Beyond the Call of Duty
(1992)

Why even bother to watch?
Waste of time; as a vet of the earlier era, before Nixon's war, I'm insulted (Nixon's war started in 1968 when, to win the election, he went behind Johnson's back and told Diem not to attend peace talks because he'd get a better deal from Nixon as president. I hold Nixon responsible for the more than 5K additional deaths of my fellow Americans. Nixon was not only a crook, he was a traitor); no professional acting with Vincent & McWhirter the worst; gun boat never even planed; action scenes are enemy soldiers drop like flies and Americans, especially, Vincent, standing in the open never hit, but the nun shot in the back inside the cabin; a pleasure cruise to the orphans who weren't always below deck and always disembarked to play on the shore whenever the boat stopped - it's not like they would have to make a quick get-a-way in a war zone; an extremely poorly done, obviously untrue event; wasted watch, W-0.

Hunting Ava Bravo
(2022)

Glad I Watched
Infuriating that Ava didn't shoot Buddy King in the first scene, then three others would be alive. But, even boys who think they are experienced men pick up a gun and can't pull the trigger either. The depth and personality development was so far beyond the comprehension of the negative reviewers, it is not a wonder they didn't enjoy it. Also, some might be of the far too prevalent insecure, cowardly type that simply can't handle a woman being as much a man as they, just happens to be the female of the species. If all one watches are CGI blow up action movies that defy the laws of physics and reality, the brain never develops, especially in empathy and understanding, let alone physics.

At times, I found myself hollering at Ava, calling her dumb, like when she didn't kill him and took only one of her captor's gloves; also, her walking with her finger on the trigger. It was amazing she wasted only one bullet or later didn't shoot Buddy accidentally. His not grabbing the rifle when she was nearly poking him in the nose with it may have been because his actions were calculated and he wanted to wear her down and get more into her head, "the full story." And Buddy, of course, always with his smile of hubris.

His line about them being the same is straight from the coward creed to pull her down to his level, playing the CYA game. Ava was a loner and sad for not having prevented the demise of a seventeen year old the first time she was aggravatedly assaulted; whereas, Buddy was lonely and sad from watching his dad get shot by the police when Buddy did not acknowledge him as his dad. However, Buddy doesn't own his actions; he cowardly blames others.

Although I don't usually read reviews before watching, for Hunting Ava Bravo, I did. Glad I did or I wouldn't have felt compelled to write a review.

For me the film was sufficiently intriguing, attention holding, and entertaining that I never experienced the complaints of many reviewers.

Additionally, Ava's self-talk was fantastic and does work like a charm in the human mind.

This movie was an 8-10, well worth the watch, and could be watched again.

Spinning Man
(2018)

Whew! That was close.
So glad to have picked this over another martial arts.

Very interesting philosophical story following a philandering Philosophy of Linguistics Professor, raising my ire against the police tactics, but the circumstantial evidence keeps building, coupled with his confused flashbacks searching for the truth, that the professor partially covers in his mind as he is guilty of cheating on his wife with types like the missing woman. The ending is least understood by critics as the professor, after a rendezvous with Anna in which she is injured, immediately following his alcohol binge as his wife Ellen left him at the side of the road, goes to the Inspector out of guilt and confesses to involvement with the missing girl and that he might have killed her. And yet he is told the Autopsy proves he did not. Finally, getting home, he is relieved and wants to return to things as they were, promising Ellen he won't lie, but leaving me worried about Ellen and the kids. Dr. Evan Birch is not cured; that was just a close call. The Philosophy of Linguistics Professor is still on the philandering prowl.

Cops and Robbers
(2017)

Not M. Jai W. as expected, but pleasantly surprised.
This was a cool well done movie with quite an ending twist. Worth a 2nd watch. Direction, acting, plot were quite good. Those who rated low wanted the fake kicks to the head from White, and missed the entire point of the plot. Both White & Jackson's characters were acting to convince cops and the public that it was a real bank robbery and that the two of them hated each other. I was convinced. Actually stealing only the dirty money, letting the police recoup all the bank money, putting the corrupt cops in jail, occupying the police psychologist, and having the hostage crooked cop commit suicide was superbly done. By not showing the viewer the plans, the director and writer had me believing that the escape in the armored truck was real and the SWAT van was fake. And then one complainer, giving a low rating, criticized the fake actions of the two brothers pointing guns at each other in the nearly final scene within their childhood home. He analyzed as though it were real, which is excellent acting by White and Jackson because the cops were listening. Those negative critiques appear to be from those with a quite shallow depth of understanding. I found the film to be the opposite of boring with the totally surprising twists satisfactorily closing out a fine, entertaining film, without White performing any martial arts and putting in a fine performance. Well worth the watch.
