Love Hina Again
(2002)

excellent ending to the series
Keitarou leaves again with Seta for another archaeological dig. This time, we don't join him on this adventure. (Don't worry, we'll see Keitarou again later). Instead, we begin with the drama back at Hina household. We're introduced to a mysterious new girl with a pet cat that flies and talks. Who is this new girl, and why is she causing so much trouble? The drama also continues with poor Naru. Is she ready to confess her TRUE feelings? All shall be revealed in "Love Hina Again."

This movie was my favorite of the series and 2 Love Hina specials. There's great character development and plot twists. Also, if you found the series risqué, wait until you see "Again." There's even more brief nudity and sexual innuendos.

overall: an excellent ending to the series 9/10

recommend if: *you're a fan of the Love Hina series *you love anime/animation

avoid if: *you haven't seen the series and the 2 specials (refrences are made to both) *you're offended by animated nudity *you're offended by sexual innuendos.

Love Hina Spring Special
(2001)

funny and cute
Believeing he flunked the Tokyo U entrance exams for a 4th time, Keitarou runs away with Seta to one of his archaeological digs. This dig takes place on an island overrun by...you guessed it: turtles. Meanwhile, back at the Hina household, the girls feel worried about their manager and decide to go look for him. This special focuses on promises and being able to keep them.

This is another very enjoyable special from the Love Hina series. Like the series, expect lots of laughs and soap opera like drama. Must see for all Love Hina fans

overall: full of cuteness and laughter: 8/10

recommend if: *you're a fan of the Love Hina series *you love anime/animation

avoid if: *you haven't watched/finished watching the Love Hina series

Mulan II
(2004)

should have been left alone
Why does Disney insist on making unnecessary sequels to everything?

All the characters are back. Mulan and Shang are now engaged. As they begin to plan their wedding, they're sent off on a mission from the Emporer to help transport his 3 daughters to their arranged marriage. Meanwhile, Mushu tries to split up our happy couple.

Fortunitely, this sequel doesn't ruin the first one. Mulan is still strong willed and free thinking. Mushu still brings the comic relief. The new songs are mediocre. this movie was still a waste of time and should have been left alone.

Overall, not horrible, but not worth the time either 4/10

recommend if: *you need something to entertain the kids

avoid if: *the first Mulan is in stock

Shark Tale
(2004)

cute, but lacking heart
A little fish named Oscar (voice by Smith) feels like a nobody and wishes to be "somebody". He works at the "whale wash" and wishes to achieve better. Lenny (voiced by Black) a charismatic, vegetarian shark runs (er, swims) away from his mafia like shark family after his brother dies. A strange turn events leaves the other fish thinking Oscar killed a shark. He goes along with the story and is labeled "The Shark Slayer". Oscar and Lenny meet up and agree to help each other out.

First, it's important for the viewer NOT to compare this movie to Finding Nemo. Compared to Finding Nemo, this movie is awful. However, on its own, it's enjoyable. The animation and funny characters will have kids entertained, and the constant movie and pop culture references will have adults entertained. Still, it's not the best animated film from Dreamworks. It lacks the heart that Shrek has, and it's not smart like Antz is.

Overall, cute, but mediocre. 5/10

recommended if: *you need something to entertain the kids *you like animation

avoid if: *Shrek 2 is in stock

Saw
(2004)

overflowing with plot holes
Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Elwes) are two men who wake up in a trap set up by a serial killer named "Jigsaw." Jigsaw chooses victims who "don't count their blessings" such as self-injurers and drug addicts. He puts them in situations where they are forced to find a way out or they die. Adam and Gordon must find a way out before they become victims themselves.

This movie is disturbing beyond belief. Actually, this movie could potentially be very good because the concept is pretty original. There's also some great transitions, such as the ending (not giving anything away). A man is heard screaming and it fades into Fear Factory's song "Bite the hand that Bleeds". However, this film is filled with dumb characters and plot holes. The movie tries to leave you feeling scared, but instead, it only fills you with questions.

