Born to Dance
(2015)

A generic dance movie, with a New Zealand twist
Dance movies, a genre that has been done over and over, and generally follows the same recipe. A down on their luck person who is amazing at dancing but is given an ultimatum, if they don't do something with their life there will be consequences, so miraculously an opportunity pops up and they have the shot to try out for their dream, their dancing dream, *insert love triangle here*, usually they do well, then something happens so they can no longer dance, and then as we all know they find a way to dance again and do amazing and everyone loves them and they win, they always freaking win! This movie pretty much followed that exact storyline, which isn't bad of course, but is predictable, it will most likely leave you satisfied, The movie I wasn't sure if it could be classified as a part comedy or really just a music drama, maybe it's the fact some of the acting is below par and that watching other New Zealanders trying to be serious is slightly embarrassing and awkward.....I don't know, maybe I'm over-analysing it. But I'll get into some semantics:

Bad points: the accent, I get it, it's set in South Auckland but not all Nzers sound like that, and when they talk like that I don't believe it makes it internationally sell-able, the acting, well, apparently most of the 'actors' are dancers not actors, so that's pretty self explanatory, the storyline - leaves little to the imagination.

Good points: It was enjoyable as a whole, I wouldn't be against recommending it, it was light-hearted and easy to follow, but the best thing about it was the dancing! it was sooo 'en pointe'....see what I did there?....dancing reference...no?....sorry haha, but no in all seriousness the dancing was amazing, not surprising considering the choreography was done by Parris Goebel who didn't she win the Hip Hop world champs several times? and name drop, was a choreographer for Jennifer Lopez! That's right, of course that part was going to be amazing! The music was good too, slight request though, if a singer is acting in the movie please refrain from featuring more than one of your songs....it is a little bit cringey, unless the movie is about you, then let it go. You act or have your songs featured, it's not a music documentary...Stan Walker *cough* *cough* Scribe *large cough*....wait, Scribe is still around... he was hosting the event, he's taken up acting, what is this! I also like that they they represented the gay community, slightly over- exaggerated but hey what do I know.

To wrap it up, it was good, but not amazing if you want to see a light-hearted movie with fantastic dancing go see this movie, don't hold your breath for any amazing plot twists or any new story lines cause you are not going to get that here.

The Dead Room
(2015)

It was entertaining, but not anything different
I heard a lot about this movie, so was pretty excited to see it, plus the fact that it was filmed in NZ and I'm a New Zealander was an even bigger incentive to see it. I also saw that it was filmed using the new Rumble technology which seemed really cool, I wonder if it was the cinema I was in....cause i don't believe it worked, a shame really, but onward.

Dead room is based on an urban legend of a small farmhouse in Otago, New Zealand, where two science teachers in the 1970s visit the rural farmhouse to debunk claims the house is haunted. They reportedly flee because of some terrifying and unexplained events.

This movie was somewhat generic, not scary, I believe, nor was it suspenseful, I pretty much saw what was coming and what was going to happen. I suppose you could look at it like "good job New Zealand, little pat on the back there for you". Otherwise the acting was okay, not too bad, it was a bit touch and go in some parts, like when she falls on the floor and becomes possessed, you'll get what I mean if you see it, and some of the girls moments could have been like she was genuinely a lot more scared...considering she had the distinct advantage of actually seeing the spirit. The storyline was decent though and seemed genuinely thought out, and the use of technology was smart and the set was scary, so that was a good touch.

This movie was good in the fact that it built up to events, it let us feel for the characters, feel safe with them, and then feel fear with them at the same time. But its the ending that can't make me justify an amazing rating. To me, the ending fell a bit flat, everything happened so fast, the last ten minutes everything just went really bad and everyone started disappearing and then it just ended with a final scene of the evil spirit, I believe it would have been better if it was left to our imagination like in Blair Witch Project...but that's just my opinion.

Overall it was alright, it would be worth a watch if you want to see New Zealand's take on horror, and to see something that has a somewhat decent twist at the end, where the original bad guy is not as bad as he seems.

Miss You Already
(2015)

Sad movie, but funny too.
This is a pretty sad movie, I didn't cry, but the other cinema goers when I went were breaking down. It's a beautiful story, and can be relate able to females, or males I suppose, who have a really best friend that no matter what life throws your friendships way, whether it be relationships, schools, interests, jobs etc, that you will still always find your way back to one another.

I did have a slight problem with this film however, the god damn camera work, WTF Catherine Hardwicke!!! (Director) can you like give us less than twenty thousand close up shots, and more than two establishing shots! Please, and thank you. **These are estimates only** It's like she tried to make this a really indie film where everything was close and intimate, but it was just annoying and shaky and a pain in my ass.

