Pankh
(2010)

A story tormented between art and commercial cinema!!
Writer director Chattopadhyay made an earlier attempt writing a subtle story in 'Dus Kahaniya - Rice plate'. This time he made a bold attempt in touching the darker side of glamorous cinema.

Story goes something like this, a young boy, Jerry (Johnny Bakshi) forced by his mother (Lillete Dubey) to dresses and act in movie as a girl child, Baby Kusum. Jerry grows up to become confused, schizophrenic, drug addict, etc. This movie is an attempt to depict agony of this boy through possibly a true story of baby Kusum.

Solid plot, strong characters and above average acting from leads are plus points. On the other side, over-abstract scenes, unnecessary use of bad language and glamor could have been surely avoided. At times, dialogs sounds are so vulgar instead of feeling pity for the boy, felt like laughing at the writer for adding abusive slangs in the movie just for hack of it. Lillete Dubey is the most convincing character here, she played the bad mother to perfection. Bipasa Basu played Jerry's hallucination and she is definitely not cut out for this kind of roles.

Take away –A wasted opportunity to make a big impact

Raavan
(2010)

a sad sad Raavan from a bad bad movie
Mr. MR after 'Dil se' you never took SRK in your movies saying he spoiled the movie with his overacting. Now, what will you say about Abhishek Bacchan, who hammed his way to the glory in Raavan. Aishwarya Rai does nothing much than screaming and looking good. Special mention for her dresses for staying speckles in muddy background. And Maryada Purushottam Ram from the epic was depicted nothing more than a goon hunting shrewd cop. You gave us man-boobed, beer-bellied Govinda for Hanuman for jumping trees. Come on show some respect to your audience.

Overall dialogs and delivery is so bad, I felt all dialogs were in Tamil, they just dubbed it in Hindi. Surely Madras Talking paid handsome amount to critics for writing good reviews.

Only saving grace of the movie is Santosh Sivan's cinematography (which is more like Theeviravaathi, The Terrorist and Before the Rains) and Rehman's music. Though this is no where their best.

Take away - waste of time, waste of money

Raajneeti
(2010)

Things happen when trying to re-invent classics
Jha took 5 long years to make this movie. I am sure, during that time, he must have watched both Mahabharata and Godfather many many times. And it is apparent from this movie. Let me give a categorical review of few aspects

Storyline - This Raajneeti pizza had Mahabharata for base, Godfather for toppings and UP, MP's political scenarios for condiments. Good job, not the best though.

Cast - When you take intense actors like Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai; they push your cart, you don't have to do much and they justified well-shed money on them. Katrina and Arjun Rampal were refreshing, but Ranbeer took the cake with best role of Samar Pratap (Arjun from Mahabharata and Michael from Godfather).

Script - Rating first and second half separately, 8 for fast paced story development till interval. All the best dialogs and scenes are in first half only. 3 for boring and predictable second half. Almost all of the scenes post-interval are dragged.

Script - Delivered both best and worst in the same movie. Thumb up for Nana Patekar's party candidate nomination scene in slum. Even after ignoring many technical flaws in many parts; a total boo for Kunti-Karan meeting scene from Mahabharata, where Jha completely forgot to re-write it and just copy pasted whole scene including dialogs.

Editing - This could have been a nice power packed 2 hour movie, no idea why dragged to 3 hours.

Take away - In case you decide to leave in interval, you won't miss a thing!

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
(2010)

Not just another video game movie....
Well, few of the hyped video game movies released in last couple of years, Max Payne (which actually induced maximum pain to sit through whole movie), over hyped under delivered Residence Evil-Degeneration and passable Tekken. Of this genre, Prince of Persia is the best I have seen in recent past.

This movie is everything which its promise to be - entertaining, enthralling and remind you the video game. Bonus, it has a story as well, which I was not expecting at all. If you'd have played the game, you know it's more of a jumping, acrobatic prince you're handling than sword and hand-bomb actions. Movie gives you the same dusty game like feeling, remember you have to make prince jump from pole to pole, roof to roof in the game; you'll find a lot of that in this movie.

On critical side, movie has underplayed bond girl Gemma. Her role could have been more glamorous as Princess Tamina.

Take away - refreshing and entertaining

Ore Kadal
(2007)

Bold and meaningful cinema
Well, to be honest, I didn't have much hope when i went to watch this movie. I was expecting it to be a typical Mammoothy movie with typical masala story, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Story and casting is iconoclastic and questioning to the society. Story goes somewhat like this, a small family of husband, wife and a kid joins neighborhood of an illustrious and womanizer professor Dr. Nathan (Mammoothy). Housewife Deepti (Meera Jasmin) comes across professor and end up sleeping with him. Husband's failure at job and raising good family adds oil to the fire. By the time Deepti realize what is happening in her life, she became pregnant. Disturbed by professor's carelessness and rejection, Deepti loses her mental stability and admitted to asylum for treatment. Meanwhile, family leaves locality without informing anyone and cured Deepti joined back husband and son with a newborn baby. Professor starts feeling guilty for what he does to her and trying to find her. Finally professor finds Deepti in a new color and express his love for her and she accepts it. This movie couldn't have been ended on a better note.

