Spaceman
(2024)

A thought provoking movie
So this has Adam Sandler in, it's obviously a goof ball comedy. Well this is anything but that!

Actually I was surprised at how well Sandler can actually act. Maybe this is really where his talents lie.

I'm a bit confused as to want to make of this movie. It's a bit off an oddball. It's really about self reflection and how our actions and feelings impact on ourselves and others. It's a love story of sorts in space although it's more than that. It's plays to our psychological side, we never really know what is real or a figment of imagination.

The effects are good as is the acting. It's not a 100mph movie but more or a stroll. It had enough to keep you engaged and I put a lot of that down to Sandlers acting.

Not one you will revisit over and over but worth a watch.

Mr Bates vs. The Post Office
(2024)

Best series I've seen in a very long time!
The court case is all over the news at the moment so I thought I would give it a try. I must be honest I didn't pay much attention back in mid 2000's when the prosecutions were happening. It was a mixture of being too young and not interested.

I was therefore totally shocked at the events which took place, this is based off a true story. The acting is quite simply fantastic. The lead Toby Jones is a revelation as Alan Bates. Monica Bates gives an emotional and quite simply brilliant portrayal as Jo Hamilton.to be fair, all the cast give excellent performances.

The pacing is spot on, so it keeps you engaged and interested from the word go. It's powerful and emotional which you rarely get from tv dramas.

Billy Elliot
(2000)

Emotional, gritty and uplifting!
I fist watched this as when I was 19. It was okay, nothing special but watchable.

I decided it was time some 23 years later to watch it again with my children, mainly because they go to ballet and dance.

I wasn't prepared for the movie I was about to watch again, for the second time in my life. I quickly realised this was a story of depression during the miners strike in the 80's, a story of poverty, a family falling apart and a glimmer of hope for an 11 year old boy. Maybe because I'm now older and have had life experiences that this film now connected with me.

There are some fantastic performances on show here. Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot's Dad) should be commended for his portrayal of a struggling father who has lost almost everything including his wife. His performance is nothing short of perfection.

Kudos has to go to Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot). This can't have been an easy role but I think he gives a great performance.

Don't be fooled, this isn't a kids film about dancing, which was my mistake. It's an emotional rollercoaster which is harsh, gritting but ultimately of hope.

A gem which I didn't understand in 2000 but do now.

Planet Earth III
(2023)

A new benchmark in documentary making!
Everytime David Attenborough has a new TV show, it's a must watch!

There has been many fantastic series such as blue planet. This sets a new level is natural history documentaries.

It is breathtaking, upsetting and enlightening all at the same time. The camera work is truely outstanding. The musics and narration really makes you feel like you are in the show.

I can't say good enough trying about this series. It is simply outstanding!

I'm on episode 3 and each episode is slightly better than the last. How this is achievable is beyond me.

David Attenborough is a national treasure who has and does so much for the natural environment. We can all learn somethings from his attitude as us 'humans' are slowly killing this planet.

Where the Crawdads Sing
(2022)

Never heard of it but actually quite good
Sunday night and we decided to watch a film. My wife who has read the book and liked it said there was a movie adaptation. She explained it to me and it sounded okay so as a 44 year old man, I would give it a go.

It was much better than expected, actually quite an unusual film especially the setting. The actual foundations of the story won't win an original score but lots of little adaptations made it seem more niche.

I thought the main lead was very good, really made the role her own. To be fair all the characters were good and compelling. The pacing was a little slow in places but that's sort of part of the storyline.

So the acting was good, the story was solid and I must say the cinematography was excellent.

Not a romcom, not a baller but a sort of arty film which was much better than a lot of over-budgeted superhero guff I've seen recently.

Give it a go, you might surprise yourself.

Ps - critics know diddily squat!!

American History X
(1998)

Powerful!
This is a 90's film which passed me by at the time. It was only until later in life a friend told me to watch this movie. When I did, it shocked me in a good way.