Overall, scary but far too many plot holes. 3/10

recommend if: *you want something scary/disturbing *you like slasher films

avoid if: *you're offended by blood, gore, and graphic violence *you're offended by foul language *you hate plot holes and characters that don't think

Constantine
(2005)

hot and action packed
First, keep in mind, this review is coming from someone who never read the Hellblazer comic book series.

Keanu Reeves plays John Constantine, a chain smoking exorcist who's trying to buy his way into heaven with his work. Not only can he exorcise demons, he can also travel to Hell and back. He meets a woman named Angela Dodson(Weisz) who's convinced her twin sister's death wasn't a suicide. She turns to Constantine for help.

This movie is a fun ride right from the start. It has great special effects, fun action sequences, and some sweet weapons for destroying demons. Unlike most others, I was pleased with Reeves's performance in this film. He plays the bad-ass characters well. Weisz is also excellent in her role. The only downside is some of the plot holes. We learn in the film of half-breeds that live on earth (some people are half-demon or half-angel). We also learn that hell has its own version of the bible. The things like this I wish the film would have given us more information on. For people who know their bible well, this movie will be especially frustrating.

Overall, I found this movie very enjoyable. I hope there will be a director's cut when the movie comes out on DVD. 8/10

Recommend if: *you like action *you like movies that involve spiritual warfare

Avoid if: *you don't like to see graphic violence with blood *you're offended by strong language

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
(2004)

a new stoner classic
The plot is simply this: Harold (Cho) and Kumar (Penn) get stoned and get the munchies, specifically for White Castle burgers. Along the way they have some strange encounters.

This movie is hilarious and does an awesome job at poking fun at Asian and Arabic stereotypes. Some of the humor is pretty crude, but nothing too offensive. (and nothing we haven't seen in a teen gross out comedy before). It's sure to become a stoner classic.

Overall, hilarious movie and a great hour and 28 minute commercial for White Castle 8/10

recommend if: *you like stoner comedies such as "Half Baked" *you like teen gross out comedies

avoid if: *you're offended by bathroom humor *you're offended by foul language

Kaena: La prophétie
(2003)

a fun fantasy ride!
Kaena is a fun fantasy ride through gorgeous cgi animation

The movie takes place in a planet (or plant i should say) called Axis. The people of Axis live their lives according to the "Gods". The movie centers around a teenage outcast named Kaena. Kaena is an explorer and dreamer who believes greater things exist outside the small land of Axis. As the resources of the land start to drain out, the Gods become angrier and more demanding. Kaena, doubting the existence of the Gods, is sent away. On her journey, she searches for the answers she's always dreamed of. Maybe there is life out there in the "great oblivion"...

I'm really not sure why this movie received such bad reviews. It may not be the most complex story in the world, but it's still enough to capture the viewer's interest. It also has surprising good voice acting performed by Kirsten Dunst (who voices Kaena) and the late Richard Hariss. Even Greg Proops makes a decent comedic performance as a worm. Not to mention, the animation is spectacular, especially the scenery. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie.

Recommend if: *you enjoy anime/animation *you like fantasy/science fiction

Avoid if: *you have younger children (they may find some of the creatures scary)

Garden State
(2004)

one of the best of 2004
Garden State is the story of a young man named Andrew Largeman (Zack Braff) returning to his home state after his mother dies. Largeman is a character who's numb to everyone and everything around him. He experiences no emotion and appears very one-dimensional in the beginning of the movie. All of this changes when he meets a young woman named Sam (Natlie Portman). The movie progresses into a beautiful story about life, emotion, and love.

Everything about this movie was wonderfully done. Wonderful story. Wonderful Acting, editing, direction, etc. There's not much more I can say because this one is a must see. So stop reading and go watch Garden State!

