X-Ray: Selected Satyajit Shorts
(2021)

Promising premise but a downhill journey
Ray started off with a promising premise. Satyajit Ray's stories being reimagined in modern times. My expectations were in the lines of how Sherlock changed the way of how we look at the beloved Conan Doyle characters. And with the gritty and unsettling first episode Forget me not, the expectations found some ground.

But it was a downhill journey after that. Bahrupiya was somehow saved by a brilliant Kay Kay Menon, even the versatile Manoj Bajpayee couldn't divert the mind from the gaping plot holes of Hangama kyun hai Barpa; and the series hit rock bottom with spotlight which in my opinion was a total meaningless disaster. Too much effort was put into giving misplaced references to Ray and too little into actually thinking about the plot.

This whole experience can be summarised in one sentence: Satyajit Ray didn't deserve this.

A cinematic experience to treasure
Srijit Mukherjee's fifth directorial venture based on Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel was a treat to watch from beginning to end. The attention to detail and innovative camera angles right from the start bore an indication that something special was in store. Srijit twisted and modified the original story to make it relevant in the present times, interspersed it with enough comic moments to make the movie thoroughly entertaining and bound everything together in a non linear timeline seamlessly. Prosenjit Chatterjee delivered in style as Kakababu, the larger than life handicapped yet jovial protagonist and all the other actors were brilliant in their respective roles. The vast deserts and the inherent mystery of Egypt was captured with panache and along with the mesmerizing background score, made the big screen experience one to treasure.

All in all, it was really fulfilling seeing our childhood hero come to life and save the day in style in a scintillating adventure. At the same time it made me a little sad thinking that there won't be another new kakababu novel in the pages of Pujabarshiki Anandamela....

Abohomaan
(2009)

Abohoman-- A gem in Bangla cinema
Abohoman-- means flowing.... And the story keeps flowing, into the past, takes a peek at the present and goes back into the past again.. It is this fluidity which keeps the spirit of the film alive.. Right from the first scene, the comparison between the bygone days and the present day has been drawn.. Two parallel stories- one about the situation after the demise of world renowned film director Aniket dies and the other while shooting for his film Binodini...

According to tinsel town gossip this story was loosely based on the relationship between Satyajit Ray and Madhabi Mukherjee... But in this narrative Rituporno transcends the story to a greater height, make it more than a tale of scandal.. The dilemma between the characters, the personal journeys, everything has been portrayed with a certain glitz.

The two stories often get intermixed intentionally to obscure the boundaries between the characters of Sikha and Binodini. The acting has been top notch from all the actors, with a special mention to Dipankar Dey and Ananya Chatterjee..

This film is not above flaws,, and draws much from Rituporno's own earlier film The last Lear.. the editing has been lackluster with the dubbing not being proper,,.. But all this minor flaws can be overlooked considering the heart of the film.. Such type of films should be encouraged and it definitely deserved the National award.

When dreams intermingle with reality
What happens when dream mixes with reality and their intermingling creating a world so unearthly, a dream so vivid, a nightmare so dark that the very fabric of the cosmos is being threatened by it? This is what paprika is.A dream, two dreams, many many dreams all of which verge in on a huge delusional nightmare.

The main thread of the story is 'DC mini' a next generation technology which lets one to see his dreams and others to enter that dream. we have seen infinite times before that a virtually innocuous thing may turn deadly, and exactly that happens here. Dream terrorists rise, people penetrate into other people's dream and try to control them, and amidst all these our central characters run within dreams and realities whose distinction is being constantly blurred.

Paprika is not about reality and not about dream, it's about the mixture of the two and hence can't be totally comprehended by neither the conscious nor the subconscious mind. It will leave you in a dreamy state.

Recommended to all those who like David lynch's stuff, Miyazaki films, the fall, Tim Burton's big fish etc.

Identity
(2003)

well, identify the true identity
Rain splattering down all over, and blood giving it a close competition..... 10 ppl stuck in a dingy motel, one severely injured, one cop ,one convict and several shady characters included... and as expected suddenly a competition begins of who can get killed before whom and the countdown begins to give the gold medal to the struggling survivor....... But all of a sudden enters a mental patient, hence changing the entire ball game..... none the less, it's very entertaining.... and the twist in the tail,, really twists it painfully hard,, overall, nice thriller film...

It did have it's funny moments though-- how can u kill someone by an overspeeding car when ur speedometer reads zero? How can a broken lock hold a door when 2 ppl were trying to choke-slam it, undertaker style?? there r many more, but i don't wanna give the spoilers here..

So it's recommended to all those who liked films like-- shutter island, stay, Mulholland drive etc...

Mary and Max.
(2009)

A step forward,,animation is not only for bringing a smile
I wanted to watch a light hearted funny film the night before my exams.. So i chose an animation film, based upon my previous experiences with animation, which have almost always lightened me up..... But this one was a hell lot different....this was may 2nd claymotion film,, and i noticed that these kinda movies give a more lasting impression... just like molding a bit of soft clay.... This movie id severely depressing,,, and i mean it in a positive way.. the way max and mary's characters were etched out,, one colourless, the other multicolored,,although both their worlds were virtually colourless,,, the way their relationship develops over a series of letters,, how it moves with passing time........ this was a result of a very close observation of many different characters and arguably a work of great precision....

Byôsoku 5 senchimêtoru
(2007)

a tragic poem, an eternal masterpiece
This was like a poem flowing.....

flowing through the flying cherry blossoms, touching the drifting snow flakes., trying to meet with the sky riding on the wings of the bird...............

a poem which fell as tears from the eyes of akari...

a poem which was etched on the snow splattered glass window of the train through which takaki's distant gaze marked his eternal wait..

a poem which brought people closer and then forced them apart....

a poem which sang the testimony to time, creating wounds and creating an illusion of them being healed...

a poem written on the tracks of the lives of everyone,, moving 5 centimeters away from each other.. each second....

Janghwa, Hongryeon
(2003)

guilt and remorse redefined
This film started just like any other horror film-2 cute girls,a horrid past, some frightening moments thrown here and there.....

but as the film runs on, precisely a 1hr 2 minutes, it completely turns on it's head..

reality becomes obscure, illusions come in thick and fast,, and waves of dazed confusion hit the mind, one after the another.... and when the realization dawns, it turns out to be one of the most horrifying tragedies I've ever encountered..

the feeling of guilt and remorse has never been portrayed like this on the screen...

this is a horror film, but moreover this is a moving drama...

Benny & Joon
(1993)

Johnny and joon
JOHNNY AND JOON !!

Tender and heartwarming, these two words can describe this movie precisely... A mentally ill girl joon and her brother benny's lives take a turn when sam comes into their lives,, under very queer circumstances..... Joon falls in love with sam who does quirky things and has a knack of messing up situations... and as the story unveils through various events,we get to know all the characters better and in a way connect with them..

Johnny Depp is awesome as usual,, the innocence and dedication with which he carries the character of sam is exemplary....Mary is completely believable as Joon... so if u need a refreshing cute story, go for this one
