The Last of Us: Long, Long Time
(2023)
Episode 3, Season 1

Just beautiful
Come for the action, stay for the fine acting, excellent writing and deep humanity.

This is a beautiful side story that could have been a movie all on it's own. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett excelled with nuanced sympathetic performances.

I love the way the TV series format has been used to insert the short story genre into visual form. The fact this is nestled into a TV series means that so much of the back story has been already developed so the scene is set for a spare, simple story with deep tenderness.

The Last of Us continues to take us into the hearts of the characters and to grieve with them.

Generally 9/10 is the best I'll ever give any rating because I want to reserve the 10/10 category for media that not only is excellent as a piece of art but also changes the way I see the world. I hope that this might be a 10/10 for others.

Inhumans
(2017)

Iwan Rheon is illustrative of how bad this show is!
Mr Rheon's Ramsay Bolton showed us how well he could bring twisted evil to the screen. There can be no doubt he has the acting ability and the sheer screen presence to make us hate and fear his characters.

It is illustrative then that Mr Rheon's Maximus is bland and vaguely pathetic. He has been let down by a very poor script (visible to us) and what must also be atrocious directing.

What a terrible thing to do to a gifted actor's career. I hope this will not stop us from seeing Iwan's gifts in other projects in the future.

I normally enjoy superhero TV and movies. I have, I think, a high ability to suspend disbelief an forgive a multitude of sins in the name of a fun, effects filled romp.

This was boring. IT was disjointed. It was nonsensical. It was embarrassing.

Oh dear.

American Gods

Finding Ricky Whittle captivating
Ian McShane is as always a delight. This was expected and he is delivering. Pity he doesn't get to beak the 4th wall.

I had no knowledge of Mr Whittle and am finding his physical presence captivating. I find that some guys can be big but there isn't that sense of coiled danger... Mr Whittle brings this in spades.

If only he could have been cast as Jack Reacher instead of Tiny Cruise.

1 episode in we are seeing some pleasant ominous foreshadowing and the start of the slow reveal.

We'll see if the series can live up to its promises!

If you have seen Aliens you could give this a miss
The army is sent in with two advisers to check out a strange enemy.

Advisors: Uber-engineer-scientist guy and a female CIA agent who doesn't appear to know how to fire a weapon but speaks the local lingo. Now if her role could have been more Ripleyish then I would've given the movie another star. How long do we have to keep being fed such uninspiring female roles?

It echoes Aliens very strongly. The adviser in the RV monitors the platoons going in with helmet cams. Soldiers start to flat line. "You've got to pull you people out now!" Army officer ignores the Uber-engineer-scientist... and more guys get killed. They fall back to the RVs. RVs punch it. Knock cars out of the way but eventually fail leaving our people to have to take to foot. Any of this sound familiar? You even have child survivors who fist bump the friendly soldier... An eventually the nest is found... wait for it... in a power station. And once the climax has been had and we are all safe again... breathe out... the Uber-engineer-scientist guy destroys the remaining monsters to stop them from falling into the hands of the company... I mean the military.

No Carter-Burke equivalent. If they copied the rest I am not sure why he was left out.

great special effects and some great facial hair.

I wasn't bored and at least the monsters didn't mostly come at night... mostly.

Westworld: The Bicameral Mind
(2016)
Episode 10, Season 1

Holy (expletive deleted)!
I believe this is the one and only 10 I have ever given!

A wonderful exploration of what is mind in the guise of clever narrative!

I think Hopkins and Woods and Newton were amazing with fine supporting roles from Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris and Jimmi Simpson.

It is about time Jeffrey Wright gets a lead role. I hope his performance in Westworld can support him to be as valued as his skills deserve!

The final sequence with a haunting rendition of Radiohead's Exit Music. was masterful and hugely satisfying. I checked the lyrics and found:

Wake From your sleep The drying of Your tears Today We escape We escape

Pack And get dressed Before your father hears us Before All hell Breaks loose

Robert escapes and Wyatt has a chance!

Wynonna Earp
(2016)

Oh dear.
What an awful waste of time.

A terribly predictable plot... You can almost predict every body movement that the actors make let alone the script and story line. The only unpredictable things are the ones that make so little sense they jolt you out of the story. Like when in episode 2 (I think) Dolls out of the blue (remember that they don't like each other at this point) caresses the side of Wynonna's neck and head (as a ruse to plant a tracking device). A very intimate caress. No woman that I wasn't at least dating would have stood for that! He could have just given it to her... There was no reason for a ruse...

This TV series is full of clichés. Example: Someone for no reason turning away from a person while talking to them only to discover that they have disappeared when they turn back... spooky! (not). That is about as sophisticated as this show gets.

Terrible effects! I mean we are talking monsters from 1970s Dr Who kind of monsters! I gave up after 3 episodes and skipped through. My goodness the tentacle monster from the last episode is truly comical.

Oh how I wish that I could believe that that comical effect was intentional.

Gah!!!

The only thing that raised it from one star was the occasional witty line from the main character.

Broadchurch
(2013)

Crime show with a heart
I have been loving the emotional depth of this show! So often families of murder victims exist merely to give clues for the eventual solution but in Broadchurch we are exposed to the grief of a bereft and torn family.

I have never paid much attention to Olivia Coleman before but what an amazing actress! She will be added to my list of actors to follow from now on! She plays Ellie Miller a local detective who is not only charged with investigating the murder but who also knows personally the various suspects and players in the drama. An interesting mix and a fruitful tension!

I am very glad for her character because Miller's superior, DI ALec Hardy (David Tennant), is very much the clichéd grumpy dysfunctional detective we have all seen in a hundred other cop dramas. Having said that he plays his role well. If we must have this trope then Tennant brings some new life to it which is a tribute to his screen presence.

The setting is small town Dorset(Southern England). The village setting with its entangled relationships is fertile soil for the twists and tangles of the story.

After 6 episodes I am very much involved with the characters from the town of Broadchurch and am hoping the producers of this show will let it come to the end of its story arc in the scheduled 8 episodes.
