The New Mutants
(2020)

Worse than I expected
I went in with low expectations and yet still left disappointed. I'd like to say something positive but I really can't think of anything right now. The plot, dialogue, characters, acting, cinematography, lighting, everything was just awful.

I don't usually take note of accents in movies, if the characterisations are fine then I usually just gloss over them. It says a lot that even I noticed how bad and inconsistent these were.

The backstories were glossed over and only partially explored for the most part with glaring holes in most of them.

The "hospital" setting was not set up, explained, or even logically consistent. If you don't know who is behind it with a certain name drop, then you won't get any answers here.

Just bad. Bad and a waste of your time. Watch literally anything else. Go for a walk. Play with your dog. Live life. Don't watch this.

Shazam!
(2019)

Meh
Great second act. Worth a watch for that alone but let down by weird tonal shifts throughout 1 + 3. Angsty boy is not the upbeat man at all and feel like two separate characters rather than 2 sides of a whole.

Maybe my expectations were a bit high despite DC's recent history but the drawn out first act made me wish I was in another theatre and the third act cringe was horrible beyond words.

Don't know who the target audience is really. Most of it is aimed at younger audiences but there are some scenes that wouldn't sit well with them.

Tl;dr Go in expecting a bubblegum movie and try not to think about all the obvious plot holes and you'll probably have a decent time.

The Mist
(2017)

Okay, but flawed
A good idea badly implemented. The plot is OK, pacing is fine but the characters...sheesh. Many are over acted and their motivations and reactions are just not consistent within the show or the reality of the situation.

I made it to the end because I wanted to see how it panned out and am glad I did, kinda. It really is equal parts good and cringey.

Not much else to say really. Worth a watch...sort of.

Death Note
(2017)

Avoid
I wanted to like this, I really did. Loved the live action movies and, although I generally don't like anime, really liked the series.

This abomination just wrecked everything. The characters lost all nuance, the plot lost all cohesion, the pacing was all wrong, character arcs non-existent.

The original (either one) was a cat and mouse game of intellectual games and a clash of egos. Every move was well thought out and deliberate. Well worth a watch once you scrub this crap out of your mind.

This takes the core idea of a vastly superior product and turns it into a Michael Bay movie on crack that is so bad it hurts my soul.

Remakes are fine, this type of lowest common denominator tripe is not.

Also, What the hell was that plot thread about the previous owner of the book that went absolutely nowhere? I thought this may extend the lore a little, apparently even that was too much effort.

Verdict: Avoid like the plague it is and watch the live action movies. If you like them, give the anime a try.

2/10 Would not bang -Ign (Trying to regain the humanity this movie stole) :)

The Dirties
(2013)

Average at best. Minor spoilers
Decently done but the movie is all set up and no payoff. Ironically, the last few minutes are the most unbelievable. I can't really recommend it.

Characterisation and cinematography are very well done and the tone of the movie captures the high school project feel. The characters are mostly believable and the progression is realistic.

Maybe it's a personal fault of mine that after all this set up I want the deed done. I want the catharsis and the repercussions. I don't want a movie that is simply a prelude or prequel to the Columbine footage. The movie artfully crafts characters and then abandons them.

TL;DR A long road to nowhere.

The Following
(2013)

love it
I'm still really enjoying the series. Yes, it does have the hokey "people doing really stupid things and get in trouble" and magically appearing characters in places that they shouldn't be or know about. It even has forced plot points on occasion. I simply don't care.

I usually pick these shows apart something fierce but the two main actors do such a brilliant job that it, at least for me, holds together really well.

This show may overstay its welcome but for now it is a really dark drama that holds interest in a sea of mediocre crap.

Dexter is a fluffy bunny next to Joe.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
(2014)

Worth a watch
Rating it a 10 to balance out the really low average. Not that it'll make that much difference but this movie deserves more than a 5.1 as it stands now. It had genuinely creepy moments and some excellent jump scares.

I'd rate it at a solid 8. The acting was very well done as was the framing, sound and plot progression. Sure there was some hokey bits that are found in every horror movie but an overall decent watch.

A 5 for me is when a movie fails to accomplish what it sets out to do or had major flaws. This had none of that and I recommend it to any horror fan or anyone interested in the franchise that may have been turned off the later installments.

Contracted
(2013)

Don't bother. Mild spoilers within.
I'd like to write a detailed review but this movie is really not worth the effort. The characters are, without exception, unsympathetic and most are stupid to the point that they'd probably have to be reminded to breathe. i.e. a doctor diagnosing an obvious blood infection as a rash and prescribing a moisturising cream whilst completely ignoring hemorrhaging, a bloke shagging someone who looks like a corpse. I could go on but I'm making myself sad...

The plot, such as it is, has no real beginning, no suspense, no development, no climax, no finale. The progression of the disease is fairly well implemented but done to a character that after about 5 minutes in, I hated and wanted to die.

As a horror fan, I'm used to watching a lot of crap to get the rare gem. I'm not above polishing a turd to get some enjoyment out of a lemon. I'm not even above mixing my metaphors. This movie is a steaming pile. I watched it so you don't have to.

You're welcome. :)

Rated 4/10 for the special effects only.
