The Bat Whispers
(1930)

Great film to experience movie history
1930. Two years after the first talkie. Early cinematography techniques. Prohibition.

Enjoy this for what it is. A fun story with mystery, a spooky old house with secret passages, goofy characters, and a reveal at the end. The use of early cinematography techniques based on the stage is interesting and effective. The use of light, shadow, and silhouettes in an old black and white film is interesting. I like thinking of this type of movie in the context of the time it was made. Imagine joining others to watch it in the theater in 1930 when it came out. And it also made me think it might be the inspiration for Batman. It's a movie to enjoy and take a peek into another era. So glad this one was saved.

The Professor and the Madman
(2019)

Great!
Sean Penn displays why he has a reputation as one of the greatest actors of all time. His performance is wonderful. And Mel Gibson is great in this too. The acting was great all around. The story and directing and filming snd settings and just great all around. I do love great acting.

The Umbrella Academy
(2019)

Not a fan of hero movies but LOVE this one
I'm a mystery lover and I like science fiction. I don't get excited about marvel superhero movies. This one though has mystery, has unique aspects, has science fiction. I love this series. So much fun!

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet
(2013)

I loved it!
I enjoyed this film very much. The quirky characters. The way the boy is telling the story. The very well done what I will call "asides" - the imaginative visualizations of the boy's thoughts and memories that are interspersed in his telling of his story. And that's what this is - a lovely story. It's not about accuracy like another reviewer complained about. It's a very pleasant escape from reality where nothing bad happens to a 10 year old traveling alone from Montana to DC and everything ends happily. I like happy endings and I like make believe.

Space Force
(2020)

Very enjoyable
I was very pleasantly surprised by how good this is. I'm not a fan of stupid humor and I expected this to be stupid humor but it's not. It's balanced between silly humor and seriousness. The humor made me laugh and the more serious bits mellowed out the silliness. Carrell is very good in this and I'm not a big Carrell fan. All the actors are very good. I look forward to next season.

What Did Jack Do?
(2017)

Another David Lynch Puzzle
I loved Twin Peaks. Full of odd mystery. So I saw this was a David Lynch film and knew I was in for the odd. I'm not sure what to make of it. That was probably his intention. But one thing I noticed but haven't seen talked about was that the dialogue was a string of cliches. Makes me wonder why - what meaning is he conveying by that. I was glad it was short because it was strange and I couldn't figure out what he was doing with it. He loved to put out puzzles. And I hate it when I feel that I'm not up to the challenge.

Star Trek: Discovery
(2017)

Love love love this Star Trek!
The big geek question is Star Trek or Star Wars. I am a Star Trek fan. I love that it's a story about our future. Our technology. It focuses on ideals of peace and an ideal vision of what humanity can be. That appeals to me.

This new series adheres to that formula and injects so many exciting new adventures. The characters are well developed. The storyline progresses beautifully. The only disappointment is that I have to wait a week for the next episode.

I love love love this new Star Trek!

Gravity
(2013)

Intense
I didn't think I'd like this film. But I was kept on the edge of my seat. The film just jumped right into the action. And nothing was gratuitous. Everything was set up to add to the intensity. And I felt that I was right there with her with the fear, the desperation, the hope, the determination, the frustration, the despair, that last wild ... Bullock was great! The direction was excellent. I was delighted with my experience.

A Christmas Carol
(2019)

New version with updated take on Dickens' message is redemption
I really enjoyed this movie. I am a big fan of A Christmas Carol and have seen many versions of it. Dickens' story is a simple story of redemption. This version adds additional levels to the message. In addition to the message that we can all change and although we may have done horrible things in the past it is our current and future actions that matter, in this version they touch on forgiveness and self responsibility. The way these new messages are presented I don't agree with but they were clear and new. Scrooge isn't redeemable until he admits that his past actions are unforgivable - he doesn't forgive himself nor does anyone else. In fact using his childhood experiences as an excuse is clearly frowned upon. I believe forgiveness is necessary and that using excuses is not the same thing as forgiveness. So I found these messages interesting because they were so clearly presented. As for the movie I liked the acting for the most part. I liked the adaptation but it was a bit flimsy. Given my love of this story I missed some things that were taken out. The scene where the maids had stolen Ebenezer's bed curtains in the original story was to show that he was unloved and alone in his last days. This was not an important point of this version. Also his nephew showing up to invite Scrooge to dinner had no follow up. Why bother putting it in? As a matter of fact this version was not about relationships at all. He doesn't make Cratchet a partner and continue a relationship with the family. He doesn't go to his nephew's house and ask forgiveness so he can have a relationship with his nephews family. He doesn't make contributions to charities to build relationships with the community. It's implied he'll do good things but in the original version it was about relationships and love. This one is a colder lesson in redemption being a solitary goal without hope for forgiveness. Dickens' stories always had messages and this modern version maintains that tradition.

