The Relic
(1997)

OK movie but I would like to see another adaptation
This is a movie that really sold out to brainless audiences. I read this book when it first came out and had seen the original posters at me nearby theater more than A YEAR before it actually came out. When it did come out the old posters ( a Gothic type museum exterior in dark blue/green/ and with red blood down the entrance with the black shades seemingly making an unrecognizable ape like face) had been terminated and the new advertisements (the red and black guy screaming posters) had replaced it.

That sums it up right there. During the making of the film apparently the Producers felt the original creature from the book was too damn small. Of course it didn't occur to them that the 2 story tall beast they created couldn't fit in a public washroom where apparently it gets most of it's joy. Vaseline perhaps included? must be able to shrink.

One of the reasons i liked the book was that it used a hunters mind from all points and perspectives. The creature from the book was built to kill and destroy. It was built efficiently with no dead weight. Something living on a small amount of brain tissue ...well you think about it... what do junkies look like? I felt the book was very realistic. the animal is a junkie, it doesn't eat whales. The animal is supposed to be of Raptor height so it can get you in a closet and be efficient in build, speed, and energy.

I don't know if LC and DP were happy about the adaptation of the book (no pun intended). I certainly was not. They cut out some of the best scenes and Da GOsta was cut from the movie --- his name is used in the movie but the character is in fact Pendergasts and not the fat sarcastic buffoon who wanted to pi**ss on all authority a-holes. I missed having the two characters together and their camaraderie. I thought their partnership was key in the book.

THey (film) made a mockery of the exhibit chase in the dark... which in the book i found the most intense part. They did not do justice to the swat team involvement... instead they just made the creature the size of the entire museum hall (which had skinny hallways leading to it---apparently it does some sort of star Trekky "beaming" to get from room to room -- otherwise the physics are impossible). The final sewer chase was laughable because of the assumption the creature had shrunk yet again to conveniently fit in that small space. I didn't like the ending either ... since i felt the entire book...as i said above... came from a hunters mind ... i felt the ending in the book kept to this but the movie went for THE CHEESIEST LINE EVER!!! and fireworks which weren't even decent.

I have been hoping the Porduction company does not own open rights to the book but payed royalties to use it . That would keep new adaptations possible. Id prefer the writers staying true to their vision next time and showing some integrity. They could have made a classic if they had had some balls and kept to it.

To those who thought dumbing it up and selling out to the cheese puffs i repeat the cheesiest line ever "GO TO HE**"

(2003)

Step off the stage and shut up
Get a life... stop pretending to be smart people. Stop pretending that this comedy was disappointing. If You are saying this comedy was disappointing and was dumb than you are really showing Your intelligence level. Did You think this movie was going to reveal the secrets of existence? Did You possibly believe it would hint at the meaning of life and some dogma idea? Did You believe You would actually be able to look deep into this film and find a message through the composition and juxtaposition of shots? If You did you have shown your mom should be choosing your movies. this is a movie you can watch when you get off your high horse and chill with friends (im assuming you have) and all those chickys we like to meet up with on our days off (im assuming you have). The characters are all general so we can laugh at similar situations we have had either through friends or ourselves... assuming we have all experienced life and not been shut ins. NOT A GOOD FILM but not a bad FLICK for something to play when you need a laugh with friends... or need to play something in the background during a party of 30-40 people so you can look aside and catch something funny throughout the night. For people who are like the lead character and have friends ---women and male--- they chill with. For loners that film will have no impact whatsoever... for those with friends and who like to have a good time, aren't shut-ins, this movie simply reminds you of antics here and there.

Frankly i thought it was fine... i certainly don't need to pretend that it insulted my intelligence because having intelligence i knew it was going to be void of, earth shattering, meaning.

Dawn of the Dead
(2004)

Good but Boyle still rules
I have to first admit that i have a bias, since i feel that 28 days later is one of the best FILMS i have ever seen (of all genres). I know a lot of horror and zombie movie maniacs didn't enjoy 28dl and some have called it the worst in history. However i felt they were given a wrong impression by the adverts. Dawn of the dead fits the advertisements of 28dl better than 28dl did. 28 days later scared the hell, better put it didn't scare as much as it haunted me, out of me because i am more affected by psychological fears than knee jerking suspense. Thus the use of "deja vu" like editing and shots which were claustrophobic as well as shots off level and through bars gave me a depth of feeling with the plot i had never before experienced (along with all the visual allusions that hit your subconscious).

To my knowledge Zack Snyder has admitted to looking to 28dl(when a hit in UK) and using some of the qualities he liked; faster zombies etc (that haunting shadow shot in the parkade of the infected dead running a mirror image of the hordes in the tunnel in 28dl). I think he made some good decisions of what improvements were made in 28dl to the zombie genre.

I have seen all of the dead series numerous times and have to tell you that, for me, they were never, EVER, scary... being surprised is not being scared. But the zombies were always dumb and slow... so why would i be scared? Some idiot always trips. Am i supposed to be scared for him or her? No. My first reaction for dumb characters is "please eat him already". In the Moron vs. Zombie title fight i always cheer for the zombie; after all its the moron who is wasting my time and aggravating me ... not the zombie. That was the BIG thing i loved about the new zombies... because now characters don't have to be morons to get eaten. The zombies can run after you and chase you down. When You take out the stupid people crutch that the genres of zombie and slasher films lean on the film all of a sudden transcends its genre(since it is now my theory that that moron character is what defines it). Since i had not witnessed moronic choices; other than Polley getting too close to peoples faces when they were infected (must admit i said "eat her" a couple of times and not in the x.x.x kind of way), and that dumb girl going for her dog which the zombies already proved was not going to be hurt anyways; i feel this is no longer a zombie film but should be classified as horror.

I liked the reproduction of one of the eeriest shots in the original... which of course is when (in the original) a man is covered with a blanket when he dies.. and after a couple seconds the blanket gets up. I'm happy they kept that, as it is one of the trade marks from the film... along with cops raiding an apartment complex at the beginning and shooting a guys head clean off as if it were a ripe watermelon(which it may have been).

To put it short... i give the movie/flick (not film) an 8, still some moron moves that make you say "eat her please" but they kept it to one or two. The movie did well to provide better characters and a basic message--obviously same as the first, But nothing touches 28DL for those two areas. I still love the upside down "Hell" shot in 28dl. Oh yeah 28dl is becoming a franchise... lets see if they turn it in to an alien clone that had james cameron and David fincher take the torch or if it becomes like almost every other franchise and falls on its face. Are they re-making all the Remero films? If anyone knows id sure like to hear about it.