Recommend if: *you want a good story about life *you want to see one of the best of 2004 *you enjoy a good love story

Avoid if: *you're offended by bad language, nudity, and drug use

Kôkaku kidôtai
(1995)

one of the best
There's not enough words to describe how excellent this anime classic is.

In future, cops are cyborgs. The cyborgs are robots, but have human personality. They all have "ghost" or soul that gives them a human connection. (Hence the name "Ghost in the Shell"). The film focuses on a cyborg named Motoko Kusanagi. Motoko is a cop with ability's similar to Trinity from The Matrix. She also has the ability to go invisible after stripping off her clothes.

The cops are after a hacker called "The Puppet Master." The Puppet Master has been hacking into the minds of humans. It's up to Motoko and the cops to capture this hacker.

During the search, Motoko begins to question herself and her origin. I almost with the movie would have focused more on this because I was feeling curious myself.

Overall, an excellent anime with great action, philosophy, and spectacular animation.

I recommend this movie if: *you like anime/animation *you like The Matrix *you like philosophy, action, and science fiction *you want a complicated and sophisticated storyline

avoid if: *you're offended/disgusted by graphic violence and blood

Envy
(2004)

one of the worst
Envy stars some of the best. Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Amy Poehler, and the great Christopher Walken. With such a cast, one can only expect the best. However, with "Envy", no one could save this disaster.

Tim Dingman (Stiller) and Nick Vanderpark (Black) are best friends and co-workers at a sandpaper factory. Both are making a decent living, but because Tim has a better performance at work, he's able to afford more than his buddy Nick. Nick is a dreamer who's always coming up with new ideas for inventions. One day, Nick comes up with the idea for a spray can that makes dog poop disappear (Yes, I'm serious). Falling in love with the idea, Nick decides to really invent this product. He makes an offer to Tim to invest in his idea and share the profits 50/50. Tim refuses thinking the idea will never work.

Nick's invention, titled "va-poo-rize" (again, i'm serious), ends up making millions. He enjoys spending his money on things like a much larger house, a horse, a personal trainer, and fancy deserts. Tim starts feeling envy for Nick. Hence the name of the movie.

The concept isn't bad, but it still turns out awful. This movie contains some of the worst dialog and very poor performances from all the cast. Then again, as I mentioned earlier, none of them could save this mess. Not even the great Christoper Walken, playing a homeless character named "J-man", made this movie funny. The movie is bad from the start and only continues to get worse.

I recommend this movie if: *you like crap (no pun intended) *you want to see Jack Black in a white tux

I say, avoid this movie at all costs, but avoid ESPECIALLY if: *you're offended by bathroom humor *you love animals

Meet the Fockers
(2004)

better than the first
The sequel to the ever popular "Meet the Parents." I should probably mention that I'm not a fan of the first movie. I can't take humiliation comedy, and I only felt sympathy for poor George Focker (Stiller). Can we give the poor guy a break already? Nope. We're gonna make a sequel about his embarrassing parents.

At the beginning of the movie we learn George and Pam (Polo) are planning their wedding. Now all that has to happen: Pam's parents, Jack (De Niro) and Dina (Danner), have to meet George's parents, Bernie (Hoffman) and Roz (Streisand). The movie ensues with more humiliation comedy put on poor George. However, the sequel actually has some heart.

The Focker family made this movie really enjoyable for me. Streisand and Hoffman's characters were so charming. It's not that they intentionally wish to embarrass their son, they just REALLY love him. One of the jokes in the movie includes the parents "shrine" dedicated to their son's "achievements." This includes "9th place ribbons" and a trophy that reads "world's greatest male nurse." Bernie and Roz are the type of couple that are out there but see themselves as normal. Everyone else around them is just closed in and not in touch with their feelings. Now combine these two with De Niro's character. Instant laughs.

Overall, I enjoyed "Meet the Fockers" much more than "Meet the Parents." I'm still not a big fan of humiliation comedy, but I still found myself enjoying this one. Therefore, I feel good giving this one my recommendation
