Saturday Night Live: Ralph Nader/George Benson
(1977)
Episode 11, Season 2

A great episode and a sign of things to come
This episode may have been the first sign that this show could be evergreen. Chevy Chase had left the show a few episodes back and John Belushi had to miss this episode due to a leg injury which wasn't even mentioned until Weekend Update. But a fresh mustachioed face joined the show. His name was Billy Murray.

Bill Murray had already been in two sketches by the time Weekend Update rolled around, but was not included in the credits. The show, for the first time of many years to come, utilized the weekly fake news segment as an introduction to a new cast member. Jane Curtin continued to struggle as Weekend Update host, but muddled through.

In addition, we were introduced to of Saturday Night's first recurring sketches, The Coneheads. Andy Kaufman debuted his Elvis impersonation. George Benson wowed with two fantastic songs (and appeared as a pastor in Bill Murray's first sketch).

On top of all of that, Ralph Nader proved to be a surprisingly apt host. It's a shame the show didn't trust him to play more characters instead of just playing himself.

This episode really felt like the first time Gilda Radner truly got to shine. The weekly Gary Weis film is probably the best he ever did.

All in all, this was a fantastic episode and a sign of things to come.

Make Me Scream
(2023)

A fun way to spend an hour
Spooky season is upon us and I love reality shows that celebrate it. Unlike shows such as "The Great Halloween Fright Fight" or "Halloween Wars", "Make Me Scream" is just a one off special.

There's not much to the show; it's just three celebrities and their friends in pairs of two going through haunted house scares and solving puzzles. Much like MTV's "Silent Library" before it, "Make Me Scream" bases the success of the pairs on a decibel reading scream meter. But hosts Tempest Bledsoe and Darryl Bell also take points off if they run, hide, or close their eyes.

It was fun to see our old TV friends Tempest and Darryl (who both simply do not age) along with Jaleel White. The Cosby Show, A Different World, and Family Matters all on one show? Sign me up!

It's a fun way to spend (less than) an hour and if your kids are old enough, they'll love it too.

Newhart: It Happened One Afternoon: Part 1
(1983)
Episode 1, Season 2

A remarkably unfunny and poorly written episode
For a season premiere in which the producers obviously wanted to re-tool things-the set has changed with new furniture and wall hangings, Julia Duffy replaces Jennifer Holmes, the lighting is much brighter-the episode is remarkably unfunny.

The studio audience had such low energy you forget they're there much of the time. Did they not have a warmup comic? One wonders why they didn't cut and re-write on the day of the shoot when the jokes fell so flat there was absolutely zero laughter.

Stephanie is annoying. Dick's agent is as well, but he's at least amusing. Bob Newhart even seems to struggle with timing (a true rarity) because he seems to be holding for laughter that wasn't there.

It's the worst episode of the show thus far. All uphill from here.

The Golden Girls: Empty Nests
(1987)
Episode 26, Season 2

A Terrible Backdoor Pilot
Sometimes backdoor pilots work, like Facts of Life coming from Diff'rent Strokes. Other times, Rita Moreno shows up out of nowhere and we're just supposed to suspend disbelief that Golden Girls' producers figured we wouldn't care after two full seasons that the ladies have neighbors they'd never had before.

I can't believe NBC allowed this to be the finale to an otherwise wonderful season of this classic series! Rita Moreno even said this episode/pilot was a "very, very bad show."

I'm still trying to figure out how this backdoor pilot morphed into Empty Nest, the beloved Golden Girls spin-off that lasted seven seasons! The only things that carried over from this episode were the house (why bother paying for a new set?) and David Leisure (who would end up playing a different smarmy, but slightly more likable character).

Thank God this show didn't make it because the actual Empty Nest was a great show.

Space Jam: A New Legacy
(2021)

GREAT and hilarious family movie
I'm very surprised by all the hate on IMDb. I watched this back to back with the original with my 14 and 10 year old boys. Not only do I disagree with all the sentiment that this is not as good as the original, I think it's better. Maybe all the haters should go back and watch the original again.

A New Legacy is a movie, first and foremost, about family - and a beautiful one at that. But it's also absolutely hilarious at times, and unlike so many movies these days (ESPECIALLY family movies), it's continually surprising.

I particularly loved all of the cameos in the crowd at the basketball game. Who would've ever thought Hanna Barbera characters would stand shoulder to shoulder with characters from The Matrix, Gremlins, Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, LOTR, GOT, and the DC Universe? And Lil Rel, naturally.

If you're looking for a fun movie to watch with your kids, you really can't go wrong here.

Corner Gas Animated: Spy Me to the Moon
(2018)
Episode 9, Season 1

Annoying if you've seen the Corner Gas movie
This is a fine episode, but the will they/won't they storyline about Lacey and Brent being on a "friend date" is annoying if you've seen the movie. Are we supposed to pretend the movie didn't end with the revelation that Brent and Lacey had been dating in the years between the original series ending and the movie? Does the animated series take place in between episodes from the live action series? Continuity matters.

Tumbledown
(2015)

Great movie that needed a better ending
Without spoiling the ending... well, the ending is right on the poster, but without ruining it, I would say this movie was wonderful until the ideas ran out and they decided to close it with a rom-com ending. The cast is wonderful and it's still worth the time, but a much better movie about someone obsessed with a musician's one perfect album musician is "Juliet, Naked".

The Andy Griffith Show: The Return of Malcolm Merriweather
(1964)
Episode 28, Season 4

Silly in the wrong way
I don't know why the writers so often thought they had to resolve things with characters lying to get out of situations. Malcolm could've simply gone to Andy to say he was concerned about Bea or simply to say it was time to move on so he could explore more of America. Instead, he pretended to be drunk so he could get fired. It just didn't make any sense. And as another reviewer noted, the show has told this story before anyway.

Chad
(2021)

A Genuinely Funny Coming of Age Show
I feel like people are missing the point of the show with these negative reviews. Forget that Nasim Pedrad is a woman, she's playing the part of an awkward teenage boy and she's playing him to great effect. Imagine Pen15 meets Napoleon Dynamite in a sort of Portlandian world and that's kind of what's going on here. Chad is certainly a cringey character, if not somewhat unlikeable, as the show begins, but the show is heartfelt and it's obvious there will be growth in him throughout the series.

It almost feels as if many of the people writing bad reviews would have better received it if it had been an animated series. I have a feeling this will be worth the ride.

Like many of their TBS comedies, this show may take some time to find its audience. I hope it does though.

Actual critics love it and it has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Do I actually think this is a ten star show from the first two episodes, no. But all these 1 star reviews need to be balanced out. It's a laugh out loud funny show you should give a chance.
