High Life
(2018)

No fun at all
I see a lot of movies. Way too many movies. So I've obviously seen some horrible stuff. This isn't the worst, but it's pretty close.

There's no rhyme or reason to the entire movie. The lead (Pattinson's Monte) is an unlikeable character that lacks credibility as an actual person that could exist anywhere. His redeeming trait is that he doesn't want anything from anyone. He mostly mutters to the audience and punches other characters in the face when he's not caring for a baby.

The lead antagonist is an even more convoluted character. She's a criminal? scientist? Sex freak? In charge of the mission? She collects sperm and is for some never explained reason trying to make a radiation proof baby. I think they tried to make her sexy, but it just comes off as disgusting.

If you're looking for a super slow flick with a wailing baby and a muddled story line with no payoff at the end, then you should give the High Life a watch. Otherwise, you're better off drinking a High Life and playing on your phone.

T2 Trainspotting
(2017)

Seriously?
What's up with all the rave reviews?

Look, it's not the worst movie ever made, but it's one of the most pointless. The first was a force of nature that gripped you from the beginning and took you on an adventure in a world foreign to most of us. And it was hilarious, filled with unforgettable scenes and belly laughs. This sequel is a nostalgic, where are they know, look back at the main characters from the original.

It starts out choppy, never picks up a real driving force, and kind of meanders around until it finds a way to end. Begbie is supposed to be the villain that makes this thing move, but the rest of the crew aren't stupid kids anymore, and the fear he instills in the other characters just doesn't seem genuine. The Veronika character seems so forced. There's no groundwork laid to set up her relationship with Sick Boy or Renton. Her character is just too wise and put together to be a hooker hanging out with this sad lot of old junkies.

Trainspotting had a compelling dynamic based on doomed friendships of young junkies, and the attempt to escape the impending doom by the protagonist. There was a force driving the movie from start to end. And there were non-stop laughs along the way mixed in with junkie philosophy and trippy drug-fueled scenes. That's all missing in this sad sequel, which walks in the footsteps of its predecessor, half-heartedly mimicking it. I wish I had just watched the first one again instead.

Song to Song
(2017)

Two Hours and Nine Minutes of Boredom
I'll start with the pros: It's a visually pleasing film. It does a nice job of showing some of the beauty of Austin and the area around it. There are a lot of talented and attractive people in the movie.

But it's a total failure. Despite the non-stop narration, it's still a confusing mess of a film. There's zero emotional attachment to any of the characters. They just kind of float through the film without any purpose. There's no story, no tension, no emotion, and no reason to care about what any of these characters do.

** SPOILER** Even when one of the supporting characters kills herself, what you would imagine would be a large moment in a film where nothing really happens, it's handled matter-of-factly in less than a minute of screen time.

If Malick is trying to say anything in this film, it's that he's rich, pampered, and bored out of his mind.

Under the Skin
(2013)

Disappointing
***Spoiler Alert -- There are Spoilers in this Review***

I just saw this movie, and I was disappointed. I'm pretty open to almost any kind of movie, but this one didn't win me over.

(1) In every movie, I need to care for at least one of the characters in order to lose myself in it. Here, there wasn't a single character that made me care. The lead alien was basically the only character in the movie, and she wasn't all that interesting. I felt no loss when she died. I was never able to lose myself in this movie. I was constantly aware that I was at the theater watching some weird movie.

(2) This movie is style over substance. The story is shallow and confused and moves at an almost painfully slow pace. I found myself begging for it to move on to something other than the seduction/termination process, and when it did, it actually got worse.

(3) The supporting characters are completely undeveloped. The guy that takes the broken alien home and then nurtures her before having sex with her is harder to buy into than the alien. I have no idea what the guy on the motorcycle is, and I never really had a reason to care. The targets may have been the most interesting characters in the movie, but they were basically meat being fed to the grinder.

(4) I've never found Scarlett Johansson less sexy. In that sense, I guess the people that made this movie accomplished something that's not easy to do. She was much sexier in Her when she never showed her face.

(5) You need to take the good pills or smoke the good stuff before you see this one. Otherwise, you'll probably spend a good bit of it checking your phone.
