The Fall of the House of Usher
(2023)

Poe would be proud
Just loved Flanagan's prevoius work and this one is a worthy farewell to Netflix.

I guess one should be familiar with E. A. Poe's stories to enjoy it to the fullest, but it works well without knowing a word of Poe.

Just loved the way Poe's stories were recycled and set in modern era, making it relevant, spiced with a Faustian twist, combined with our current issues - AI, opioid crisis and Purdue Pharma, the Usher family is clear analogue of the Sacklers.

The cast did their best, especially Carla Gugino and the Flanagan debutant Bruce Greenwood.

I personally would have liked it darker and more gothic, and Flanagan's previous works dug deeper in terror and scare. I missed the real psychological dread which was so brilliantly executed in Hill House.

Dracula
(2020)

Twisted and entertaining
I am a fan of the creators' Sherlock series, I expected a new approach of the story - and it did not disappoint.

Everybody knows the story, seen it many times. Gatiss and Moffat were brave enough not to tell the same old tale. They pay homage to previous adaptations without repeating them, keeping it fresh and contemporary with well written dialogues (just like Sherlock).

Claes Bang is an excellent choice for the role of Dracula - bitter, bored, intelligent and witty, very aware of the fact that he is a monster and enjoying every minute of it.

Dolly Wells did an amazing job, as well, their shared scenes glued me to the screen - especially the ending.

"After all this time, did you think I'd let it hurt?",

Inside Man
(2022)

People make terrible choices
Finally something I have not seen before. I saw real people in situations they have never dreamt of dealing with. They make choices, as in life, mostly not the right ones and while they try to make things better, things get just worse.

Some reviewer are complaining about "plot holes", but I think it is just life, we must play our roles without knowing the scenario.

David Tennant and Stanley Tucci are fabulous - as always, make the characters and their actions totally credible.

As for me, I would really like to see a new season, where Stanley Tucci is solving cases with his inmate, Dillon - , just like Sherlock and Watson.

Persuasion
(2022)

Fleabag meets Bridgerton
Austen's best novel destroyed by diverse acting and modernisation. Anne Elliott's character is Fleabag meets Bridget Jones, seems ridiculous. Dakota Johnson had zero chemistry with Cosmo Jarvis's Wentworth - which would have been essential to believe they were meant for each other.

The creators liked Bridgerton for sure but the diverse cast worked terribly in this case - c'mon guys, we actually read the novel.

Lots of inspiration came from Fleabag obviously, but the wry glances at the camera were pretty annoying.

Midnight Mass
(2021)

Flanagan did it again
Really liked how the story is built up, slow burn and carefully dosed details... meanwhile the characters are also developing.

I was happy to see familiar faces from Hill House and Bly Manor and Hamish Linklater was stellar in the role of the priest.

Flanagan did it again, added an interesting twist to the horror genre and an awful lot to think about - such as what happens to us when and after we die?

Looking forward to his future works.

Scenes from a Marriage
(2021)

About marriage
I could not take my eyes off of the first two episodes... I divorced and had a hard breakup, I just recognised so many of memories... it was intense, painful sometimes.

I guess many of us can see her/himself in these situations, happened to us before and will, undoubtedly.

We are not alone in this.

If you are young, never been in a serious relationship or married before, you shouldn't watch it.

Anthony Zimmer
(2005)

French movies are the best
Watched it many times and still find it amazing.

Watching Yvan Attal's transformation from a regular guy to the master criminal and Sophie Marceau's inner fight between love and duty... just superb acting.

Do not ever watch The Tourist, please... huge disappointment.

The Undoing
(2020)

Whodunit with a twist
I liked this show, the plot, the twists, the cliffhangers worked fine for me. I loved the beautiful pictures of New York, great addition to the show. The biggest surprise was Hugh Grant and his stellar performance, loved watching every minute of it. The low point was Nicole Kidman, absolutely unbelievable as a hot shot psychiatrist. It is hard to act without facial expressions and she has not much left - mostly wide opened eyes full of tears. The final episode is great and surprising enough, but should have worked on the abrupt ending.

Rebecca
(2020)

When the book is far better than the movie
Read the novel, please! There is so much more in this story, and the movie only scratches the surface. The casting seemed really promising, but without a good script and a director, sadly disappointing end result. Could have been a great movie, such a shame, so many opportunities are missed.

Away
(2020)

Not the usual sci-fi
This is a really good series for those who are interested not only in the space adventures but in the personal aspects of the astronauts, as well. What does it really cost to leave everyone and everything behind pursuing a dream - to be the first on Mars. We don't know yet. The background stories could have gone deeper, though, in some cases we are just scratching the surface. There was no cliffhanger at the end, but there are lot of possibilities and storylines for another season, at least. I would watch what comes next.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels
(2020)

Penny what??
I just loved the first series, was really looking forward to the spinoff. Sorry to say, just can't figure out this show, what was this all about... there are not even traces of excitement, thrill, darkness. Art direction is great, good actors but the story is just not enough. Too bad.

Endings, Beginnings
(2019)

Not a fairytale but life
I guess this film is about real life and real people. How messed up we are, and relationships, how extremely complicated is everything. The actors did an amazing job, since all dialogues were improvised, no written script. The movie has a certain atmosphere that catches you where music and cinematography are in harmony, and you'll have a great deal to think about way after "the end".

