Downton Abbey: A New Era
(2022)

Skip it
Sorry to say this movie was just an excuse to cash in more on the name and cache of Downton Abbey. There are 2 main stories lines: one that is just a red herring based idea that doesn't move anything forward in the world we've come to know and love. The other story also isn't much to move their world along either, but buys the Abbey a new roof and gives a reason for one character leave the Abbey (in the most unjustified way that the story did nothing to earn.... At least they will have fewer characters in a crowded field should this continue). It's also sad to me that they are squandering the opportunities that come with moving from episodic tv to theatrical release: the point should be broaden your story scope and to expand your audience. That won't happen here...if someone didn't watch the show, I don't think theyd have anything to latch onto here. Of course the end was moving... but that was based on what I knew from the show and not this paint by number execution. Watch it for free someday. While you are doing something else constructive.

The Book of Queer
(2022)

It's queer, it's comedy and its history.
That combo is bound to ruffle a few feathers (as evidenced by the only other posted review as of this moment), but as the intro to the show says "it's comedy" and all the facts are documented. Only the first episode is available as of this writing, and it's campy craziness (based in forgotten truths) is addicting. This is a show to watch at drag brunch. With your nieces and nephews. Bayard Rustin (a mostly neglected figure in the civil rights movement and who is about to get his due in an upcoming bio pic) has back up singers for gods sake. It's adorable and important information. This isn't your History Channel history.

Scarecrow and Mrs. King: Weekend
(1984)
Episode 20, Season 1

Wait...what?!?
This is a fine episode for the most part, but there's a horrible edit... it's like there is a missing scene. Amanda is taken hostage, unties herself and her fellow captive and puts things in motion to escape. The next time we see them, they are both inexplicably tied up and had apparently been captured again. Whoops!

Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector
(2020)

Big bummer
I've enjoyed many of the deaver novels, even with their cliches. Theres something about reading a book like that.... you can fill in the blanks in your own mind. The tempo is in good part what you make it. Adapting popular work is a constant temptation and sadly this is another example of not doing it well. The film the bone collector wasn't much to write home about but held out hope for the show. The show is sadly waaay worse. Rushed. Choppy. And now in the day of so many procedurals it's second rate formulaic.

February
(2015)

Another "what were they thinking " film
I really just want to know what they were thinking. When I board a movie, I'm along for the ride and assume it's going to take me somewhere. This movie goes nowhere and makes no sense as it plunders along aimlessly. The 2 stars are for the cast and the atmosphere but again: what were they thinking?

The Belko Experiment
(2016)

Gory twisted fun
How did I not even know about this movie? Stumbled on it and sooo glad I did. Gory yes. Some imperfections (I think you have to take a couple of big leaps in suspending disbelief) but soooo much fun. It's saw meets office space.

Shut In
(2016)

So bad
How do movies like this get made? So so bad. There's a potentially good plot twist here that just gets wasted in the inanity. Good actors but so many plot holes and stupidity in the characters. Ugh.

L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin
(2014)

Interesting people but no arc to film
A hodgepodge of observations and snippets of life with no arc. Very little is revealed as the film goes on. If you watch the first 15 minutes you pretty much have seen what the film has to offer: religion and homosexuality can butt up against each other sometimes. What a shock. The most interesting scene was the final one when a reformed lesbian/mother takes her gay son to church with her in hopes that he too will convert. She says that if she ever were gay again that she would pray god will kill her or she will Kill herself and I'm like omg, where is THIS going to go...end credits. Give the film a button kids. The difference between an ok documentary and a great one I think is that a great one has a "story" to tell: not just document stuff and let us fend for ourselves. Let's have a beginning, middle and an ending.
