Hellraiser
(1987)

Hellraiser is a classic horror movie
Second time watching Hellraiser but I forgot many details, so it felt like the first time

The story railed me in from the begging when frank unlocks the box revealing pinhead and the cenobots.

The story is very dark and a true nightmare for the family. I was scared several scenes specially when kristy unlocks the box and the other dimension is revealed to her.

The design of the cenobites was well done and I think pinhead is still one of the most terrifying characters in the history of horror.

Some of the acting i felt was a bit forced but nothing that bother me to much.

The special effects were great and holds up after so many years.

This movies make wants me see the sequels and know more about pinheads and his history.

Pet Sematary
(2019)

Pet semantary was nothing special
The movie was ok. The problem I have with this and most modern films is the cameras are always so close and the film cuts way to much. I wish the camera was left still so the audience can get a sense of the place. The other problem is that this films And most horror films now a days have that same bleak color grade. I've never seen the original movie but watching the trailer ruined the story. The actor were good specially the cat. My favorite scene was the birthday scene. I am are sure the original film is better and can't compare. Pet semantary was nothing special to me and left the theater not excited for it.

Creed II
(2018)

Creed 2 is to long and contains unnecessary drama
First movie I've seen in the rocky franchise.

The drama between creed and wife felt boring and unessasry.

I thought the Russian or Ukraine fighter was the only character that was interested and had a better arch.

Thought the movie was way to long.

Will not be watching again.

Grade: D+

You Were Never Really Here
(2017)

You were never really here make you be there
You were never really here

This is an excellent movie. I liked it so much that I wish I was the director. This is the first film I've seen from Lynne Ramsay and I am interested in seeing what else is in her filmography.

The movie sets the tone with the introduction. We know it will be at the very least a very dramatic movie and what it turns out to be is a very violent and disturbing film where you won't even believe what you are watching.

What I like the most is how the film is cut and doesn't try to explain the audience everything. We the viewer must watch and sometimes interpret what is happening since the film has little dialogue but I believe that great film try to show visually instead of relying on dialogue creating a well balance between the visual and the dialogue.

Now cinematography, some shots are beautifully shot like the scene where he walks out holding the little girl or the scene where he is under water even when a character has a bag over their head trying to suffocate

Joaquin phoenix does an excellent job portraying Joe as a man with a traumatic past. His physical appearances fits well with his character. The contrast between the dark emotions and his caring attitude towards his mother gives him a third dimensional feel.

The filmmakers were not scared to make bold choices by raising the stakes to the maximum. This makes the audience care about the story and you get to rides with Joe on a job gone badly.

I loved the movie and I can't wait to see it again to catch details that I might have miss. Grade A

Halloween
(2018)

Halloween offers a fun ride with Michael Myers
When I go see a slasher film I want to see kills and gore a lot of gore. On top of that I would like to be engage completely. Halloween offer me that, From the moment that they visit Michàel in the mental health prison to when he goes on his killing spree in Halloween. The killings were creative. Michàel Myers was brutal and pure evil in this one. Some of my favorite scenes were the baby sit scene. The scene where You see Michàel waking around the house and later appears inside the house in the same shot without cut.

I tried watching the rob zombie Halloween and I thought it was boring, compare to this is engaging, creative and completely fun ride.

Grade B

Sunset Blvd.
(1950)

Sunset Blvd is a star of a film
I normally do not write with spoilers but I figure that my review will get lost with the other reviews plus this a movie filmed in the 1950s so my exposure will be minimum. What I will do here is to write about the story and ask myself what did i enjoy it.

Well let's start in the beginning where the police find the dead body in the pool. Like many other movies I've seen the voice over narration really pulls you right into the story. Not only that but the black and white makes it a gorgeous film to look at. So right in the beginning you know this is a well crafted story. This is the oldest movie i seen that uses the technique of showing you the death of a character and later rewind back and show you how they got to that point. But it felt right for the movie.

Joe Gillis is a poor screenwriter trying to make into hollywood. He does not have the means to sustain his vehicle. They are people who are trying to repossess his vehicle and so he tries bypass them by hiding in what looks like in abandoned mansion. But soon we realize that is not a abandoned mansion but that gloria Swanson lives there, a old Hollywood actresses in the silent era who longs to work in cinema again but is no longer relevant to the new era. There Joe Gillis starts working on her script that is full of silent era technique and consider to be a bad script. While living there for free Gloria Swanson become attached and Seemingly falls in love with him joe Gillis. The problem is that Joe Gillis does not share same feeling and therefore start to feel trapped in the life. The dilemma: He then must make a decision to be with Swanson and her lavish life but deal with her delusional fame and her fall to grace as a Hollywood actress or escape with a young screenwriter who is young and pretty but has nothing to offer for a stable career.

