Yeh Ballet
(2020)

Excellent. Must watch
Sooni Taraporewala is an amazing director. Her decades of working with Mira Nair has obviously paid off. A remarkable film. It was heart rending to watch Julian Sands in one of his last films.

Manish Chauhan is more than mere eye candy. He is an exquisite dancer.

Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar
(2022)

An amazing film
You find yourself allowing the film to engulf your senses. Very sparing use of music. Stunning acting and direction. You see Anurag Kashyap's essence run through the film. I could have savoured another hour of this film, luxuriating in it's ethereal undulations.

The King
(2019)

Perfect. Timothee Chalamet has matured into an excellent actor...
Perfect. Timothee Chalamet has matured into an excellent actor. He was the reason I decided to watch the film. Very well directed and excellent cinematography. Not an "Elizabeth" as the director lacks Shekhar Kapur's gravitas and of course Cate Blanchett has a leg up over Timothee. But it has been a whirlwind, keeping track of Timothee's exalted ride from one marvelous film to another.

J. Edgar
(2011)

A remarkable film. Clint Eastwood is a master director.
A remarkable film. Clint Eastwood is a master director. He knows how to tell a complex story very well.

Leonardo DiCaprio is an excellent actor. This young boy from "Titanic" has evolved into one of the most actors in Hollywood.

The story unfolds in a classic narrative, interleaved with flashbacks. A very sensitive film, that does not portray Hoover as the monster that most of the US perceived him to be.

There is one scene that stands out, where Edgar and Tolson wrestle and fight. Edgar has blood on his mouth. Then they kiss and part with the blood tinging their both lips, as bright red lipstick.

Kaagaz Ke Phool
(1959)

Skip it
I was seeing the film after 20, perhaps 30 years. Somehow I recollect it being a masterpiece. Today I found it terribly stilted, like a B grade production, replete with cliches of every kind. I just could not go on after 10 minutes into the film. It is sad, that I could not conjure up the determination to watch all of it.

Da 5 Bloods
(2020)

Do the right thing...do not watch this crap
Da 5 Bloods

It is bad. Really bad. I am seeing a Spike Lee movie after decades. It makes me wonder, has he lost his touch. Or was he always a mediocre director. Every scene seems so very contrived and uncomfortable. When he plays "Ride of the Valkyries" as the boat makes it way up the river, trying to parody the famous scene from "Apocalypse Now", it did not evoke sardonic humour, it just made us realise how very pathetic this movie was. What is most comical is the corny soundtrack. During each moment of drama, the corny John Wayne music comes on, destroying any poignancy of the scene. I would have given up an hour ago, but I plan to see it to the end, just on account of da bro Spike Lee. When the son finds the gold, when going for a dump with a spade! That's when I threw in the towel I was not ready to invest another 1 hour watching this school boy production. Whew! Bye Spike Lee.

Unorthodox
(2020)

An amazing serial
An amazing serial. It is not about a consent community. It is about a woman and her spirit. It is a very moving, extremely emotional journey for the characters and the audience. Amazing acting, direction, costumes and production. Watch it. Then watch it again.

Gran Torino
(2008)

One of the best films you could ever watch
One of the best films you could ever watch. Clint Eastwood has been with me all my life. Right from "Dirty Harry" way back when I was in college, to "Million Dollar Baby" which won 4 Oscars, to "Gran Torino". I cannot figure out, whether Clint Eastwood is a better actor or director. But you could not excel at either is you were not a remarkable human being. Gran Torino is an exquisite pearl, crafted by Clint Eastwood. It weaves the Asian American ethos beautifully, without being patronising.

The Terror
(2018)

An amazing serial. Must watch
I am unable to determine a single flaw in this film / serial. The direction, production, acting, VFX, scripting...absolutely stunning. It is a telling indictment of human civilisation. The one scene when the men eat a cadaver, with a knife and fork in excellent china, tells you everything you need to know about the Director's perspective. It is a film about heroism, camaraderie and betrayal. I will watch it several times again, just to savour production issues, I may have overlooked, as the narrative distracted me. Bravo

The Hungry
(2017)

Skip this poorly directed movie
The movie is like a bollywood production in that it lurches incoherently through a convoluted plot. The fact that is loosely based on Shakespeare's "The Lamentable Tradegy Of Titus Andronicus" is no excuse for "The Hungry"'s incoherence. The only reason I decided to watch this film, was because of Naseeruddin Shah. He is the only saving grace in this sorry film. Naseer is perfection as always. His stage presence, persona and aura is superlative. Bravo. If only the Director had more mettle.

Paatal Lok
(2020)

An amazing gripping show / serial
An amazing gripping show / serial. I had no intention of watching "Paatal Lok". I was unable to recognise any cast member, except for Gul Panag; and she has never impressed me much in the past. But this crime whodunit, grips you from the very first episode and keeps you on the edge right through. Jaideep Ahlawat is superb. He is such a subtle actor, I had no idea that I had seen him in Anurag Kashyap's "Gangs of Wasseypur". In fact the Director / Creator Sudip Sharma seems to have been influenced by Anurag's style and pacing. Sudip had written the screenplay of "Udta Punjab". Paatal Lok is an amazing serial. I look forward to it's following seasons

Berlin Syndrome
(2017)

A good watch
It is an interesting film. No known actors. Excellent direction and acting. The script is marvelous. Watch it.

