Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver
(2024)

A generic spoiler review of Star Wars: Daario Naharises part 2
It's a two hour movie. The first hour is just dumb slow motion stuff including crop harvesting, and head scratching exposition dumps.

The second hour is non stop action, some of which I actually enjoyed. It is visually better than the first movie. Don't get ahead yourself. Only by a margin.

Story wise it's mostly just nonsense or something you have seen before, many times.

Acting, meh. You know it's meh when the lead characters are bland compared to a CGI Robot voiced by Anthony Hopkins. Honsou was decent though. He always is. Ed Skerin tried. But he just doesn't come across as menacing.

Let's just say part 1 and part 2 are 2 movies meant to be seen together as 1. So, you basically kill of the main baddie midway through and then he is resurrected in Jesus wearing a toga pose (literally) shortly, only for him to die again towards the end. Such a lazy cop out. He was decapitated so I doubt he would be back.

Anywho, there is a twist towards the end but any person who has watched a movie or two has figured it out wayy before anyway.

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire
(2023)

It is one of the movies of all time
Critics panned the movie couple of days ago after the limited theatrical release. But then I also saw Zack saying that the R Rated Cut (duh) is a whole other movie. So that added some confusion and a hidden dread. But I watched it anyway, because why not. Action, Sci Fi, Space..I am in.

Giant spaceships, ominous shadows, a young hero, a grizzled warrior, excessive use of slo mo. Trademarks of a Snyder film. But, it felt empty and the story segments felt disjointed. The characters are not believable.

Star Wars, Harry Potter (Hippogriff), Doctor Who (Rachnoss), Seven Samurai, Wild Wild West and Spaghetti Westerns. Put those in a blender, take out character development/emotions and you get Rebel Moon. Interesting idea, horrific execution.

6/10 for the hype. Definitely one of the movies of all time. Have a day.

King David
(1985)

Why are the Philistines speaking Hindi though ?
I mean, I can get past all the inaccuracies because well, it's bibiblical and old, but, when David enters the Philistine castle in disguise, workers and masters are speaking Hindi. Like, really ? What the heck man.

Arrow: Elseworlds, Part 2
(2018)
Episode 9, Season 7

Name drops and fan service, not much of a plot..
There are so many characters come together but they don't have much of a purpose it seems, yet. This episode was all about fan service and name drops. I guess DC being unsuccessful in the big screens, they are trying to appease the TV fans.

6 stars for the Batman name drops only. If they are trying to show us that they are developing a Bat Universe, well, it was a good attempt.

Best part on the episode ? Seeing Marc Guggenheim having his own cell inside Arkham Asylum. Weakest crossover episode ever.

Midnight, Texas
(2017)

It's a fun show, but why it's giving me a headache ?
Well, there is no such thing called character development on this show. You know what it feels like when you watch it ? A bunch of young people are plucked from first year of theater school and told, 'here's a southern town set, you're a medium, you're a vampire, you're an assassin..you're a cute girl..you're a hot guy..aaand..action !'

Nothing has been explored well so far. Intentions, backstories, relationships. The acting is so bad, you will end up wondering..why are they a couple again ?.. or, why is she fighting him ? Stuff like that.

I'm watching it because it's fun seeing a bunch of Supernatural beings and tolerant humans form a merry band and coexist (?!). Season 1 was a mess. I thought it would improve in season 2. It did not.

So, if you are looking for something with story and heart, move along. If you have lots of time on your hands and want to fill your supernatural quota of the day with PG13 innuendo, by all means. That's what I'm doing.

XXX: Uncensored
(2018)

Breaking free with the streaming service
India had the chance to break free from normal censor board shenanigans with the new ever emerging streaming service, and they did. But as usual, apart from producing a masterpiece like Sacred Games or something even remotely close, they went with B grade softcore.

Each episode is like 25ish minutes, with one simulated sex scene ..taking upto 5-8 mins, rest just gobbledygook. It's like those dumb Masti movies with slightly more skin display. Well, shows like these are nothing new. Reminds me of Submission 2016 (Yikes!). XXX Uncensored isn't even an erotica. Erotica is an art. This is just random sex scenes surrounded by useless blabbering.

