The Crown
(2016)

Don't let the truth get in the way of a story.
This series looks good, is videography and sets are very good.

Acting is OK too.

What lets it down is that the scriptwriters thought nothing of being historically accurate. For instance official papers, released and available for public viewing, show that The Queen never tried to force her sister not to marry Peter Townsend. Indeed the papers show that an act of Parliament would be passed, if she wanted to marry him, that removed Margaret from the line of succession but left her with her royal titles etc. It was Margaret who decided not to marry Peter Townsend, after a visit to him in Belgium. But either lazy script-writing, or the desire to perpetuate a myth, gives entirely the wrong impression of what happened.

There is enough within the long reign of The Queen that could easily be portrayed accurately and entertain us with a good story without the need to resort to tawdry misrepresentations.

The Goldbergs
(2013)

It must be something in the water.
I am guessing there must be something in the water in USA that makes people think this show is funny.

For some, unfathomable, reason it is being shown in the UK and I watched a few episodes, just to be sure I wasn't unfairly judging it.

The premise might be amusing, but the writing and actual scenarios are so bad that the whole show is simply dreadful. The acting, by and large, is mediocre to say the least. It is not necessary to shout the whole time, someone should tell them that.

Cutting edge comedy this is not. In fact I would go further, comedy it is not.

In fact I would guess that it is really a very bad pastiche of what might have been a humorous show if well written, and if the scriptwriter avoided every cliché imaginable.

Mercifully my remote control has a button for changing channel, and it is used every time this show appears on screen.

How I Met Your Mother
(2005)

Dire in the extreme
This really is the most awful show. Clichéd writing and amateurish performances makes this a decidedly disappointing viewing experience. Time to bring it all to an end and move on to something watchable.

The situations are poor and the execution of them is laboured. It is almost as though a team of writers have come together to think up the most obvious, in your face, situations and have then proceeded script them. One of the disadvantages of teams of scriptwriters on a show is that the ideas pass through a committee stage and most of the good ones don't get through.

If it were not for the US The Office I would award this the worst comedy ever.

Spies of Warsaw
(2013)

Thoroughly enjoyable! Quality drama!
What a marvellous 2 parter. The acting and settings were very good indeed. The story moved very nicely, building the appropriate tensions throughout. Based on a novel by Alan Furst, of whom I had never heard, it was historically accurate(with the exception of some British beer mugs in Prague). I hope the makers will give us more of the novels in the same format.

The first part was sufficient to make me buy the first of the Night Soldiers novels by Alan Furst. Having already read it, I shall now read the rest of the series, in sequence, so a way to go before I reach Spies of Warsaw.

Call the Midwife
(2012)

Very enjoyable, if divergent from the book.
I would have scored 10 for this series, except for the fact that it doesn't truly follow the accounts written in the book from which it is taken.

Some of the diversions from the book are to allow the characters other than Jenny Lee to have stronger story lines, which I can accept to an extent. But some of the story lines have been expanded for dramatic effect, so they are not relying upon the original author's memoirs, but rather the imagination of the scriptwriters, which I think is somewhat regrettable.

Having said that I am finding the series entirely watchable, and enjoyable. All the cast seem to be good, but I must say I am most impressed with Miranda Hart as Chummy, what a brick she is.
