Coming 2 America
(2021)

Unnecessary Sequel
The original film was good. The plot was simple, and it was centered on Akeem and his aide trying to fit-in. The old film also did a good job in portraying Akeem as an intelligent and purpose-driven individual despite his naivety. Zamunda was also portrayed in a classy way, and Africa was given a fitting homage in Coming to America (1988).

This sequel does not do the original any service. There are too many unnecessary characters, many dance routines some of which mock the African culture, the comedy is flat, and the CGI was just atrocious..... The only watchable scenes in this film were the barbershop scenes, so that tells you a lot.

I love Eddie Murphy but overall this movie is very very very disappointing. It felt like a mash-up of different ideas hurriedly put together into one movie. If a film is a classic, leave it alone.

Once Were Warriors
(1994)

Well executed, touching story, A+
I saw this movie as a kid back in the 90s. I remember sitting next to my aunt who was in tears for parts of the movie. The film gives a great account of domestic violence; we get to experience how volatile stability in a family is, and how quick things can turn for the worst.

Rena Owen is brilliant and gives an Oscar-worthy performance. She really digs deep and serves as the heart of the film. The emotional roller-coaster the viewer experiences is through her brilliant acting. I think Hollywood should have tapped more into her talent. Temuera Morrison is also brilliant, and the scene in the end with Uncle Bully was gut-wrenching.

Overall; great acting, fine directing, simple story and a decent depiction of Maori culture. "Once Were Warriors" is highly recommended.

Child's Play
(2019)

Okay.... Just....
What are the rules for a reboot? What if the original is a cult classic? Should any important aspect of the movie be changed?

This movie misses one important aspect, which is Charles Lee Ray. Thus for the entire duration of the film I was critical. The doll also lacks the jovial-menacing Chucky look that we were used to and thus isn't as scary as the original.

Other than that the movie is watchable. Viewers should have an open mind and treat the movie as a stand-alone film, and not as part of the franchise. Or else you'll end up hating it.

The Predator
(2018)

Evolutionary what now?
The original movie was simple, an alien killing soldiers in the jungle for sport.

This movie tries to combine several plots together. We have a mad scientist/soldier, a "fugitive" plot where a predator is escaping and there is another predator chasing him down, a bunch of misfit soldiers (one too many by the way), an experiment of some sorts near a waterfall-underground-secret-lab setting and....get this....a smart kid who can decode alien technology..... Did I miss something? Yes, the kid is like some kind of improvement on our current crop of human species....

The movie gets a decent rating out of respect for the actors involved, who have done some decent work in the past. The special effects are also better than the original 80s movie, of course. Otherwise the movie should have been better.

Think Like a Man
(2012)

Predicable but well executed.
There are ups and downs to this flick. The story is interesting and unique. The cast is beautiful, the emotions are spot-on all through the film. Another plus is the humor. Every character has a situation that we can all relate to. A momma's boy, a player, a divorcée... All characters that we have interacted with at one point.

Kevin Hart does an exceptional job and he stands above the rest of the cast. The downer is the last quarter of the movie. It gets too sappy for a dude. The resolutions of the relationships become way too predictable. I mean, it's predictable down to the actual words spoken by the couples.

That aside, this is a movie suitable for a night in with your girl, or a date. It will set your chic in the mood :-) A better than average movie, and still worth your money.

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation
(2004)

Injustice done to the original
I went to see the movie with high expectations. The first Starship Troopers movie is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is a let-down in all aspects: the story is predictable and deviates from the original, the acting is awful and there are no special effects to be honest. It seems as though the studio had 7 million dollars that needed to be burnt. In my opinion, the franchise should focus on a man vs alien-bug storyline. The movie seems as though they were trying to mimic "Species" while trying to retain the Starship Troopers title. Thus including a host of unnecessary sex scenes. I do not know how the laws concerning movies work, but I think Paul Verhoeven should sue whoever decided to make this piece of crap. If you value your money and time, do not subject yourself to the agony of sitting through this movie.