Doctor Sleep
(2019)

Terrible. Skip it
This is not a Kubrick film. It may be based on a Stephen King book, but it is pathetic. The Shinning by Kubrick was a masterpiece.

The Hurt Locker
(2008)

Could not have been better
Could not have been better. Saw "Hurt Locker" today for the very first time. Just could not get my hands on it earlier. A powerful, very well directed film. A perfect screenplay, fabulous editing and sound engineering. Kathryn Bigelow knows how to narrate and has the master touch, which keeps the viewer on the edge, throughout the film. They seem to have got all the cultural nuances of the Iraqi people just right. There is a philosophical touch that elevates the film from an excellent film to being a masterpiece. Bravo

12 Years a Slave
(2013)

If ever there was a poignant slave story...this is it
If ever there was a poignant slave story...this is it. It makes difficult viewing on several occasions. You turn your eyes away, but the narrative lashes into your sensibilities. Excellent direction, writing and marvelous acting by Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Three Oscars do it credit. This was my second viewing of this masterpiece and it was as if it were my first. We Americans are repeatedly reminded about slavery and it's sordid legacy. This movie shoves your face into the entitlement that empowered the white man and woman to pummel all of humanity out of their property. A powerful film indeed. If a film does more than merely entertain you, then it serves it's purpose. If a film helps you evolve, then it ought to be savored like a good Merlot. Bravo...

Rocketman
(2019)

Not a biopic, a masterful production
Not a biopic, a masterful production. As with "Bohemian Rhapsody", I was never much of a Freddie Mercury fan, but loved the movie. I have been much into Elton John, but I adored the film. Film directors now a days, know how to create an enthralling narrative. Unlike Bohemian Rhapsody which had a clear narrative and kept you glued from start to finish; I finished seeing Rocketman over 2 days.

The Highwaymen
(2019)

A stunningly perfect film.
A stunningly perfect film. I was not expecting much of Kevin Costner as I have never considered him a good actor. The reason I wanted to watch this film was because of Kathy Bates and Woody Harrelson. Kathy is my goddess and I had the good fortune to have met her in person and I sat next to her during the screening of my friend's film in Los Angeles 25 years ago. In "The Highwaymen", Kathy had a minuscule role. She must have been on the screen all of 5 seconds ( I am kidding of course). But Mama can still deliver the goods. Woody Harrelson was superb as I had expected. But the real gem was Kevin Costner. He rendered such a masterful performance, that he ought to be receiving some major awards. Another gem was the director John Lee Hancock. An absolutely stellar masterpiece. Every frame, every scene was perfect. Costumes, production and set design ought to win awards too. A brilliant film. Makes you wonder what that Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway crap was all about.

The Laundromat
(2019)

Such a terrible pedestrian movie
Such a terrible pedestrian movie. The only two reasons that I was hooked into watching this utter crap was Steven Soderbergh and Meryl Streep.

This was probably one of the worst films Soderbergh has ever churned out. Meryl Streep was grossly under utilized in this film.

I am typically right about the quality of a film before 5 minutes are up. I hung on for the Soderbergh magic. There was none.

Skip this tripe. You would have saved an hour of your life.

Dunkirk
(2017)

An amazing film. Excellent direction, editing and sound
An enthralling experience. The incredible level of detail help contribute to make the entire film, a masterpiece. Kenneth Branagh and Harry Styles bring in the film we're unexpected bonuses. It was a perfect production. Was unable to discern a single error. It certainly deserved it's three Oscars. Would love to watch it a few times more over the years. Bravo

The Two Popes
(2019)

A truly remarkable film. A must see
A truly remarkable film. A must see. Excellent direction. Masterful acting by both Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins. The entire film is a graceful tango between the two. The film never slackens. Incredible direction and very well scripted. Could not have been done better. I am glad that the film goes into amazing detail about Pope Francis' very controversial past about his sympathies with the right-wing fascist Argentinian powers. However the film grossly disappoints by not even a suggestion about Ratzinger's Nazi past.

The Boys
(2019)

Such a stupid, juvenile show. I was unable to survive even 5 minutes
Such a stupid, juvenile show. I was unable to survive even 5 minutes. I decided to watch it, given the high rating and the reviews. But it is utter crap. I immediately cancelled the Season 1 download.

The Family Man
(2019)

Very watchable. Manoj Bajpai is excellent.
Well directed film. Excellent character development. The film vacillates between the protagonist's home life and work beautifully. Every character played very well by the entire cast. A lot of humour, excellent editing, soundtrack and a very well scripted show.

Revolutionary Road
(2008)

the movie savours like a fresh Merlot!
You cannot help comparing it to "Titanic". Very different movies, totally different genres. But the very same leading cast. And besides Leonardo and Kate there is the magnificent and indomitable Kathy Bates. It has been eleven years, both Leonardo and Kate have matured as actors. This film is a very mature film and the drama, the character development is so beautifully choreographed. Today is my second viewing, several years apart. But the movie savours like a fresh Merlot. Cheers to amazing direction and superb acting. The marvelous music and script make this masterpiece gel.

Hindi Medium
(2017)

An excellent film
You have to watch this delightful movie. Absolutely perfect. Marvelous acting by everyone. Excellent direction. A tear jerker. Irfan Khan is excellent. Saba Qamar: I saw her on screen for the first time. This woman has amazing stage presence.