This is a powerful film, took me by surprise. It's quite simply an emotional rollercoaster! The acting is fantastic, from the lead to the extras. Ed Norton is quite simply brilliant in this movie. Ed Furlong best known for T2 is also brilliant! The score is emotional and powerful, the pace of this movie is breathtaking. I dare anyone to watch and not to get sucked in.

It's an overlooked movie but shouldn't be, it really is great.

9/10 for me and a strong 9/10.

Time Bandits
(1981)

Classic cult movie.
I watched this a lot in the 80's/ 90's when I was young. It's an odd but yet enjoyable film which as you get older makes more sense in the Monty Python World.

I think some people just don't get this film which is fine as it is a bit, well bonkers and does have a take on religion.

My personal opinion is it's a fantastic film with lots of action, adventure and weirdness as you would expect from the Director.

As it is not heavily reliant on CGI the story telling us to be spot on (like most films before 1990). I really liked the story and the pace of the movie. The characters are likeable and feels realistic. Not seen it for 20/30 years until last night when it was on TV. It took be back to my childhood and recreated that's weird fantasy again which most films can't.

I really like this film, very different and a real cult classic.

Must watch for anyone who thinks outside the box.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
(2022)

Made for a sentimental reasons but all over the place!
Well I gave BP:WF a go as it was of Disney. I didn't hold much hope because I never felt like it could be a stand-alone movie. Well sorry to say I was right. The story is all over the place and quite frankly boring. The action is good as all Marvel movies are but it just felt like it was thrown together. Pulling at people heartstrings doesn't make a good movie I'm afraid.

The main protagonist is no longer with us which is a big loss. The remaining cast are okay, I mean okay. They do a job but there is no depth to any of them. The story is somewhat bloated. It's far too long and there are some real pacing issues. I found myself nodding off a few times during the movie because I had little interest on what was going on. If you are going to continue with a story without the main lead, you really need some character depth and direction. I didn't find it funny, sad or entertaining so what's to like? Given Marvels success in recent years, this should have been much better. I can't believe people are going this anything better than a 5/10. I've seems all 8.9 and 10/10 on here. Come on people, it's hardly Star Wars, Shawshank or The Godfather!

All in all a very weak and long film.

No spoilers here but one to avoid unless you are really bored and have 3hrs to kill or sleep.

Avatar: The Way of Water
(2022)

A remake of the original but not as good.
Well, what did I expect? Great visuals but the story was poor. It was a remake but not as good. It was a bit silly and a bit boring. We've seen it all before I'm afraid to say. Talking to Whales?! Come on, this isn't a cartoon. I just didn't like how they pieces this film together.

3 hrs Nat - Geo is all good but I can watch David Attenborough at home.

Not terrible but just obvious and boring. It didn't develop the story at all which is probably why there are another three films planned.

James Cameron has done some amazing films but this is not one off them I'm afraid.

Another three films! It will ruin the first one I'm afraid to say. Think Star Wars!

Krull
(1983)

This could have been a great!
A classic 80's movie with fantasy and sorcery. The concept is great and I'm sure may kids like me loved this movie at the time.

What I've realised is it's a bit slower paced with quite crude and ponderous action. It does have some classic scenes which make this movie enjoyable but just not enough.

With a bit more thought and money this could have been one of the greats. It need a remake!

Still an enjoyable family movie but could have been so much more.

The Last Starfighter
(1984)

A childhood B movie classic!
This was the first movie I saw which had lots of computer effects. I think it was actually made that way but I could be wrong.

As a child I really liked the movie, it doesn't have great depth but it moved along at a good enough pace. It jumps on the back of the Star Wars era but it's a B movie so lacks in development and SPX but it has the same formula.

This was on at Xmas 2021 in the UK. I sat down with my 6 and 8 year olds to watch it and they liked it. Yes the SPX are dated but the hero story will always be a winner!

A nostalgic place in my heart.

The Last Leg
(2012)

This is crap!
What can I say about this. Absolutely rubbish! Not funny, not clever, nothing.

Never normally in on a Friday and now I know why.

The host is simply terrible, no charisma, not funny and annoying!

