Father Brown
(2013)

Cozy Mystery
I've come to really enjoy this show. The cast has great chemistry and Father Brown couldn't have been casted better.

Star Trek: Discovery
(2017)

Different but the same
There isn't a Star Trek iteration that I don't like. It's complete pseudoscience and has been from the first ever series, but you kind of have to accept that if you want FTL, aliens, a galactic federation and many episodes over many generations.

In that sense, this series is no different to its predecessors. It's full of nonsensical happenings. At the same time, however, this series is unlike any before it, which is perhaps why it has quite a few detractors. Yes, this is diversity heavy. Racial diversity, sexual diversity... every single human is represented in some way, but it's only 'political agenda' is equality, which is pretty much no different to all the Star Trek iterations before it (hence: different but the same).

But what I like about this iteration is that characters seem more human. This, imo, started with Voyager, where human characters actually act like human characters rather than robots trying to imitate human emotion. That is, people cry and laugh and sometimes mess about even when on the job. Given all the pseudoscience people accept, it's really not that hard to imagine slips of professionalism every now and then.

Overall, it's pretty far-fetched and camp (again, like every other iteration before it), but there's something fun about it (like every other iteration before it). And as a white man who's watched every episode to date, I can honestly say that I do not feel positioned as inferior or bumbling because of Michael Burnham.. I mean, I honestly can't believe how triggered some people are in these reviews, not because of poor writing but because of imagined agendas or 'politics' that regards minorities as existing and equal? So, 'equality' bad? Yeah okay, that doesn't jive with the meaning and heart of this franchise whatsoever, but okay. Head on over to PureFlix where a straight white guy will play every protagonist on every show (quite literally).

7/10 - great visuals, a great protagonist and lots of fun in deep space with our different but the same human comrades (aliens too).

Bargain Hunt
(2000)

Underrated by the miserable twerps of IMDB (as per usual)
What a bunch of miserable, cynical twerps in the user reviews. This is a very watchable show hosted by a bunch of wonderful people with an earnest love of antiques.

What I love most about this show is that the items are REAL. If this were American, they'd be finding amazing items and making huge profits. Instead, the contestants often buy junk and make whopping great losses. Love it! No fakery or manufactured drama.

Community: Intro to Felt Surrogacy
(2013)
Episode 9, Season 4

Better the second time 'round
I felt mixed about this episode the first time I saw it. However, I really enjoyed it the second time 'round, especially having binged the whole series. I think I came to appreciate it more as a character development/character bonding episode than a meant-to-be-funny episode. All in all, it feels like a very succinct, purposeful episode with good writing and warm moments that aren't overly saccharine.

Kûtei Doragonzu
(2020)

Visually stunning, but lacks plot
Ideology/propaganda controversy aside, this show doesn't have much to offer in terms of plot or action. Arguably a great premise and setting, this show fails to imbue a sense of 'adventure'. I was hoping it would be more like 'Castle in the Sky' (or even One Piece) what with the airships and landscape, but it's more like a Rick Stein travel/food log, because all they seem to care about is food and recipes.

The characters are all your traditional anime archetypes, of course, but I've learnt to just accept that, and instead focus on the story/plot, which, as noted above, is pretty non-existant. I did wonder if we were getting a Moby Dick kind of plot, but that dragon was killed and eaten fairly quickly. I do use the term 'dragon' loosely though, as they're more like aliens/fancy goldfish.

Overall, a rather forgettable show.

Snowpiercer
(2020)

Enjoyable but a bit cliche
I don't think it's reasonable to rate this down in the 1s and 2s like some people. The acting is good, the visuals are good, but yes, a moving train instead of a bunker near a geothermal heat source doesn't really make sense in terms of surviving the apocalypse, but I prefer the train. So yeah, you need to suspend your disbelief and just accept that the science is a bit iffy, but that's what you have to do when exploring premises and concepts that we'll never experience in the real world. Also, it is a bit cliche and overly polished, but there's no such thing as an original idea these days. And as for the political correctness - huh? Do black people and asians 'existing' constitute political correctness now? I'm not seeing any politics asides from the show being class warfare just like the movie.

Martha Bakes
(2011)

Just deserts
I'm not usually a cooking show watcher, but I've really taken to this program. Partly because I love deserts, cakes, etc, which are the primary focus of this program (hence the 'bakes'), but also because of Martha's soft-spoken and, quite frankly, calming disposition. It's just a very pleasant show to watch both inspiration-wise and aesthetically.

Battlestar Galactica
(2004)

Amazing
Just re-watched the whole series and it was no less enthralling. This is perhaps the best science fiction show of all time. Nothing else (except maybe The Expanse) compares.

I love the cat and mouse through space storyline. I love the anxiety of not knowing who's a cylon and who isn't among the characters. It's just such a tense show, with phenomenal acting. I mean, the chemistry between Roslin and Adama is like nothing else on TV.

If this was rebooted I think I would die from joy. I wouldn't want it remade though. It's too perfect. I would want the story continued. The cylons are still out there after all!

