situations and dark outcomes from poor decisions. I am not sure if I can make it through all the episodes. Episode 2 tugs at the heart because the main character is trapped at a young age in a world he has little to no control over. I think it's an anthology I will not binge on, but take it a little at a time.

Afflicted
(2013)

Not your average POV supernatural film
This film was a pleasant surprise after watching so many movies that POV. Since Blair Witch, I've been disappointed at the horror movies that had no plot, but depending on the camera view.

Without posting any spoilers, this is a film that starts out as two friends (one with a potentially fatal brain disorder) deciding to document their travels through Europe. Unfortunately, a one night stand results in terrifying results.

Braid
(2018)

Oh those childhood friendships
Had never heard of this movie, but immediately recognized the actress from CAM (another goodie), but I like trying lesser known movies. I don't want to give a recap of the plot, as that's not a review. Just let me say these three actresses carried this strange plot beautifully. Expect the unexpected. Loved it!

How It Ends
(2018)

How it ends? Realistically, that's how.
I saw so many reviews on here of people who wanted the apocalypse wrapped up and tied with a big bow for them. Do you think if and when it happens you will be provided all the answers? Will you know what happened to friends and family or will you be living moment to moment like Will and Sam? Yeah, I hope they get a happy ending, but maybe they won't. It's a lot like the world we are living in. Reality. Hollywood gave you some excellent actors and an ending that makes you wonder. Deal with it and move on.

Paranoid
(2016)

Small town cops take on big time mystery
Things start start off with a seemingly unprovoked random murder of a local doctor while she's with her son on a playground with dozens of witnesses. Seems open and closed case, until it isn't. Lots of twists and intrigue as well as despicable characters to balance out the likable, more predictable police personalities. Definitely worth a binge watch!

Imprint
(2007)

So glad I checked this film out!
This was one of those movies that showed up on my Because You Watched list on Netflix. Of course, the movie I had watched, Witch Hunt, was not remotely similar to this film, although it was also good in its own right. What made me give this movie I had not heard of before was when I saw it was from filmmaker Chris Eyre. I am a fan of his film Smoke Signals. The story was engaging and the solution to the mystery was a kicker. Plus the current hardships faced by real life on the reservations is eye opening. Great flick. Don't pass this mystery by.

Everlasting
(2016)

Well made and heartbreaking
Heartbreaking in its being so devastatingly relatable to what we see in the news every day. The acting was very real, especially as the parent of a rebellious, emotionally lost 22 year old daughter and the stepmom of an independent 20 year old stepdaughter starting out in the world in a city with a lot of crime. I love indie films and this one does not disappoint. Interesting way to get across very personal point of view.
