I've read the best books written on Semmelweis and watched several films on his life and work. This is easily the best. Robert Lang does a fine job as Semmelweis. The writing, direction and camera work is very well done. The final part, after he finishes writing his etiology, it's rejection, his reaction and ultimate mental breakdown are, however, dealt with much too quickly. The greatest focus is on his discovery, but there should be equal focus on the rigid, antediluvian thinking, which permeated the medical profession then and still does to this day.
