Flip or Flop
(2013)

Formulaic flipping
A show where every flip is like the last. Buy a house well below market rate. Open up the kitchen. Renovate the bathrooms. Paint inside and out. Cover any existing fireplace with tile. Change the front door. Complain about every extra expense. Pay for staging. Sell for more than the local comps.

The program skips the most important steps. Like how they actually find the houses they flip at below market prices. No doubt they have numerous assistants running around looking for sellers that are desperate to do all cash deals. They also skip all the details relating to the actual building and permits.

To top it off they don't actually do any of the real work (at least not in the later series). Apparently they spend most of their time picking tile and cabinet door colors, applying makeup, and driving around in trophy cars. Thankfully the series appears to have now ended.

The Vast of Night
(2019)

A movie for pure sci-fi lovers
The Vast of Night is truly a film for classic sci-fi lovers. As many other reviewers here have expressed, this is clearly not the kind of movie that a general audience expecting lots of action, plot twists, and visual effects will like. However, like sci-fi movies of its genre, it has been written for audiences that are willing to invest in a story where they are already familiar with what to expect from the beginning.

The movie itself starts with very little setup since it is assumed that the audience will already be very familiar with the classic trope. That is, two naive adolescents thrown into awakening about a future that is broader than they were ready to accept. The dialog is at times fast. But attempting to follow it is more critical to enjoying it than in most movies. The film itself is largely a homage to many classic sci-fi movies. As such, it is unlikely to please anyone looking for flashy gadgets, strange fantastical worlds, or fast paced action. However, if you already know and love classic sci-fi, and are still willing to accept it for what it is, you will more than likely to enjoy this movie too.

In the Shadow of the Moon
(2019)

An OK movie.
A fairly solid scifi mystery movie. Better than you might expect based on the rating. Not very original considering that the 12 monkeys TV series did the idea to death. A bit too melodramatic for my taste.

Ignore the reviews that call it political. With current events people seem to think any story that involves race as a political commentary. At most this is social commentary that makes some people feel uncomfortable. For me, as long as it makes people actually think, that is a good thing.

Making a Murderer
(2015)

Mixed
An interesting documentary that paints a clear picture of wilful deception present within the justice system. The most painful part may be seeing that the judges at all levels had decided before any arguments are heard. This points to the real failure of most current justice systems where guilt is still ultimately decided based on personal feelings and biases rather than science or facts.

Season 2 nicely improves on season 1 by showing a good amount of actual evidence. What is presented strongly suggests that Steven Avery was framed. However, the case from Brandon remains unclear and shifting opinions are given by the defense lawyer based on convenience for her client. What is clear is that a confession was coerced from someone incapable of understanding the consequences. Having been in a similar situation as a minor I understand how important it was to be sufficiently cognizant. Unfortunately the series still seems to lack the investigation required to reveal what actually happened.

Salvation
(2017)

Predictable
This is show where the good guys are out to save the world from a future asteroid impact and the bad guys are trying to stop them. Specifically, they are try to stop an NEO (near earth object). I work closely with people that search for NEOs for a living. Searching for asteroids doesn't interest me that much (I'm not big on rock collecting). However, what they do for a living is still far more interesting than anything in this show.

Anyway, the biggest problem I have with the show is that everything is complete predictable. So much so that is almost unwatchable. Add to this that the characters are one dimensional and the science is fantasy.

One last thing. There is a group called ATLAS that searches NEOs. I guess the writers decided to rip that off.

The Curse of Oak Island
(2014)

Where every theory has a home.
If ever there was a place for crackpot theories this is it.

The most interesting thing about the show for me is the lengths to which people's imagination will stretch when they are presented which something they are unable to understand (even if others are). The persistence of the unanswered, in the face of repeated attempts to do so, gives you a sense of why people originally invented both religions and science. I'm glad that they have not tried to apply either here. A mystery is much more fun than an answer.

The show has actually improved over the years. There is less constant repetition of exactly the same lines. No doubt that is what most annoyed most people in the first couple of series.

Definitely one of my favorite shows.
