A History of Violence
(2005)

This movie was horrible
The cinematography was good. The special effects were great. The fight choreography was very impressive. The acting was only mediocre at best. The sex scenes were forced. The plot was crap! I went to see this film with high hopes because I like Viggo and I read the graphic novel. This movie was crap! The climactic beginning took 9 years to happen and the film slowed from there. If you want examples of long boring stretches of needless film footage, here ya go. The highlight of the film was when the sound went out and everybody in the theater started adding their own dialog! Viggo was not quietly effective, he was just quiet. The only reason I did not give a 1 was that all the plot supporting elements were good. The plot was just plain bad! If you have seen the trailer for this film, you have seen all you need to see! Save your money and go buy a soda. You'll enjoy it more.

Kingdom of Heaven
(2005)

Enemies of Orlando beware!!!!
I went to see this film prepared to be disappointed. I like Bloom as an actor but I was skeptical regarding his ability to pull off the leading role in an epic film. Fortunantly my fears were unfounded. Bloom did an excellent job. The supporting actors that stood out most in my mind were Alexander Siddig and Marton Csokas. Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons had limited roles but their performances were, as always, of the highest quality. I have read many negative comments about Bloom's ability to play the lead in a major film. Bloom's detractors fail to realize that Orlando is an actor of the old school type. Reference the old black and white films that required actors to act with their bodies and expressions in addition to being able to spout well written lines. So enemies of Orlando beware, you may have a surprise in store if you go see this film. My most pleasant surprise was Scott's portrayal of the Muslim people. He showed them to an honorable and noble people fighting for their beliefs just as the Christians fought for theirs. A remarkable film all the way around. Worth seeing twice.

The Calcium Kid
(2004)

Very British, Very Funny
The Calcium Kid is very funny in the tradition of "Young Frankenstein" and Monty Python stuff. Orlando Bloom shows that he can do more then play the swashbuckler. The humor ranges from subtle to absurd. The screenplay was just a little shy of pure genius. Sometimes it's nice to see a film that is just for fun. The actors have a chance to have fun and make fun of themselves. Orlando Bloom plays a wonderful part as our hapless hero. The supporting cast is great. The direction was hilarious. Pay attention though, you might miss some very funny stuff!! I give it 8/10 for the quality of work throughout the production. I literally laughed out loud several times. It's worth watching at least once, but I'll bet you'll want to see it again.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
(2001)

Tolkien would be proud
Having read The Lord of the Rings over 20 years ago, I was somewhat reticent to comment on these movies prior to actually seeing all three. I was absolutely blown away. Jackson did an extraordinary job in bringing Middle-Earth to the screen. The casting was incredible. Jackson did something that I never dreamed possible. He replaced the images my imagination had created for these characters with the faces of those he cast in their roles. When I read LotR now, I see the movie Legolas, Aragorn, and all the others. The only complaint I have with the casting was Cate Blanchet's nose. Jackson created a master piece based on a work who's author was voted author of the millennium. A must see, but even more so a must READ!!!!