The acting was really well done though, like really well done, and maybe I'm biased because I'm like a really big Drew Barrymore fan, but I thought she was amazing and funny as per usual and Toni Collette? she was amazing too, and dare I say she did a pretty good English accent. They both had a really good chemistry and were believable as best friends.

It's fair to note though, that Milly (Collette) had cancer throughout the movie and was really self- centered and annoying throughout the movie, and Jess (Barrymore) was either pregnant, or trying to get pregnant throughout the movie so that was a random as bit to the movie. The husbands? sod off, most aren't that understanding and amazing at ALL times, so they could have toned that down a little bit.

Otherwise overall it was a good movie and is a touching more light- hearted look at the serious effects of cancer.

*Recommendation: Take a box of tissues if you cry easily.

The Martian
(2015)

It was good, but it wasn't anything new.
I enjoyed this movie, but I didn't love it, not like I loved Gravity. That doesn't go to say though that the acting wasn't amazing, the science wasn't well thought out and the graphics and CGI weren't all very well done, because they were!

I think what was missing for me was that complete sense of loneliness and that eerie feeling that I feel being alone on a massive planet, with barely any communication with anyone, and no life besides him and his crops, honestly, that part could have been done better. Think about it, how damn scary would that be, knowing that you won't see anyone or talk to anyone in many many years. I know I would feel pretty scared.

It was a great movie though, and I assume it will be up for some awards. I recommend seeing it at the movies so you can get that atmosphere from watching it on the big screen, and when a movie with space is involved I always recommend seeing it at the movies as it creates that whole sense of a large space, a very large space.

Most viewers will love it! Matt Damon was amazing as per usual and it's worth a watch.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
(2015)

Some pretty harsh reviews out there!
So, I saw an advanced preview of this film so there wasn't many ratings up. After the preview I looked and it was rating around an average of 5 out of 10.....did I miss something? I loved this movie, not enough to give it a 10, but enough.

I think the main thing to focus on this film is the 3D, if you see it in 2D you have made a terrible terrible mistake. The 3D is amazing!! It actually legitimately makes you jump as the objects hurtle towards you, I flinched. Then the 3D element isn't just carried out with tricks like that, but actually all throughout the movie, as you see specks of the demons black liquid stuff (best way I can describe that) floating around, and it looks like you can reach out and touch it and the camera they use to see the demon (you'll see if you watch the movie) looks good in 3D.

Sure, the actual storyline wasn't the absolute best, and the CGI was slightly less convincing....cause let's face it, when is CGI ever really truly convincing. But the acting was good, a believable family and an amazingly creepy little girl, and it was a genuinely thought out plot, easy to follow, carried on from the other films (so tied up loose ends), a little bit scary, a little bit nail biting. Overall a good horror movie.

Go see it, but....see it in 3D, or you will miss out on the intended experience!

Inside Out
(2015)

A true masterpiece
I have seen many movies in my life, and many cartoons at that. At my age though you tend to watch a lot of cartoons that are funny and have a message yes, but seem to be missing something, that of a true real message, and that's what this movie achieves, WARNING, contains a spoiler, so read on at your own expense.

This film I would consider a true modern masterpiece, about a little girl Riley and the emotions that run her little world, and the one emotion that rules most of her world, and that being the emotion of Joy. Joy is in a way selfish, but at the same time you understand why, because everyone wants to be happy right, and that's what Joy's number one priority is, to make sure Riley grows up happy and cheery and to have memories that can make her smile, ones that define her personality, an overall happy, goofy girl with a passion for ice hockey, which in itself is a beautiful premise. Then we have the emotion you find yourself hating, and that's sadness, she's cute, but throughout she seems selfish touching all the joyous memories to make them sad, and doesn't listen to Joy when she tells her not to touch anything as she is gloomy and makes Riley, well, sad.

But I'll cut to the chase of the most beautiful thing about this movie. It is funny and cute, but it's actually also very sad I found myself at times holding back tears, and its not often I feel sad during a movie, but you begin to feel sad for Sadness as she feels unwanted and everything she does is not wanted by any of the emotions, in particular her opposite Joy, but this movies message begins to unravel when Joy and Sadness are sucked out of the control room and with just the other three emotions present we see that without Joy and Sadness that Riley begins to shut down and begins to lose who she is because they show us that with Anger in control for example that you begin to make irrational decisions and find that the people around you begin to dislike you because of your attitude, and that the idea of running away is a rash decision, and is in fact not the best solution at all.