There are mainly two pillars of this movie, Professor Nathan and housewife Deepti. And both of them have played their parts to perfection. I specially liked the part where professor tell her that he is a womanizer and whether it's you or anyone else doesn't matter to him. Expression on her face is nothing what you might have expected from a young actress like her. Many of the dialogs between professor and Deepti are monologues from professor with camera focused on Deepti's face. Beautiful direction.

Take away - a superb art piece is for non-mainstream movie only

7/G Rainbow Colony
(2004)

A well crafted intense love story
Story is fairly simple, there is a local rowdy good for nothing boy, fell in love with a cultured girl. Somehow, that girl also started liking the guy, and gave him a direction in life. And there are complications as this boy is not earning, girl is engaged, parents are against their love, etc. This movie reminded me 'Ek duje ke liye', which is more or less on the same lines.

What really pulled of this movie out of 100 similar movie is script and performance. Overall narration of the movie is top notch, there are a few well crafted incidences which takes the cake. Ravi Krishna (Kadhir) and Sonia (Anitha) have given a solid performance. Full marks to Ravi Krishna, I was convince to some extend this guy must be a roadside goon only in his real life as well.

There are some flaws in technicality and originality of the script, but perfect characterization overshadow it completely. Selvaraghavan built the characters so well in the first half that in second half, you might laugh and cry together with them. In fact, I had goose bumps in last hospital scene, although I watched it with English subtitles.

This is one of the movie which grows upon you, and before you know it you're in it. Take away - must watch

Andaz Apna Apna
(1994)

Career best from Santoshi
If anyone says this movie is funny, that would be an understatement for sure. This one is Hilarious, a laughter riot!! It has potential to bring your mood from sad to stomach aching funny...

I saw this movie in every mood and end result was same, was fresh and happy by the time I completed the movie. And I watched it for more than 50 times. Each and every character in the movie has a cult following in itself... Amar n Prem's AAILA UIMA.. crime master Gogo.. Ram Gopal Babaj n Shyam Gopal Bajaj (aka Teja)'s double role... super-smart Bhalla n Robert... half-brain blonds Ravina n Karishma... just to name a few..

Not only characters, movie has unforgettable dialogs and scenes... one of the intelligent joke.. remember the coin flipping sequence... Anand Akela asks "tum logo ne sholay dekhi hai??" Prem replies "haan haan, dus baar".. Amar snaps "Iske baap ne likhi hai".. as Sholay was written by Salim Khan (Salman's father in real life) and Javed Akhtar... quite intelligent..

from 1994 (release date) to 2010, I'm yet to meet a person who didn't like this movie, but alas this movie was not even a hit during that time..

There were many movies came before and after AAA, but none come even close to it in craziness factor... hats off AAA

The Japanese Wife
(2010)

simple flavour of romance
Aparna Sen did it again or to be precise even better than before. What all ingredients you want in a romantic movie, probably you won't find them in The Japanese Wife. But more importantly they have a story to tell and they told it very subtly.

Snehamoy (Rahul Bose) a school teacher in an Indian village fell in love Miyage (Chigusa Takaku) through the medium of letters; and so does Miyage. That love turns to marriage and hence starts their married life without seeing each other in person. There are many movies with similar theme, but most of them ends here. That's the different, this movie starts with their marriage. It was refreshing to see how they carry forward their marriage on letters. There are only letters for first half and hour or so. There are lovely little village incidents (kite flying, etc.) all through the movie. And ended on a perfect note.

Full marks to Rahul Bose for getting in Snehamoy's skin. Convincing performance from rest of the cast. The best part about the movie is quite vivid and imaginative use of props, background and music.

Though I am not a big fan of romantic movies. I enjoyed the movie to the core with my limited Bengali. Try and get a copy with English subtitle if possible.

Take away - watch it till the end, u'll be reward.

Kites
(2010)

Kites tried hard to fly with banality!!!
A bit of miss from Roshans this time. I tried my best to believe Jay(Hritik Roshan) is die-hard love with Natasha (Barbara Mori) for which he turned against whole world. But alas, there is no iota of passion I could find in their on-screen chemistry. Although, both Hritik and Barbara looks good individually.Bob (Kabir Bedi) gives warning to Jay on the first meeting that he can't see his daughter Gina (Kangana Raut) unhappy. And vanishes from the screen in whole of second half when Hritik run away with Natasha. Gina's hot tempered brother and Natasha's fiancé, Tony (Nicolos Brown)tried to speak awkward Hindi, don't know why.

Talking about story line, its totally beaten track. You might have seen the same story in hundreds of bollywood flicks if not thousands. For camera work, Mexican desert is anyway picturesque, a novice photographer with a good camera in hand can also give an awesome view of that region. Hritik, Barbara Mori, Kangana Raut are few of the most good-looking people in world, you make them look good on screen. Come on, I won't give you points for that. In terms of editing the train sequence, when Jay found unconscious in a goods train compartment was repeated at least thrice. Direction and script are confused, whole movie goes on two track before and after Jay was shot. And transition to and from flash back is poor.

Although acting wise there was not much of an expectation, the cast failed in meeting that as well. Except first few minutes of Hritik's dance, it was an ultimate torture to sit through 2 hours to watch an undeveloped love story of under developed characters.

Take away - Not worth an effort to go and watch in theater