The movie pacing is excellent . first we start caring for joe because he is broke and needs money. Then later we get interested in the life of Gloria Swanson and little by little we figure out the possessive character she is. That adds more drama for Joe because we see how unhappy he really is. This add more drama when he decides to leave at night and see another women. Until the final showdown where gloria goes to the extreme to stop joe from leaving.

Norma Desmond acting as Gloria Swanson was outstanding and exquisite, she stole the show and is deserving of my full admiration. Her role as a fall to grace Hollywood star was believe and we pitied her from the moment we realize that paramount did not want her up until she kills Joe and we see her outbreak to insanity. The scenes were she is preparing herself for the comeback to Hollywood really did hurt my soul. And of course that ending. When she steps foot descending from her bedroom to her destiny as criminal. The lights were switched on, the cameras were rolling and she was in front of the camera for the very last time. The euphoria that she felt in being that Hollywood star.

Grade: A

Hell Fest
(2018)

Hellfest is a good slasher film.
I enjoy the movie.

We no longer get slasher film anymore. Not like we used to back in the days. Kind of like like we don't see trick or treating anymore.

The hunted houses were creative. Made me want to go to hellfest. Nothing like the hunted house I am used to in Halloween horror nights.

The serial killer was good. I like the way we get to see him arrive to hellfest.

The death were ok. I wish they added more grousom death. Only two were good. The other were cheap and quick.

My favorite scene of the movie was. Well the hammer scene. The bathroom scene. And the syringe scene.

The movie was very entertaining. Kept my interest until the very end.

The ending was a good Closure to the film. It was the right ending.

Night School
(2018)

Night school is a typical formulatic comedy
Night school is exactly what you expect it to be and nothing else.

I feel like I am playing a soundtrack on repeat with these formulatic comedy movie

I have not much to say about this. It is not bad. It has morals about honesty and perseverence

Kevin heart playing his same persona.

Favorite scene? The heist for the midterm term and the barbecue store scene with the fiancé.

I was a little bored for a while but I guess it has an alright ending.

My grade rating : C

Papillon
(2017)

Papillion is one of the best movies I've seen in 2018.
I went to the theater without any prior knowledge of the story of Papillon. Meaning that I never saw the original movie. I had a blank slate. But I am glad I didn't because the film provided an experience.

Sentence to life in imprisonment for a crime that he did not commit in a hellish place impossible to escape. A man will spend a lifetime trying to escape. What a plot.

A movie about friendship, about destiny and the pursue for freedom, The cinematography is excellent. The color of the film. The set design.

One scene that keep popping into my mind is when the prisoners are first welcome to prison and the warden is telling them about the rules they must follow.

The warden was an excellent antagonist. The choice of customer design made him look like dictator who lack any remorse. Just looking at him you knew he had no empathy for anybody.

And of course the movie executed brilliantly in increasing the stakes as the film progress to lead to a finale that will grab and twist your emotions and even make you cry.

I left the theater feeling alive and yes I will recommend this movie to anybody who likes a good film .

Papillion is one of the best movies I've seen in 2018.

The Nun
(2018)

The nun is a mediocre horror movie
. How can you go wrong with a diabolical nun. Well it seems like they manage to do it here.

the nun had no screen time.what a wasted opportunity. I hate when the antagonist doesn't do any harm to any protagonist.

The only scene that caught my attention was the opening scene with the nun falling and the birds flying. I wish that they would have stayed with that type of imagery through out the movie.

Instead they give us a mediocre non interesting Canadian french character with a British accent . A fragile aspiring nun. and plenty of dark scenes that add no value to the horror.

I think the writer and director should learn from the exorcist (1973) in how to make a diabolical character interesting.

White Boy Rick
(2018)

White boy Rick transported me back to the 80s
I like White boy rick. The casting was done correctly. Rick was believable as a teenager gangster who gets caught up in the drug business. I believe the chemistry between the Father and the son. The story progress well adding a punch of drama one after the other until we get the conclusion of his life.

I like the set design a lot. The music, the city, the clothes haircut and all that. Transported me to a time I did get to experience.

I recommend this movie to my family and friends.

-B

Assassination Nation
(2018)

Assasination Nation is provocative and entertaining
When the film showed the first person who got hacked I was completely glued to the screen.

I was able to related to many characters in the movie since the topic of social media, relationship, school, fitting in, instant messaging is all to common in my life.

The pacing of the movie was adequate. The cinematography was great, specially some of the camera movements. One scene in particular that caught my attention was the bat scene .

I like how they handle the last act. Thats how i like my movies to finish off with a powerful and dramatic blow .

I already recommend this movie to some of my coworker at work.

8/10

The Predator
(2018)

Predator is a boring movie
Did not care for the character. Only the kid was somewhat interesting.

I am not the biggest fan of action films so maybe I am to harsh. But in my opinion the director and writer should study jaws to see how to make character interesting in a horror movie

Wasted opportunity to utilize the predators in an better plot.

Mediocre editing and cinematography.

Left the theater feeling nothing.

2/10
