The New Guy
(2002)

It's not about the story. It's about the fun.
A lot of people will say the plot of this movie was lame, predictable and dumb and yeah, they're right. But this kind of movie isn't about a brilliant plot. It's about interesting characters and silly gags and parodying those more serious types of movies. There are some funny lines, sight gags and slapstick, some cute girls, the bad guys get what's coming to them and the good guys win. Throw in some surprising celebrity cameos (some of which you might not catch until the credits roll) and a great soundtrack that mixes old and new songs and that's what I call entertainment.

The cast is noteworthy too. DJ Qualls, of course, Zooey Deschanel (the chick from Elf), Eddie Griffin, Lyle Lovett, Jerod Mixon, Parry Shen, Matt Gogin etc. did a fine job. If you can watch a movie without being hypercritical about how "bad" it is, then get this, sit back a have some laughs

Joe Somebody
(2001)

Not really a comedy
I can't say that this was a bad movie, but it wasn't really a comedy either. It was more of a feel-good romance story with a message about being yourself and doing what you really want to do rather than doing things that will make others like you or that are somebody else's idea of success.

The three main characters, Joe, Meg - the Wellness co-ordinator at the Pharmaceutical Corporation where Joe works and Joe's daughter experience that sort of realisation during the film and in the end are better people and happier for doing what they want to do and being who they want to be.

As such, the film has a positive moral and happy ending. But it's definitely more cheesy than funny. The funniest part is probably the advertisement for one of the drugs.

Longitude
(2000)

An excellent intellectual adventure!!
All great stories deal with conflict and overcoming difficulties. The vast majority of films that are produced thesedays feature heros who triumph based on who is a bigger bad ass or has got the biggest guns or bombs. Here is a film that has virtually no 'action' other than a few cannons fired and a lashing or two during the parts at sea, but is filled with the sort of tension and drama that keeps the viewer constantly involved.

If you enjoy intelligent movies, then you should definitely seek this film out. It sounds dreadfully boring if you read the plot summary, but it isn't. It is wonderfully written and produced and contains much light humor as well, making it truly entertaining.

One film that it reminded me of is "Master and Commander" because of the similar scenes of the British navy and the theme of the struggle of science and progress in the face of war and politics with intelligence and perseverance winning out in the end.

The interwoven story of Rupert Gould is just as interesting and provides an artistic counterpoint to the main story. Again, we have the story of a man who continues with his work in spite of numerous obstacles of the most serious magnitude because he knows that the world will be a better place as a result of that work.

The film is long and you should wait until you have enough time to sit down and watch it through to the end because once you begin you will have difficulty turning it off.

Get Shorty
(1995)

Boring violent criminal movie
I'm not sure who decided criminals and their deviant lives are entertaining but this movie has a lot of both. Travolta plays the cool 'shylock' a criminal loan shark who works for some mafia type criminals in Miami. There are some of the usual tough guy threats, beatings and shootings *yawn*. Travolta, as Chili Palmer, flies across the country to track down some guy and somehow ends up in LA with movie director Gene Hackman who's involved with some criminal types - drug dealers - who do some violent things and shoot some people. Travolta out-toughs them by doing some violent things, then his boss shows up and puts the director in the hospital after killing one of the bad drug dealer guys. In short, it's a pretty sick film.

There are a few funny lines. Travolta says "look at me" about 50 times. and then the other characters start imitating him *yawn*. The plot is pretty thin, but in the end the bad guys get killed or arrested and the good guy - Chili - gets the girl and gets to make his movie.

Nick of Time
(1995)

Implausible and illogical
While not the worst film I've ever seen, the plot of "Nick of Time" is annoying in its lack of logic. If you want to assassinate someone at a large public gathering you don't just drag someone in off the street. You get a professional who is prepared. Then, if you are threatening them, you don't hand them a loaded gun. Why doesn't Depp {as Watson} blow off Walken's {as Smith} head at his first chance? Or say something out loud when he is in the elevator with the governor and Walken? Also, if the governor's campaign team are so intent on her not being governor why not just resign from her re-election team en masse? The movie just doesn't make sense. But, if you don't think to much about these questions, the film is mildly entertaining and thrilling.