Avoid. This is a low blow from the AltBalaji streaming service.

Chef
(2017)

I am not gonna get back those 2 hours of my life, am I ?
When I saw Airlift, I saw brilliance in Raja Menon. He took a true story, added some fiction, and heart, and made the movie great. Then he got his hands on an already great screenplay of Jon Favreau, and instead of adding heart to it, he did a complete bypass surgery.

The movie was so sluggish, almost fell asleep in the middle. Songs made the movie unnecessarily lengthy. When yous see Jon Favreau as a Chef, you get the feeling of a burning premise about the love for cooking and food, and family as the accelerant. When Saif cooks, he looks like me when I'm attempting to make a decent omelette. At some point of the movie, you are actually going to forget what the movie is about. It's like Saif was forced to do the film. He had no chemistry with the cast whatsoever specially with his boy, except for with Chandan.

After seeing the real Chef, you will feel a refreshing passion about being a Chef, reconciliation premise and family bond. And the remake will come to one conclusion, Saif needs an anger management class.

5/10 for the quirky sidekick and the amusing bus driver.

Wonder Woman
(2017)

Very linear, DC got it right, a female strong hero on the spotlight, she's Wonder Woman
Reading the reviews here. Either they are bowing down to the movie or just hating blindly. Not sure how many have actually seen it. Very good movie after all the disappointment from the past DCEU movies.

Seeing all the trailers and featurettes, very little was left for imagination, but those didn't disappoint. The movie is about the journey of a demigod from Themyscira, where it's all bright and shiny to the real world, which is torn by war, greed, hatred and darkness. Diana walks in as the light.

Getting her influence from Donner, Patty Jenkins got it right. What it means to be a hero, what does it mean to inspire..and the quest for the Amazon beauty to become the light in the darkness. Strength, sorrow, motivation, humanity, hope and loss forges the path to be the ultimate hero she's meant to be.

Gal Gadot surprised me. Most of her past performances were, well, sub par. Finally she's in the spotlight. She did pretty well. Although she has a long way to go, everyone begins somewhere. This movie is for her. Kudos for her strong performance, specially the fight sequences.

We all deserved this movie. While not a masterpiece, but good enough to be the stepping stone for women empowerment, and a proper story for a demigod and one of the most popular female superhero who can go toe to toe with the all powerful Superman. I just can't wait to see her interactions and chemistry with the big blue, and how they co ordinate, being the two gods that they are. DCEU is back on track.

Apart from her, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor shined, and he is straight from the comic book pages. He's a good actor, not surprising.

Despite all the positives, it has it's flaws. Some scenes were too long and unnecessarily dragged. Diana's chemistry with Steve could have been better. Dr Poison was equivalent to Kaecilius' henchmen..wasted.

A good ending satisfies all, after the emotional turbulence audiences go through. This movie did justice to that.

That being said, Man of Steel still remains the favorite DCEU movie for me. But perhaps that's because I'm biased to Supes.

7/10.

Sandy Wexler
(2017)

What the hell was that ?
I very well know the recent quality of the movies Sandler has done over the past couple of years, so wasn't very hopeful for this one either. Then I read the plot, it's about a goofy but lovable Hollywood manager. So I decided to give it a shot, thinking, well, this might actually be good and didn't watch the trailer or any featurette. I knew something from them would not let me watch the movie. The metascore was surprisingly over 40, which boosted my confidence.

Boy, was I wrong.

This could have been a decent movie with a decent storyline, a reminiscent of "The Bodyguard". But no, bad writing, and the "Sandler Gang" members, Kevin James, Nick Swardson etc had to screw them up with silly stuff, like breaking through things, set on fire and what not. Of course, why did Sandler have to change his voice like he did on "Little Nicky" ? For real ? Not everyone can be Jim Carrey. Well, the Billy Madison productions have ran out of Jokes in the late 90s. I think Peter Segal could have done a lot better job with a similar script, providing a solid comedy.

This was nothing but a parody of Sandler's old movies. Avoid.

