The Ending
The so-called brilliant twist or surprise ending was not much of a twist or even a surprise in my opinion. (Spoiler warning) There is a moment towards the end of the film which refers to G.P.'s character . . . it slows down the scene that is happening at the time, it is horribly timed and out of place, and there is simply no reason for it . . . except for one thing : to hint that something is going to happen to G.P's character. Only, it is so out of place that it is not a hint, it is a misplaced scream, and considering everything that has already taken place and the sins that are left, you have a definite idea of what is going to happen. The movie would have been better by leaving this moment out. The only surprise for me (BIG Spoiler warning) was it seeming to be the head as opposed to the baby/fetus in the box. Personally, I think the idea of it being the baby is better than the head because it emphasizes both their deaths more so and it is sicker. And "sick" seems to be what they were going for for most of the film. Anyhow, overall, it's an okay movie. But the ending to me just doesn't come anywhere at all close to living up to the hype. It wasn't a twist or a surprise, it was just "the end" . . .

The Failures
(2003)

Humorous & Touching
Initially, I wasn't sure I'd like the film based on the plot/subject... It sounded mean-spirited. But it actually was humorous and touching.

I thought the film did I good job balancing the amount of light sarcastic humor with darker suicidal talk. It wasn't too heavy, nor too light. It could have been deeper, but the fact it wasn't, isn't a complaint ... The film works well as it is.

Another movie at the theaters now (2004) that also revolves around suicide is Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself. Both contain drama & humor. However, while I would consider Wilbur to on the drama side (deep), I'd consider Failures more on the humor side (light).

I also enjoyed most of the various characters in the movie. And I was especially impressed with J. Johnson.

It's well-acted, well-written, and worth seeing.

Break a Leg
(2005)

Totally Baffled?!? The Worst!
This was the worst movie I saw at WorldFest and it also received the least amount of applause afterwards! I can only think it is receiving such recognition based on the amount of known actors in the film. It's great to see J.Beals but she's only in the movie for a few minutes. M.Parker is a much better actress than the part allowed for. The rest of the acting is hard to judge because the movie is so ridiculous and predictable. The main character is totally unsympathetic and therefore a bore to watch. There is no real emotional depth to the story. A movie revolving about an actor who can't get work doesn't feel very original to me. Nor does the development of the cop. It feels like one of many straight-to-video movies I saw back in the 90s ... And not even a good one in those standards.