I Know This Much Is True
(2020)

Great show
Amazing TV, where a good material meets the perfect director and cast. Mark Ruffalo delivers a superb performance, did not expect less, but the real surprise and wow for me is Kathryn Hahn, this show is a real game changer for her.

Hollywood
(2020)

Fresh and original
I really liked this show, finally something new and enjoyable. No sequel-prequel-spinoff. New faces and amazing, older actors: Patti LuPone, Joe Mantello, Holland Taylor are brilliant in their roles and Dylan McDermott is absolutely stunning! And Jim Parsons finally in a role where I could really hate him. Coloured people, gays, female rights - all these issues are addressed in the golden era of Hollywood. Lot's of "what if" where real people are mixed with fictional characters. And why not?? Yes, soapy sometimes but isn't is what we need in these horrible times. Just watch it and have fun.

6 Underground
(2019)

What is this film about???!!
I just could not figure out the point of this movie... who are these people? Why would they choose to be a ghost? Lots of action scenes where obviously money did not matter, typical Michael Bay cinematography - but unfortunately the plot is confusing. On the plus side, finally new faces in blockbuster movies but with these assets it could have been a much better movie.

The Affair: Episode #5.11
(2019)
Episode 11, Season 5

Great ending of a great series
The final season of a TV series is a difficult problem, and most of the time the audience Is left with nothing but the bitter feeling of the screenwriters and directors poor work. Not in this case! Superb screenplay, amazing acting and great directing! Watching this was like reading a very good book, it ended but lots of issues are here to think about: love, forgiveness, family, pain - and life. One of the best TV series ever.

Billions: Extreme Sandbox
(2019)
Episode 12, Season 4

Hardly wait till next season
One of the few TV series that keeps you on the edge after 4 seasons. Not boring, no cliches. Authentic characters brought to life by amazing actors and the writers do their job perfectly. Exciting season finale with many twists - not the usual end-of-season- cliffhanger, I am actually curious where things will go and how this duell will end for Bobby and Chuck. Looking forward to season 5!

Chernobyl: 1:23:45
(2019)
Episode 1, Season 1

Deeply moving and disturbing subject
I was completely heartbroken watching the first episode. Based largely on facts, depicting actual persons - hard to see how many people had to die just because of the denial of the actual regime. Looking forward to more episodes.

The Haunting of Hill House
(2018)

Great storytelling, amazing acting
Horror stories are not my thing, but this show has captured me from the first episode. Characters are built up perfectly, and the actors are doing their best. I have never seen such a great child actors than in this show! Scary and thrilling in the best way - simply does not let you go.

A Discovery of Witches
(2018)

Better than the book
I accidentally watched the first episode and was amazed by the story and the actors - so got the novel and read it in a few days. The book was surprisingly disappointing, though historically accurate, somehow did not enjoy at all. The TV series went on and found the storyline exciting and intense, the writers did a great job!!! Lot better than the book itself.

Harrow
(2018)

Another "Forever"
I don't know where all this is heading - but how on earth can Ioan Gruffudd play almost the same character as in Forever??! Another pathologist with a dark/misterious past. Mixture of lots of have seenn before.

The Wizard of Lies
(2017)

Highly anticipated, very disappointed
I was really looking forward to this version of Bernie Madoff's story, mostly because of Robert De Niro. The story is a great material and I still cannot fully comprehend how on earth could he continue his "business" for so long, that no-one has suspected anything, neither his sons, nor his wife or the employees at his company. Life writes the greatest scripts, but in this case the result is a boring, flat story. I expected some explanation, or more insight. But nothing. Just scratching the surface. I could not feel sorry for the victims and could not judge Madoff's actions. Even De Niro could not breathe life into the character. Seriously, watch the 2parts TVmovie with Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner, makes more sense.

House of Cards
(2013)

Best TV show
I can only speak highly of this show - in all terms screenplay, casting, acting, aditing and directing. When I watch this show I feel what I have not felt for a long time, that there is simply no weakness of it, I cannot complain of anything, there is no low point. Other shows, even the better ones always lack of something and not giving me the sensation of completeness. Most of the time the story runs out even before halftime, sometimes the second season is a real disappointment. I could not wait to see S02 and I have to admit I was afraid that could this really be as good as the S01? And so it did, went far beyond my expectations. Kevin Spacey is one of the greatest actors of our time, sadly have not been acknowledged for this role so far, hope it will change soon. For me the only problem is that even I love the Netflix format, no ads or waiting one or two weeks between episodes, though I must say that I watch the episodes one after another in a row and I feel sorry that it ends so soon! :-) Obviously, patience is not my strongest suit, now I have a chance to work on it, since I certainly will have to wait another year to see President Underwood on the battlefield of deception.

Rock of Ages
(2012)

Wow... Greatest surprise
If I will ever like a Tom Cruise, it will happen because of this movie. It was such a great surprise for me, I could hardly believe to my ears at first and then my eyes when I read that Tom Cruise himself was singing! And actually pretty well! Besides his singing, I also think he gave an incredible performance as Stacee Jaxx. I do not think that rock stars are like him in this movie, but as a stereotype, he is awesome and gives everything into his role. Of course there are weak points of the film, such as the script, but if you have no great expectations, the movie is really fun. And clearly every actor enjoyed the making of it. The rock and roll is forever, it is a fact now. I keep listening the soundtrack over and over again... :-)