The only reason I rate it 9 not 10 is because of the, well, 'mystical' conclusion. However, I think they managed to handle that somehow. It is at odds with science fiction just a little bit, but it was still so dang compelling.

Frayed
(2019)

Weakish start, but enjoyable
I think I went into this expecting a snappy and funny comedy. What I got instead was a humorous and quirky drama. Once I accepted that, I was then able to enjoy it. Just don't expect to be rolling on the floor the whole time. It wants parts of its storyline to be taken seriously (which it then subverts, thereby supplying some of its humour). It also reminds me a bit of Keeping Up Appearances, the main character being somewhat of a Hyacinth Bucket (this is another source of this humour).

Overall, a weakish start, but it has potential and I love the 80s, beachy aesthetic. It's a little crass as someone else pointed out, but I love the Inbetweeners, so I obviously enjoy that. To each their own.

May revise this review once further along. It feels like the kind of show that gets better as it matures. I also find her big head of red hair hilarious for some reason, so I'll keep watching just for that lol!

7Seeds
(2019)

Distracting pacing and plot issues, otherwise strong premise
Great premise, but the execution is lacking. It jumps from scene to scene, with sometimes drastic changes in between despite only a second having passed. Time skips abound... Also quite a bit of artistic and metaphoric hubris, which is unnecessary and just drags the plot down. Too many cliches and moments of deus ex machina, too. Overall, a good premise let down by poor writing/direction.

Lunatics
(2019)

Didn't get it at first...
As the title suggests, after the first episode of this show I didn't get it. It wasn't funny, it actually seemed pointless, and then I started taking notice of the nuances and began appreciating the characters as characters, at which point I finally understood.

It kind of reminds me of the office, not just the whole mocumentary thing, but the little things that make you love the characters. And like the office, it's not laugh out loud funny the whole time, you just enjoy their situations and interactions (however, there are some moments where I burst out laughing, some of the lines are hilarious, which is why you must pay attention to every line in case you miss it).

It might be a little crass for some people, but I don't think it's overdone (Veep level crass). I'm glad I didn't abandon it one episode one. It took a couple of episodes to hook me and now I've almost finished it.

It's an odd and quirky little show, but I love it.

Black Summer
(2019)

Another Babs lost too soon..
This show is worth more than 6.5

Good acting Great atmosphere Thrilling action

Yes, it has its shortcomings. I'm not denying that. Other reviewers have noted the unrealistic reactions/choices made by people under intense pressure. This, however, is rather minor in my opinion. It's not mind numbingly stupid like in The Walking Dead. After all, if riots and ISIS have taught us anything, it's that people can go whack in certain situations. Personally, I enjoyed the school episode. Perhaps gimmicky, but it was fun to watch.

Furthermore, and most importantly, the zombies are actually scary! They run, they have strength, they're vicious and tenacious, and they have some hunting smarts about them. My biggest problem with TWD is the lame zombies! TWD zombies are slow and useless and shouldn't be able to kill anyone, which makes TWD action sequences so LAME! In this show, however, the zombies are terrifying. It makes the action more logical. Going outside and making plans has higher stakes in this show, therefore the drama and action feels more real.

The blue filter may annoy some, but I kind of like that also. Makes it feel desolate and apocalyptic, but that's just subjective.

Overall, it's a lot better than I thought it would be. I just want the writers to smarten up a bit. Avoid contrived situations, avoid melodrama and don't be lame! It's horror. It's survival. Maintain those themes.

Sirius the Jaeger
(2018)

Generic overtones, but good
It's anime and isn't immune to clichés, but it's enjoyable. The setting and beautiful animation is worth it. But the story/plot does show promise. I think it might find its feet in season 2 (if there's one). It just needs to distinguish itself a little better,

IO
(2019)

Unjustly rated
No, it's not action packed. No, its plot isn't convoluted with a twist at every turn. It's just a story about the end of human civilization and one girl's determination to see its rebirth.

Beautiful cinematography, beautiful soundtrack and a moody atmosphere. A great flick to watch on a grey, Sunday afternoon. Yes, it's the kind of movie you need to be in the mood for, but I enjoyed it. Very tranquil and bore its own kind of poignance. .

The Haunting of Hill House: Silence Lay Steadily
(2018)
Episode 10, Season 1

Disappointing
Not scary. That's my biggest issue. No real tension, no genuinely scary moments, just an overwinded speech about family togetherness. This show had been really good up until that flop. Sigh. EDIT: having slept on it, I've come to the conclusion that my biggest gripe was the staging.. Mid season, 'Two Storms' especially, was so organic in the way it unfolded. I mean, it's some of the most gripping and natural drama I've seen. The finale, however, lost this incredibly organic and natural flow in place of very staged theatrics. That is, it lost its grittiness and became more like an episode of American Horror Story. Of course, if there's a season 2, I''ll be watching it no questions asked, but I would like the grittiness and organic flow to come back, along with some more scary moments that remain scary.