Might pick up the dog poo in the garden which will be much more entertaining!

The Witcher
(2019)

Don't listen to the haters, a good fantasy series!
I have never heard of The Witcher so when it was recommended to me, I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. It's quite dark but has the right amount of story and fantasy to make it interesting.

Season 2 is better than series 1. Yes it does jump about a little but I thought it was great watch. Lots of cool fighting and fantasy creatures.

It's not for everyone as Dirty Dancing isn't for me. If you like action/fantasy this is the best series I have seen since GoT.

Can't wait for series 3.

Wonder Woman 1984
(2020)

I wanted to rip my eyes out!!
What the hell, this is terrible! The plot, special effects, pacing, acting....!

I honestly found myself cringing throughout this car crash of a movie. The acting is really really bad, the main lead, Gal Godot cannot act, simple as that! My wooden chair acts more natural!

The story is, well pathetic, in fact stupid and boring. The CGI is from the 90's, no wait Terminator 2 effects are light years ahead of this rubbish!

To sum it up, it makes Star Wars - The Phantom Menace looks like an all time oscar classic!

I will sum this movie up in one word, GUFF!

Never again.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
(2007)

Great movie and book
I recently watched this film and really liked it. It's my favourite one so far. 😃

Cosmic Sin
(2021)

You have got to be kidding me!
Train journey to London so thought I would download this. It has Bruce Willis in and sounded like it could be quite good.

Well, from the word go this acting is simply terrible, I mean awful! The story - first 10 mins I thought, yeah I can get over the acting it sounds interesting, wrong, really wrong. It is a load of rubbish so much so I turned it off after an hour.

It is cheesy, shallow, boring with actor development, no depth, nothing. The best thing about this was when I turned it off.

I can get onboard with brain dead chewing gum movies, even enjoy them but there is nothing entertaining at all.

Do yourself a favour if you are thinking about watching this, watch paint dry instead. Much more entertaining!

Raya and the Last Dragon
(2021)

Could have been great but was just okay.
Watched this with the kids today on holiday. After watching Moana, which we all thought was great, we were looking forward our movie night.

The SPX are fantastic as you would expect from Disney. The idea is great but it simply doesn't deliver. The dragon is just annoying in dragon and human form. A baby? Come on, even my 8 year old was confused and laughed at how silly it was and not in a good way.

The story is just boring with the pacing all over the place.

It should have been great, it really should have but it's just Meh...

The Lost World: Jurassic Park
(1997)

Watching all the JP's with my kids and this was not what I remember!
It's 2021, lockdown is ending but I still find myself having movie night with the kids.

So we are onto JP after Harry Potter. So we put JP 1 on about a month a go and I have to say, still a really enjoyable film. We all really liked it and the SPX still good up well today. So I have been pestered to get JP2 ready. Tonight was the night. Long day at work so came home, downloaded it and got ready for another enjoyable JP movie, well that's how I remember it.

Unfortunately unlike the first one, it really hasn't aged well. The action is slight and obvious, the pace is slow and ponderous and it just doesn't have the excitement of the first instalment. Both my kids (8 and 6) were bored as I was I. Far too much forgettable dialogue with little new action that JP1, actually nowhere near as good. I remember this being okay when I watched it back in the day but it's actually pretty poor.

Surprisingly from SS who has made so many good movies, it really did feel like a straight to TV sequel 20 years on.

Give it a miss.

Stranger Things
(2016)

Season 1,2 and 3 are brilliant!
So I grew up in the 90's with transformers, robocop, Star Wars, Goonies, Back to the Future etc.

There as something special about that time and Stranger Things have captured it.

I am late to the party starting watching it in 2020 but boy I was I for a ride.

The characters are great, the storey is fab and all 3 seasons are great. I see lots of negative season 3 reviews but I thought S3 was almost as good as the first two.

Best thing I've seen on TV for a very long time.

If you like labyrinth, ET, poltergeist etc you're going to love this!

Commando
(1985)

Left anything for us John? just bodies!!
This film is incredible!