But at the end of it all the emotions finally realise one beautiful thing, that without sadness in ones life, you cannot enjoy the simple joys in life. That in order to appreciate the things around you, the passions, people and environment that make you who you could potentially be, that you must truly experience things that are really sad so that people can help you, comfort you and that you yourself can overcome them and see the good in all the small things.

And in the end its finally realised by Joy that in order for Riley to grow, that Joy needs to give up control and have all of them take an equal role in letting Riley gain the experiences she needs to become the person who she needs to be, and that sadness is not bad at all, but there to help us overcome some of the hardest challenges in our lives, so that eventually we can eventually find and appreciate the joys in something else, and with this realisation we also see that instead of having singular emotional memories that as Riley gets older we start to see memories that are a combination of several emotions, to help us see the way we change as humans, that we learn to cope with many emotions at the same time, to help guide us and make us stronger people in life and that overall to have joy we must have sadness and vice versa.

Fantastic!

The Avengers
(2012)

Fourth Time Lucky?
When this movie was first about to hit theatres, I won tickets to go to see the advance preview. Unfortunately/fortunately, I choose the latter, I was not able to attend as I wasn't in the region of the preview at the time....THANK GOD! because if I had had a whole days sleep, woke up and attended this movie I still would have fallen asleep watching this drivel. I have attempted, and I emphasis the word attempted, to watch this movie three times before I was able to watch it in full finally after a fourth attempt. I fail to see how this movie scored so damn high....I could literally put a bunch of chimps into a room and they could write a script at the absolute least two times better than this movie. I could also think of more fun activities to do instead of watching this, for example: stabbing two pencils into my eyes and moving them around for the duration of this film....exaggerated....yeah well so is this film and the hype that surrounds it. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate Joss Whedon and his works e.g. Buffy (Brilliant) and Dollhouse (inspired) but this movie was an absolute miss, why people rave and rate this movie good baffles me (I had to say this again because I just can't work it out). No character development, and yes I get that you don't really need that as they all have their own individual movies (so I recommend just watching them) and why put the black widow in here, did she even use powers?? all I saw was her using pistols, was she supposed to appeal and be empowering to the female audience?? cause if so I missed that memo, and the fact that there was so much CGI use they don't need that, they are superheroes for Pete's sake SUPERHEROES! and don't even get me started on the amount of fighting, yay fun, its an action, but some was just pointless, where on earth do I even need to put any thought into this movie let alone see what the heck is going on cause the explosions and gunshots are so distracting, I think I have literally put more thought into writing this review than the amount of thought running through my mind whilst watching this movie. Pretty sure my IQ dropped even knowing about, let alone attempting to watch it this many times. What can I say, I'm a trier. I'm giving this movie a 1/10 I would give it a zero but I felt the scene at the very end of the credits when all the heroes are sitting in the diner with the bored tired looks on their faces depicted exactly how I felt after watching this movie. Plus I can't rate it zero.. Don't watch it, and if you do don't say I didn't try save you 2 hours and 23 minutes of your life.

WiseGirls
(2002)

Definitely worth a watch
So after all this time of mucking around, not watching this movie, I finally decided to give it a watch. It had a promising plot line and fell under some of my favourite genres. Not to mention it had Mariah Carey in it so thought heck she can sing so may as well check out how good her acting is. I was pleasantly surprised, this was a genuinely good movie. I was constantly guessing what was going to happen! (of course there was some predictable bits but when isn't there in a movie right?) But it was the end that was actually worth waiting out for it actually surprised me as in threw me in one direction and then back in another, if you watch it you will see what I mean. Overall though the characters were well developed you could pick who was your favourite...or who you hated, and you couldn't fault the acting cause they were all actually pretty flawless. That's why I can't understand this rating on IMDb what are these people rating on? goes to show that sometimes just watch the movie anyway cause you could be pleasantly surprised. Give it a watch and you will hopefully be relatively impressed if not very.

(2012)

Needs more character development
When I first read the overall plot line of this film I have to say I instantly thought the film to be promising....I was not disappointed. This film is pretty sadistic and is not for the faint of heart, I have to say some of the things that were done in this film I cringed a little...I don't do that very often! It had a good array of main characters, some being more well known that others and I think Brittany Snow gave a stellar performance. However...I have to rate this movie down a bit, as the character development was lacking...actually now I think about there was none at all. I think if we got to know the characters more that as a viewer we would have been able to connect and feel more emotions towards them and be able to pick who we liked and who we wanted to survive...or die, either way I think it would have enabled us to feel something other than just watching these cruel acts and not understanding why exactly they are going through these. To finish up, if you like films where people will do anything for money and watching some good ol' horror cruelty then watch this...if you wanna know why they are doing it for money however...you will not find out. It is good though and I thoroughly enjoyed it and therefore deserves the rating.
