Across the Universe
(2007)

Best film of 2007
Though still unreleased in the Netherlands, I was fortunate to see it at a special screening of Oscar nominated movies. This was the only film shown for which the audience actually applauded at the end. Yes, it's that good.

Creating a story which encompasses the gamut of '60s era experiences, the film uses 32 Beatles songs to tell its story. At once a moving love story and a stunning exploration of the counter culture emerging in reaction to the Vietnam war, the film grabs from the beginning and doesn't release you until the last credits have rolled off the screen.

I saw every major film last year, and was one of the few who thought 2007a weak year. So many of the film released left me both disillusioned and depressed at the state of the world. This one gave me hope....hope not only that the world can actually be a place of beauty, but also hope that film is not a dying art. I was totally engaged throughout the movie, and didn't want it to end.

I am amazed that it is already out on DVD in America, and am ordering it today. I rarely buy a movie, but want this for my permanent collection, and want to support director Julie Taymor in her career. This movie is a keeper, and I hope more people see it.

Cane
(2007)

"Sugar is the new oil"
I was excited about this show from the first time I read about it, and was afraid it wouldn't live up to my expectations. It has, and then some.

This is a throwback to the days of the great soaps of the 80s, Dallas or Dynasty. A big, rich family feuding with an equally rich rival family, with assorted romantic problems and family rivalries thrown in for good measure.

The acting is uniformly excellent, and all the performers are appealing. A real standout is Nestor Carbonell, who has got to be one of the sexiest men on television. It's also great to see Rita Moreno in a role worthy of her.

I read that this show is not doing well in the ratings, and I hope it survives to become an established hit. It's rare for me to get into a weekly show, and this one I make a point of watching. I haven't missed an episode yet, and I don't plan on it.

Plane Dead
(2007)

Plane Ride From Hell
I thoroughly enjoyed this silly little zombie movie. While it adds nothing to the genre, and violates canon in the process, it passes the time nicely and makes a wonderful companion feature to Snakes On A Plane.

One of the irritating things about this was its grim predictability. It was easy to tell within the first ten minutes who would live and die. I was also disappointed that there was so little gore-- a lot of spurting jugular arteries from horrid bites to the neck, but only one person had their legs ripped off and nobody had their intestines eaten. For those of us who thrive on pictures of this genre, that was a letdown.

As stated in the lead paragraph, this also violated Zombie canon. Some zombies died from a few shots to the stomach (and testicles), others only died when shot in the head. These also belong to the "fast school" of running (and high jumping) zombies.

Leave your disbelief at the door, because there is very little logic to the film. Several zombies are killed by an emergency exit being opened in mid-flight, something that is impossible to accomplish, due to pressurization.

All that said, I still enjoyed this a lot, and would watch it again on a rainy Saturday afternoon if I had nothing new to watch. 6 out of 10.

Prison of Secrets
(1997)

A cautionary tale, badly acted, written and directed.
A selfish, stupid woman engages in white collar crime, and goes to prison for her misdeed. I say stupid, because she could have paid a modest fine and gotten away with her crime, but chose instead to gamble with her and her family's future by trusting her lot to a jury of her peers. They judged her as harshly as I did.

Once in prison, she is exposed to life's realities, possibly for the first time in her wretched existence. Seeing various and sundry sordid occurrences beyond her middle class ken, she decides to meddle in the affairs of others (possibly motivated by petty jealousy, since she seems to be the only one not getting any drugs or sex from the handsome male prison guards).

To make a long story short, her rabble rousing is eventually heard in Washingtonm D.C., a senator takes more than a passing interest in her, and her sentence is commuted to a home curfew. I guess the moral of the story is white collar criminals are better suited to country club prisons.

If you have nothing whatsoever to do, your DVD player is broken, and you don't feel like cleaning the oven, this movie might possibly entertain. Otherwise avoid at all costs.

Last Summer
(1969)

Barbara Hershey Seagull
To the poster who asked if her name change to Seagull had anything to do with the film, the answer is yes.

While filming one of the scenes with the bird, it was accidentally killed. She was so moved ( or guilt ridden) by it that she changed her name to Seagull to memorialize it. I read this in an biography of her years ago.

Seems vaguely stuntish, but it was the 60s, after all. One thing that always interested me was that her career stalled for years, and it wasn't until after she changed her name back to Hershy that she got more roles and respect. Kind of like Dionne Warwick/Warwicke.
