The Lost King
(2022)

Fascinating subject hobbled by clunky drama
Strangely bitter film despite the plot showing the heroine vindicated at every turn. Academics behave as rather over-the-top high school movie villains.

For a film that purports to critique the linking of physical disability with evil, it was a little disappointing that the king's "ghost" was depicted as so sanitized and athletic. I was expecting him to change to a more realistic depiction after the curved spine of skeleton was revealed (the only time Philippa's hunches are shown to be even slightly off!) but no such luck. It's also ironic that a film so critical of patriarchal institutions ends up vindicating a patriarchal institution, as the focus shifts from finding the truth to defending Richard's claim to the throne and getting a royal seal on his grave.
