Eurovision Song Contest Rotterdam 2021
(2021)

An American's review of Eurovision 2021
This was the first year I watched Eurovision from start to finish because it was the first year it streamed live in the US (on Peacock). I must say that it was the most entertaining televised event I've ever watched.

I studied French as an academic minor and I loved how two of the entries were in French and how San Marino gave their results in French. However, I thought the two French-language entries were underwhelming, especially compared to the French-language Eurovision winner "Ne partez pas sans moi" by Céline Dion.

The Israeli entry for 2021 was good, but I prayed for the apartheid state of Israel not to win so I wouldn't have had to boycott Eurovision next year. My favorite entry that made it to the finals was the Cypriot entry, "El Diablo" by Elena Tsagrinou. The Croatian entry, "Tick-Tock" by Albina, should have made it to the finals.

It's very easy to see why Eurovision is so popular and why 183 million people watched it this year.

Entertaining and moving show with awful CGI
I couldn't get into this show until the second episode, and the CGI is awful. However, starting with the second episode, this show becomes quite gripping. There is a particularly horrific scene in which a child is killed in front of her mother. The actress who plays the mother of the child deserves an award for her amazing performance. Part of what makes this show riveting is that it's not afraid to put characters who are children in peril and the show makes you genuinely afraid that a child could be killed. Also, it's refreshing that the evil creatures are monsters for a change instead of zombies. However, I have to deduct a point for a boring first episode and another point for awful CGI.

A Discovery of Witches
(2018)

Doesn't get good until the Season 2 premiere
I decided to check this show out because it's on Shudder. It should be noted, however, that this show is fantasy, not horror. I never read any of the Twilight books or watched the movies, and this show has been called "Twilight for adults" and "Twilight for nerds". It's very slow and somewhat lacking in dramatic intensity. However, I still plan to watch the second season to see if it improves. The second season looks more interesting than the first one was because the second one takes place in Elizabethan England. If you want to watch a great show about witches that actually has horror content, watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina instead.

Update: the second season seems much more promising than the first because the setting has moved to Elizabethan England. The Season 2 premiere is reminiscent of Outlander. Due to this significant improvement, I am changing my rating from 5 out of 10 to 7 out of 10.

Happiest Season
(2020)

Sweet and hilarious
Wow! I didn't think I would love this film as much as I did. Not only is it sweet, but it's also hilarious, and it's never cheesy (unlike The Christmas House on Hallmark, for example). It brought a tear to my eye. Not only is this the most beautiful Christmas film I've ever seen, but it's my favorite film of the year so far.

Evil
(2019)

Too creepy for CBS?
(This review only refers to the first episode.) I was pleasantly surprised by how creepy the first episode was because I never thought such an eerie show would air on a network like CBS. This is the first show I have ever watched on CBS because their other shows don't appeal to me. (I watched a few episodes of The Good Wife but I don't think I watched the first episode.) The incubus in the first episode was very nightmarish. I'm hooked and I can't wait to continue watching this show. This is the best horror series to air on a broadcast (non-cable) television network in the United States since Hannibal.

Kingdom
(2019)

Thrilling and regally entertaining historical zombie series
This show combines Game of Thrones-esque political intrigue with The Walking Dead-esque zombie thrills, but it's better than both of those shows. Not only is it the best zombie series I've ever seen, but it's one of the best historical series I've seen as well.

The Order
(2019)

I wanted to love it, but I just couldn't get into it
I started watching this show because I am a horror fanatic, but this show is heavy on fantasy content and low on horror content. I love Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and I thought this show would be similar. The plot is convoluted and hard to follow. I was hoping that the introduction of demons in the second season would take this show more into horror territory. However, the demons are not frightening at all. I have two episodes left of the second season and I am forcing myself to watch them because I am a horror fanatic. If you prefer fantasy to horror, you might enjoy this show. However, if you prefer horror to fantasy, I would highly recommend watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina instead if you haven't watched that.

Killer Camp
(2019)

Greatest reality show of all time?
This is a reality show for people like me who hate reality TV. I find most reality TV dreadfully boring and fake, but this show was fantastic. It's a faux murder-mystery/whodunit game show. If you are a horror fanatic like me, you will probably love it. Now that this show is over I am having withdrawal because there was no other show like it on TV. More shows like this, please!

