Django Unchained
(2012)

Very Enjoyable Despite the 'N' word!
First off, I'm not a huge fan of Tarantino, I feel he as a director has branded himself very well, so a section of the film world instantly love his work no matter how self indulgent. Therefore, when I heard all the positive reviews for Django I remained unfazed when I watched it, by the time I'd finished the film...I was in complete agreement.

Despite the ridiculous use of the N word throughout (yes, it's historically accurate but there's still no need to use it in every sentence!!) the film has a great combination of bloody action and a sharp sense of humour. Foxx is likable enough as Django but he easily overshadowed by the AMAZING Waltz who deserved every accolade awarded.

The only two negatives are the running time (it could easily be 20 minutes shorter) and Tarantino's bizarre cameo..WTF?!

Overall, great film but probably don't watch it with parents!

Dead of the Nite
(2013)

Full of Jumps
I watched Dead of the Nite at the Gold Coast Film Festival in Australia and enjoyed the film from the Hitchcock style opening credits all the way to the great twist at the end.

The film is an unusual combination of traditional filmmaking and the found footage style. It works very well as it pulls you from one storyline to the other without taking you too far out of caring for the characters.

The best thing about the film is Tony Todd. Although he's only in it for about 15 minutes he steals every scene he's in and his voice truly is legendary!

The young cast are OK, though at times it seems a little am-dram, and the night vision can grate on you a little, but the cutting to the traditional daytime stuff helps break it up. Also thankfully it's not all shaky cams that make you sick. The pacing is thoughtful and builds tension, and though the director uses a few cliché tactics to create the jumps, they still work very effectively.

Overall I gave it a 10/10 (which is based on the fact they made it for only $20,000) but it is more as 7/10 though still worth a watch when it comes out on DVD.

Tattoos: A Scarred History
(2009)

Shocking, Mind Blowing Doc That Makes You Think!!
I watched Tattoos: A Scarred History at a special charity event. As someone without any tattoos I didn't really have that much interest in it, but since it was for charity I went along. The film opens with possibly the most absorbing sequence I've ever seen in the cinema. A thing called the human harp certainly sets the tone for what the film was about.

After the initial shock the film settles to follow a woman's journey to discover why tattoos have become so popular, I found some of the topics obvious while others were riveting and raised many questions of my own. After a selection of 'celebrity' interviews (including the late David Carradine) 20 minutes in, the film turns into a gripping, can't stop watching documentary covering all angles of a topic I didn't realize was so massive!

Probably more shocking than any clips of self mutilation or a particularly graphic tattoo of Princess Diana, was the investigation into eBay allowing the sales of dodgy equipment and the abuse of people with body modification, it really made me look at people with facial tattoos/piercings in a whole new light.

I would certainly recommend watching this if it gets a general release, not only is it raising money for a good cause, but also really makes you look at society as a whole and how we judge simply on appearance.

The Dark Knight
(2008)

Outstanding
I try to avoid films when they first come out as they are always surrounded by extreme hype so I've just watch it...WOW!!!

The film is a non-stop, roller-coaster ride. I've read about people saying Ledger only got the Oscar because he's dead. How wrong could they be, he deserves EVERY award he got. His performance is simply mesmerizing and steals the film. Nolan handles the pacing perfectly and the sound is A+...the moments of silence during the chaos are deafening. The effects are faultless and the dark sets really draw you into the crime riddled world of Gotham city. Eckhart is superb and if it was for Ledger,. would surely of been nominated at well. The ONLY negative is Bale's gruff voice and the fact that the Academy are a bunch of snobs for boycotting the film.

Easily Film of Last Year!