Seatbelt Psychic
(2018)

Disappointed there was only 1 season
Loved this show! I liked seeing how people reacted when he told them he's a psychic. And his messages were so clear. He helped so many people. I liked hearing their stories and the healing messages that came through.

The Masked Singer
(2019)

So much fun!
I love this show! The costumes are fabulous! And I love the contestants. I like hearing their stories and clues. And the performances can be quite surprising. I don't know how they do it in those heavy, complicated costumes and masks. And the unveiling is always fun. I also like that it moves so fast. The panel can get super silly but that's just part of the show. Don't listen to those harsh reviews. The show is not about glamour and big budget nonsense. It's simply unapologetically fun.

A good story
I enjoyed the story. It is a mix of magical mystery and romance. It is a movie where you need to pay attention to the clues given throughout so the ending has a meaning.

I've read the negative reviews like one expressing irritation that it wasn't explained. But there is a whole lot of explanation in the pieces. There isn't someone stating explicitly what happened like at the end of a British who-done-it but enough to understand yet remain affected by the mystical.

If you like cerebral movies, as in ones that make you think, then you should like this one.

IO
(2019)

A waste of time
I really liked that this movie was about the aftermath of humans ruining earth - a topic that we are grappling with right now with the debate around global warming. However, the movie was sooooo slow! It didn't make any point at all. We screwed up Earth so we leave.

The X Files
(1993)

Loved season 11!
I loved the variety of interesting episodes along with the subtle humor. It's very much like I remember the show from before". I also loved the ongoing story of their son. I really hope the Xfiles continues. Am very much looking forward to the next season!

Young Sheldon
(2017)

Enjoyable
I have a problem with the reviewers complaining about how Sheldon is such a brat and at the same time say they watch TBBT. If they watch that show then they must know Sheldon is a brat. In this show, though, we have a 9 year old version of a bratty Sheldon. In both cases he isn't bratty because he's spoiled or mean hearted. He's bratty because he's a genius and a social simpleton. That's the point. I Iiked the show right off but I can also say that it has improved as these brief, less than 30 minute, episodes are able to develop the characters and relationships more. One reviewer complained about the lack of character development after only watching the first show! I also think the actor playing young Sheldon is doing a great job. As with the adult Sheldon the young Sheldon is sincere, wants to be good, knows his own mind but also knows that he doesn't understand social norms and so listens to those close to him although he reserves the right to not accept those norms. I enjoy the family dynamic and the situations that arise because he's special. This family is much more realistic than the Malcom in the Middle family, a show one reviewer touted as being at a level this show couldn't come up to. The characters in MITM were ridiculously stupid. The characters in Young Sheldon each ha ve a unique personality and do things that you have seen others do or can imagine others doing, like Sheldon's brother trying chewing tobacco, repeatedly spitting it out in disgust then saying "I must be doing something wrong". The writing warms the heart as we watch a family moving past disagreements and difficulties caused by their special Sheldon - all realizing that they love him and he's family which is more important than those disagreements and difficulties.

Grace and Frankie
(2015)

Started out good but tired of Frankie character
I loved this show for the first couple seasons. I am impressed with Jane Fonda's performance. I never liked her before but she is so believable in this. I liked that the show dealt with older women's issues too. The gay angle was an interesting twist.

What I don't like I guess is the writing. Everyone gives in to Frankie's tantrums. It's no longer believable. Frankie never adjusts - just bullies everyone else. It's not funny any more. Tired of it. And Sol too is annoying too. Again like he possesses the only truth and everyone needs to catch up. Can't watch it any more. So disappointing because I thought this was a keeper.

I'd like to see the writing address real world issues with humor like they are doing with the older women's issues. The stupid Frankie behavior is a distraction that doesn't add anything.

Once Upon a Time
(2011)

Great Show
I have been following this show since the beginning. Each episode provides a surprise which I find addicting. This is a great show. The "witch" is someone you love to hate. Rumpelstiskin is a mystery . Is he evil or does he have a heart? What motivates him? Will prince charming and Snow White get together? Who is this woman posing as his wife? Is she really married to him? How will Snow White's daughter save them? And how will he son aid her? There are so many mysteries to grab your interest until the next episode. I also like the way they juxtaposition the past with the present. And the characters are unique. I really appreciate a show with well developed characters. If you haven't tried this show you are missing out.