Arrow: Who Are You?
(2017)
Episode 10, Season 5

And we are back to The Felicity Show after the break
Here I thought we were getting a better season 5 after last season's disaster, mostly flim-flam plots and Felicity's unexplained nuke hacking skills. This season had few glimpses of hope, with the new team, more punches from Oliver and less soap-opera. All that came to a ground zero on this latest episode. Felicity is back with being the Batman-like boss, undermines Oliver at every step and turns out to be the wiser one, yet again. They teased Laurel before the break for this drivel ? I hope we get to see to why Earth-2 Laurel had turned into what she is now, but we won't..as more sub-plots entering into the limelight. Like that grand entry of Talia, a search for a yet another Canary, who apparently can scream too. She just appeared out of thin air with that particular ability just because the plot needed her to be. Arrow is always about the iconic duo, Green Arrow and Black Canary. I just hope the writers aren't going to force that with the new girl. Then again, there is so much you can do with the really bad acting overlord, Mr. Horrific and Why Dog. Positive sides of the episode ? Seeing the district attorney being useful and badass and another famous DC girl, Talia's involvement in the flashbacks, as boring and repetitive they are.

Doctor Strange
(2016)

Visually stunning, witty and suffers from MCU villain deficiency syndrome
First off, I was blown away by the visuals, and the way cross dimensional scenarios were portrayed as if a comic book page came to life. Haven't read much of Doctor Strange comics, although one of my favorite Marvel characters. Being a DC fan, and so far a disappointing DCEU, went in with high expectations to fill my Superhero treat quota of the year. Was not disappointed.

Now comes the story, it's your typical Marvel character introduction movie. Pretty much explained in the trailers, after surviving a near fatal car accident, he eventually goes to Kamar Taj for healing, thus begins his journey as the Sorcerer Supreme. Benedict Cumberbatch did the character Doctor Strange justice.

I think Scott Derrickson did a fine job directing this multi- dimensional CGI fest superhero movie, as the plot served it's purpose quite well.

Now for the negative roles, Kaecilius..once a pupil of the Sorcerer Supreme, the Ancient one, lost his way and turned to darkness, similar to the likes of Mordo in the comics. Not much had been shown to why he did so. He isn't that scary, and they mention his atrocities several times, we don't see them actually. But Mads was fine as he was, could have been much deeper and better. But that seems to be a common issue in the MCU. Not much depth added to villains to make them less scary ..to make them watchable to everyone. The henchmen of Kaecilius were just wasted imo.

Quite a witty movie, and there are laughter in very serious moments. I loved Benedict Wong and his comic timings.

Rachel McAdams was okay, but she doesn't get much screen time.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, or Mordo, again, lacks the depth.. which he apparently needed a lot. He is a real talented actor, and a very important character in the Strange mythos, so the writers could have done a lot better.

Music and the score were good, not the best in the MCU, but syncs quite well with scenes.

So the best part of the movie was Benedict and his portrayal of Doctor Strange, a simple plot and the extra stunning visuals. That's pretty much it. Overall, a decent movie. I just hoped the villains wouldn't be a let down like some of the past Marvel movies, sadly they were.

There are two post credit scenes, both are quite important. One at the end of Major credits, another at the very end. Don't miss those ! Enjoy ..a must watch in IMAX 3D.

The Sea of Trees
(2015)

All aboard the guilt train
Almost fell asleep during the movie, it's so slow. Had high expectations, as the movie is about the all mythical..majestic Aokigahara, and a guilt trip taken there by a grieving Spouse which is directed by Gus Van Sant. Didn't live up to it, at least for me.

Although, both Matthew McConuaghey and Ken Watanabe were both quite well in their roles, Naomi Watts was okay too. It falls apart in pacing and editing mostly.

Basically the plot is about a married couple who has their ups and downs in their marriage, and suddenly the wife gets terminally ill. Struck with grief, the husband finds a perfect place to die, which is the "Sea of Trees" or Aokigaraha forest. While in there, he finds another grieving and lost fellow, and befriends him..who eventually shows the husband, the light. In those moments while the both guys travel through the forest and look for a way out, the husband deals with his grief, and lots of guilt from his life and marriage, and finds solace in the company of his fellow lost man.

