Gekijôban Fearî Teiru: Doragon Kurai
(2017)

Wait, what?
I have been a huge fan of the series for a long time, but I have never read any of the manga.

As a result of this, I can only assume they have skipped an arc to make this film, as the last episode of Fairy Tail showed everyone was scattered after the guild was disbanded.

Now all of a sudden, everyone is back together with no explanation. The dissolution isn't ever even mentioned, even though it is clearly set after the series due to Gray's Demon Slayer form showing up. But I could sort of forgive that if we just had an explanation for some of the stuff that happened in the film, but it treats the viewer as though they are an expert on what I assume is in the manga.

Carla can suddenly become a human?

Lucy now receives gear to equip for herself when she summons her spirits?

Natsu is now not only a dragon-slayer, but also half-dragon? And he is also this E.N.D that we have been hearing about for the whole series?

What?

I have such fond memories of the series, but this film left me with such a sour taste in my mouth. Apparently the series is getting a final run of episodes sometime this year. I really hope that they return to the formular that I used to enjoy so much and actually explains some of the random stuff that was just shoved into this film.

The story to this film was so weak, that it hardly bears mentioning next to the questions that it left me with.

Some of the fight scenes were just about Ok, but they are nothing compared to the ones from the main series.

None of the characters feel like their series versions. Instead they are just cardboard cutouts used as stand-ins. The main theme of the show around friendship and teamwork is completely absent here. The only part that has any semblance of their series counterparts is during the beginning when they need to retrieve the ring stealthily in the bar and they are actually using teamwork.

Gajeel, Patherlily, Juvia and Levy are also in the film, but they never actually do anything (with the exception of Juvia who helps with one battle). The time taken up by these characters would have been much better spent on strengthening the main story.

All in all, unless the final series requires you to watch this to understand the next storyline, give it a miss for your own sanity.

Devilman: Crybaby
(2018)

Simply Awful
When I first read the blurb of this series, I became very intrigued. I was expecting this to be a series about a boy who gets the powers of a demon in order to protect humanity from other demons, but would be plagued by his evil side, which he would need to tame and master. What we actually get is essentially just a guy who gets superpowers with no drawbacks at all. He just goes with everything as if it's normal. Its overly simplistic and boring art style didn't help my expectations, but the action and good voice acting did show a small amount of promise. Everything up to around episode 6 was going ok story wise. Demon hunting to try to protect humans was what I had been hoping for. However, from episode 7 onwards, any promise that this show had just dissintergrates. There is no pay off to anything from the previous episodes. Plotlines which had felt rushed early on have no lasting impact on any of the characters. Nothing is revisited and there is never any history of the devil that Akira is bound to (it is mentioned to be some sort of "champion" late in the series, but that's literally all we ever learn about it). There is an amazing moment during episode 9 when it looks like all the hard work Akira has put in to trying to save humans from demons has started to pay off, but any semblance of a decent ending to this tale is snatched away almost in a mocking and insulting manner. The ending to the series was almost pointless to watch, as there were no longer any emotional attachments to make me care if Akira won or lost against the main villain. Some might say the darker ending is edgy or unusual, therefore making it thought-provoking or something only true fans will appreciate, but in all honesty it's just shoddy writing.

Destiny
(2014)

Such a disappointment!
Having been a Halo fan for many years, I was expecting a world filled to the brim with story. A very dark look at the fate of Humanity just managing to cling to life against hordes of aliens. I was expecting my Ghost to guide me through the darkness with witty banter and interesting tales.

What we got was a bland run of near identical missions (granted, they do go through some very pretty scenery) with a boring final "boss" mission and a storyline that leaves you wondering what the hell just happened. You never once get the sense of a desperate Humanity fighting tooth and nail for survival, just a boring 10 minute stroll through mission after mission, killing lots of mostly easy enemies which rarely serve up any decent loot from the random drops.

At no point was a story developed. The only two cut-scenes that have any kind of story to them in the Reef area cannot be accessed twice, while the other (much less story driven) cut-scenes can be rewatched, but only by going through one of the bland levels again. What could have been an amazing piece of lore was swept under the rug when the Speaker is talking about the Traveler. He should have explained how it saved humanity, but instead he merely recounts about how he COULD tell you about it without explaining anything at all. That kind of frustrating story point is found in every part of the game where the story could be progressed.

Peter Dinklage's performance as the Ghost is almost cringe-worthy at times, with the dull monotone that he was apparently instructed to use making the only character companion you have very boring to listen to. This apparent "guide" is purely used as a device to hold you up in an area while having to kill multiple waves of enemies, before moving on slightly to be held up again and kill multiple waves of enemies. The game mechanics never really vary from that pattern.

The saving graces of this game are it's gameplay and sound design. If you have played Halo, the guns handle very similarly, while the powers of each of the three classes make you feel amazing as you launch them straight at a group of enemies, disintegrating them all in one go.

The music of Destiny is yet another master-piece by (now ex-Bungie) composer Martin O'Donnell and is easily the best feature of the whole game, adding more of an emotional sense to the game than anything in the storyline itself.

Overall, Destiny is fun to play with a group of friends when you don't think too much about the story, but if you are looking for the next big sci-fi story in games, look elsewhere.

RWBY
(2012)

A great new show from the makers of Red vs Blue
I'm not going to sugar coat it. Yes, most of the episodes are very short, even by anime/cartoon standards, and the voice acting is sometimes a bit off.

Saying that, this is the first time that Rooster Teeth have attempted this kind of show, so this season is basically a test run. As with all of RT's productions, you can tell that they are making this because they WANT to make it, not just to widen their appeal. When comparing it to other anime shows, you have to take into account that most of them have quite wealthy companies producing them, and this is being funded by Rooster Teeth alone. There wouldn't be much point pouring lots of funding into something that could be a complete failure. Expect a lot more from the next series.

The characters have plenty of room for character growth and when the fight scenes happen, you are so amazed by them that you no longer care how rare they are.

Overall, I would say that while there is lots of room for improvement, it is a great series to watch when you just want to take it easy and have a good time.