A Dictator kidnaps Commandos daughter (Jenny) as insurance. Arnold has to kill the leader of a Country or Jenny gets it.

Following, right? WRONG!!

The bad guys load Arnold onto a plane flying to the County where he must assassinate their leader. He has 12 hours before it lands. He boards, the doors shut and that's when the magic begins!!

Jumping out for flying planes, throwing telephone boxes over his shoulders, swinging 50ft across a shopping mall, car chases, punch ups, blowing multiple buildings up, fighting a whole army including killing people with garden tools all while delivering classic one liners!!

This movie doesn't have a hidden agenda, it won't teach you anything BUT I frigging love it!!!

Being back the 80's and Arnie, we need you!!!

The Lion King
(2019)

Why change it?!!
The visual effects are fantastic, probably the best I've seen but what have they done.

Why change classic songs? Why not have the original cast? Ok I get some are no longer with us but many still are. Some of the voices don't work and are annoying!

It looks great but feels shallow. Dialogue has been changed when it didn't need to be.

I did enjoy it but won't we watching it again unlike the 1994 version.

Disney - stop it now, just stop it.

The Greatest Showman
(2017)

Surprised to say the least!! This is an enjoyable movie with catchy songs!!
I hate musical movies, simple as that. If you want to see a musical go to the theatre, that's where it belongs.

So my kids were going on about wanting to see it until my ears were literally chewed off. So it's Saturday 4pm with nothing going on so I gave in. I was prepared for 2 hours of guff but I was wrong. It's not my cup of tea but there is no disputing the fact this is a very enjoyable film with really great songs, dancing and entertainment. Hugh Jackman is brilliant, very surprised how good he is. It's not a movie I will watch lots or even more than a few times but you can't deny, it will have you humming the songs well after the film has finished.

Enemy Mine
(1985)

A classic from my childhood
I watched this when it came out and I was something like 6/7. My dad always hires B movies from the local video shop in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex. So where great like The Thing, Big Trouble I'm little China and They Live and some were not so good.

When I saw this film I was hoping for a Star Wars/ Star Trek not but it didn't quite go like that. It was a bit weird with not much action and more or a sympathetic plot. All I remember is I quite liked it.

Fast forward to 2020. It was on Sky so I decided to watch it. Ok, it's a B movie with budget SPX. The pace of the film is ok but some of it is just right 80s. Although it was bourne of the Star Wars era it's not of a emotional story. Not a great deal of action and slow and sloppy in places but Something makes me like it. It's weird as if I watched it today I would hate it but it's so 80s it's almost great.

As I've said the SPX are poor for its age, the story is ok but nothing we haven't seen before and the conclusion is as you would expect. It's worth a visit because the acting is good and it's an 80s B movie.

Judge Dredd
(1995)

Stallone 90's cheese - run of the mill
First off the start of this film promises much. I like the way it is films and the story behind it. About 10 mins ago in Stallone shows up and all the silly cheese starts. It is non offensive but is way over the top as you would expect.

The SFX are actually still ok (2020) although some of the flying bike scenes are early CGI and are rough.

The film is cheese and you don't have to have 2 brain cells to work out what is going on. It's a standard Stallone 90s flick although not one of his best. It's a bit like the 6th day and Demolition man rolled into 1 but not as good as either.

Rob Schneider is just annoying. 20% of what he brings to the table would have worked but he is way over the top and the bumbling sidekick!

All in all, stick it in if you want some carefree action.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
(2019)

A fun action film
The first JW was really good, lots of action and a good story.

JW 2 was a bit of cheesy Hollywood remake which was ok but a little silly.

So JW3 wasn't a movie I was desperate to see.i watched it tonight and thought it was actually pretty good. It's a bit like Commando or Cobra from the 80's where there are a ton of bad guys all getting demolished. The action is way over the top but actually quite good. It also gives it a charm which you don't get these days.

The story os solid but goes on far too long for me.

The fight scenes are generally good and the pace of the film is solid but it goes a little too far at the end.

Fun action film.