It was pretty darn slow, but the cinematography was good. Some nice and beautiful camera-work and shots. Music was okay. Could get an Oscar nomination or two, particularly in the Cinematography section. Acting wise, Matthew was nowhere near his best, from the likes of Mud or Dallas Buyers Club. I think he had a better performance in Interstellar. Nonetheless, wasn't bad either. He has the exact same crying scene from Interstellar in this movie at one point.

Some might like it, some might not. I found it okay-ish. Not the best from Gus Van Sant, as I think, this movie didn't do justice to the majestic forest we know as Aokigahara, and it's story as the "Suicide Forest". See it and decide for yourselves.

Blood Father
(2016)

Pretty straightforward movie, not that great, not bad either
Pretty simple movie, and a straightforward plot. The film starts with Erin, the daughter, shown pretty much screwed up and she gets herself intertwined with some nasty people, which eventually puts her life in danger. Then we see her father, Mel Gibson, a recovering ex-con and addict, living a wayward and isolated life in the middle of nowhere. So anyway, the troubled daughter shows up, and what wouldn't a father do to help a daughter out, specially when he has not seen her for a long time, and he is a pro in badarsery. Lots of F words, random shootings and deaths, and then the end. Pretty much forgettable movie, but okay for one time watch. Erin was fine as the screwed up daughter. Rated 6/10 just because I love Mel, and seen him after quite a while. Was a treat to see him in action after Lethal Weapon and Get the Gringo.

Don't expect anything epic, or even like Taken. Just your out of the box father-daughter action movie.

Deadpool
(2016)

It's all about the dialog
After a long time, truly did laugh my arse off in a theater. Trust me, I prefer superhero movies with a nice story/twist, and dark, gritty. This was truly an exception. Moreover, it's rated R for all the good reasons !

Ryan Reynolds was epic in his role of Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool. Morena Baccarin plays his ravish girlfriend, Vanessa. TJ Miller is there for some comic relief. But..it's all about Deadpool. It's all him. Not the villains, not the guest stars, it's all him and his crude, vulgar yet, hilarious humor. The timings are impeccable.

Villains and Guest stars, Gina Carano AKA Angel was pretty cool and sexy. Stefan Kapicic AKA Colossus was there for some impressive CGI showdown, and comic relief. Brianna Hildebrand AKA Negasonic Teenage Warhead, solely picked because of the name, was impressive. Specially her powers. The best guest star was not there in body, you'll find out.

Overall, if you want great laughter, enjoy epic fights and a simple story, Deadpool is the movie. Marvel keeps on impressing us.

Supergirl
(2015)

Same mistakes as Smallville did..and dreadful CGI/Science
Okay, where to start. This is 2016, era of the comics movies and TV shows. Movies like Man of Steel, The Avengers have set the bar pretty high for the quality of the TV shows that are following them. In accordance to that, and the DC shows which are running right now, Supergirl has the weakest story line, CGI and not to mention, science of it.

Well, science is a tricky part when you're dealing with a being of god-like powers. Still, in The Flash, when he runs at Supersonic speeds, he usually breaks glasses around him (Later the Speed Force keeps him from destroying stuff around him while running fast). Yet in the Supergirl promo/trailer, we see her creating a sonic boom while flying away in front of Catco..leaving the glass buildings around her intact. Anyway, it's not so important for everyone. Then there is the scenario where two super-powered beings are fighting. It's like watching Rousey and Holm fight. In MoS, when Supes and Zod were at it, super-powered beings as they are..created shock-waves with each punch they were throwing at one another, trail of destruction piled up as a consequence of the fight. Yet in the show, we see multiple super beings fight with little to no redress around structures to follow. Watching two powerful beings fight should be a feast for the eyes in this era with the CGI effects and all, but sigh. It's like watching Smallville all over again.

Talking about Smallville, Kryptonite was basically sold at random shops for free almost and government had infinite access to them, even though it's supposed to be a super rare element. Glimpse of the same domain can be seen in this show.

Although started off too cheesy, it did get a bit better with the story later on adding a low point..too much spices were added in a simple soup dish. I am still hopeful for this show, given that writing several stories and scripts about an overpowered being can be difficult.