Aval
(2017)

Greatest Indian horror film I've ever seen
This film has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it is totally deserving of that score. This is the only Indian horror film I've seen that is actually terrifying. My only complaint is that there is a scene at the end of the film involving eyes with multiple irises that seems ripped off from The Exorcist TV series.

Ju-on: Origins
(2020)

I don't understand all the low ratings
I've seen four episodes so far. This is the first live-action Japanese series I've ever seen. I saw Takashi Shimizu's The Grudge, but I never saw any of the Japanese films or the other three American films. I don't find East Asian horror scary, but this show is both bizarre and very intriguing so far. If you're looking for scares, you will be disappointed, but if you are fascinated by the creepy, the eerie, and the macabre, you will enjoy this series.

The Other Lamb
(2019)

This is supposed to be a horror film?
I watched this film because I am a horror fanatic. If you suffer from insomnia, watch this film at night. I struggled to stay awake until one of the characters screamed and said something about one of the other characters being impure. I'm not sure how this qualifies as a horror film or even a thriller. One of this director's other films, In the Name Of, was much better. One star for the cinematography, one star for the performances, and one star for the ending.

Update: this was the worst film I saw in 2020.

Curon
(2020)

Criminally underrated
(I have only seen the first episode so far.) I don't understand how this show only has a 5.8 rating. I was very impressed with the first episode, which was far better than the first episode of that dreadfully boring German show Dark. The first episode had breathtaking scenery, and the show takes place in Curon Venosta, Italy, which is known as Graun im Vinschgau in German. I decided to start this show because I am a horror fanatic and because I have never seen an Italian horror show. South Tyrol used to be a part of Austria-Hungary until 1919, which is why the Krampus tradition is alive and well in that region. (There is a reference to Krampus in the first episode, and I hope there will be some exploration of the local folklore.) Most people in South Tyrol speak German, and I'm not sure if there will be some German dialogue later in the show, but if there isn't, that is a missed opportunity. I have never been to Italy, but now I want to visit this region. The first episode isn't scary, but it is definitely eerie, and I am intrigued to see what happens next. Also, if you don't speak Italian, and you don't have a phobia of subtitles, I recommend watching this show with subtitles instead of dubbed.

Élite
(2018)

Highly addictive, but Season 3 finale is disappointing
I don't speak Spanish, and I watched the first three seasons with subtitles. If you don't speak Spanish and don't have a phobia of subtitles, I would highly recommend watching it in Spanish with subtitles! Also, thanks to this show I discovered the great song "Forever" by Chvrches.

This incredibly addictive series is like a Spanish version of Riverdale, but far more daring and moving. I appreciate that this show has religious diversity, unlike Riverdale which barely brings up religion at all. Elite is also less family-friendly and is not suitable for younger audiences. The first three seasons have not one but two murder mysteries. I started the first season this year and I was hooked for 24 episodes. The only reason I can't give this show a perfect score is because I had mixed feelings about the Season 3 finale. Wouldn't a simple autopsy be able to determine if Polo's death was a homicide or suicide? Also, since Polo eventually became consumed with guilt and decided to turn himself in, it seems like Lu would eventually turn herself in after being consumed with guilt. Additionally, the Season 3 finale ties everything up so neatly that it makes you wonder what Season 4 could possibly be about. Overall, however, this highly watchable show is a fantastic way to spend your time.

Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made
(2018)

I had to turn the lights on
Coincidentally, once every nine years, I see a horror film that's so terrifying that I lose sleep over it. In 2002, it was The Ring. In 2011, it was Insidious. And in 2020, it was Antrum.

This is why I love horror. I have seen tons of horror films and TV shows, and I thought that no horror film or show could frighten me anymore until I saw this film. There are two scenes that are so terrifying that I had to turn the lights on. The first of these scenes was so scary that I almost stopped watching the film and then decided to watch that scene with the lights on. Kudos to the directors for managing to frighten this horror fanatic who thought nothing else could scare him. I'll be using a nightlight until I recover - if I do recover.
