Breaking Bad
(2008)

Absolutely the new "Gold Standard" for American TV
The reader's opinions are spot on. But, all viewers need to accept that 'Breaking Bad' is pure entertainment ... not a morality play or the balance of good over evil. Greed, avarice, and moral voids are part of all human life. That, in itself, is what makes this one of the best (if not the best) of American crime series in the 21st Century. Just as Forbrydelsen (Danish) and The Killing plowed new fields, so is 'Breaking Bad'. Breaking bad - Especially our ongoing 'war on drugs' adds a special cachet to the stories. All future US crime / drug / action / justice - including crime and punishment genres will be judged by this marvelous series. Wonderful ... we will not miss one episode ... and we live in Asia. We love it. Better than 'The Wire,' 'The Shield,' or The Sopranos. We can only hope that they find a way to to approach the production values of Breaking Bad in future efforts. Not to be missed - excellente!

End of Watch
(2012)

Not your run of the mill LAPD movies
Unlike many of the current crop of macho cop dramas, End of Watch plays mainly to the grit of the daily challenges of patrolling the mean streets of South Central LA in the "Shootin' Newton" division. Unlike the stunning LA Confidential, with a historical story line, End of Watch is done in the cinema ver'ite' style - in a realistic real cops on duty in the LA war zone frame. The casting in this movie is picture perfect, with each actor giving in depth performances. The story line brings the Mexican / US drug problem into crystal clarity. Initially, the story fails to coalesce, and the video cam work is a bit disjointed and over done at the outset, but once you settle in to cinematic method, the film gets a hold on you. Definitely a movie for any law enforcement aficionados collection.

Sherlock
(2010)

A stunning revisit to the quintessential detective / wonderful.
As a huge fan of crime, apprehension, and punishment, this series is spot-on and leads the pack, big screen or small. At the risk of being called a bit of a snob, this British work needs to be viewed with pleasure and attention, as walking away for 5-minutes (unlike some of the current crop of action / cops thrillers), these episodes are brain food. Each story brings a new and compelling adventure for Sherlock and Doctor Holmes. Additionally, none of the plots are rehashes of other stories, either from Britain, or across the pond. Superb. You won't want to miss a second - because the story lines move at warp speed, as Sherlock applies his gift of observation and detection so adroitly, you'll be pleased, stunned, and truly entertained. My hope is that this creation will not be just a flash-in-the-pan, but a continued offering from our British friends.

Seconds
(1966)

An overlooked classic
Seconds was probably Rock Hudson's best role. Not monetarily, but as an example of his true potential as an artist. This fact will be lost on succeeding generations, but to those who knew and understood the sixties, it's a signal event. This Frankenheimer work encapsulates the ennui and confusion of the sixties, especially the chasm between the 50's generation, and the generation of the 60's, who were just joining the scene. This film, at a subliminal level, carries and exposes the burdens of the post WW2 generation. It is a hidden American gem that should be required viewing in any theater of higher learning.

For no other reason, than to promote quality film, I invite younger talents and producers to visit this unique film - a time capsule, so to speak. Believe me, it is worth a 21st Century remake.

The Da Vinci Code
(2006)

Endurable
I sat though the film today.

The Davinci Code was endurable, but it failed on its promise. Like "the Shining" some films can never match the written word. This effort may be lacking in that same regard.

I certainly wouldn't, for even an instant, depreciate the abilities and talent of the actors. They were great. Their craft as presented was exemplary - the problem was,the film is a well done effort that will appeal to some, be boring to many, and repulsive to those of the religious bent.

My score, 6.5 out of 10 stars.
