Avatar: The Last Airbender
(2024)

Oh dear, Oh dear, O dear.......
Visually this seems a definite "10". But the acting seldom rises above that of your local community theatre group - in fact at times my local community group does a lot better than the actors in this series. And thus the overall rating is "5", because the acting is definitely a "0".

Of course it is to be expected when the opening credits say Netflix and Nickelodeon ... but as Nickelodeon has very little concept of acting it is not very surprising.

So many of today's series are sacrificing acting for visual effects. It is becoming very rare to experience to fine good acting to compliment the visuals.

Season 2 Excellent
Season 1 was extremely good, and season 2 outperforms. When it comes to the final episode it does better than many Hollywood action movies. Seeing that there is a season 3 already to go is great.

There are many highs for this 2nd series - the cast, the writing, the production, the Mick Jager theme song. The story line is well presented, allowing the viewer to follow the intricacies and double crossings without getting confused.

The cast is uniformly excellent, button Gary Oldman excels in the role of Jason Lamb. Combined with season 1, we see many more facets of the character. The same can be said of all the continuing characters.

This is a must watch series.

Repetionitis
No such word as my headline, but this must be the most repetitive series ever made. At best guess there was some leftover production money, a couple if actors with contract needs to be fulfilled, and a writer who obviously had no interest in the story and didn't care if the script made any sense. The technique of shooting longer scenes then cutting and pasting in the editing process to create a longer program, is so apparent here because of the failure to do any kind of continuity work. I at least did watch all episodes which I always feels entitles you to write a review. Our reviewers have said they wish they had read reviews before watching: I wholeheartedly agree.

Secrets & Lies
(2014)

Bloated, predictable load of rubbish
The further you go in this.series, the more bloated and predictable it becomes. The characters are seriously flawed, the plot line gets more stupid with every episode. The characters are so badly constructed that you can go out for pizza and a beer and not miss anything. Normally I am accepting of high rated reviews, but everybody who has rated this series 7/10 must be very susceptible to bad scripts, bad acting, and ridiculous, unoriginal plot lines. I made it to the "surprise" ending, which is no surprise to anyone with any ability to comprehend poor writing. Our final comment while we watched the final episode was " what a ridiculous load of rubbish and a waste of time". It also becomes very boring with Martin Henderson continually taking his shirt off seemingly many times every episode, and the neighbour who is always in his underwear!

The Crowded Room
(2023)

Fals apart at the end
Episodes 1 through 7 are definitely a 10. Then comes the basically three episode conclusion: the acting remains excellent, but the story development fails to keep up, and exposes the fact that the overall writing is not quite up to the planned story. As the episodes progress and you begin to understand the overall arc of the plot, the script does not keep up with where you, the viewer, are already at. I agree with the reviews of Tom Holland's performance, as well as the other excellent cast. The courtroom part of the story is so predictable that you can consider jumping to the last part of the final episode. The question of Adam is so obvious that the writers insult the viewer's intelligence by not addressing it till the final episode.

Grantchester
(2014)

5/10 only for season 8
I have enjoyed seasons 1 - 7, but season 8 is a rather tedious slog. The recurring storyline reflecting the accident in episode 1, flows through season 8 and makes the season far less enjoyable than previous seasons. Whoever decided the projection for this season apparently decided that it should be more reflective of "society". In that decision they have downgraded the entire series. Often series goes on too long and implode. It would seem that Grantchester has now joined the list of programs that have gone on too long. From now on I think I will not watch any more than four seasons of any series -

Defending the Guilty
(2018)

Not enough!
This is the first and so far last series: apparently the second season was cancelled by COVID? That is a great shame. If you watch all the episodes, it really meshes as a series: good characters and good story lines, good acting (but occasionally dialogue is a little difficult to understand). Hopefully somebody will resurrect this series.

As an aside, IMDB's requirement of 600 characters is becoming problematic: sometimes a short review is as good as a long rambling one. Nothing is gained by adding superfluous comments. IMDB please reconsider your 600 character requirement: it probably prevents a lot of people from posting.

The English
(2022)

An emotional ride
This must rank as one of the best series of the year. In order to appreciate it, you need to watch all episodes. The last episode answers questions you may have had. Reference has been made to the "spaghetti westerns", and this is certainly true; there is even a brief shot in one episode that bears a striking resemblance to the final shot in "Gone With The Wind". Regardless of the locations used, a sense of the west is achieved. There is violence in the series, but it represents the violence that "America" was born in, and continues to live in. With a lot of attention being paid to indigenous issues in Canada, this series provides some stark commentary on the Indigenous peoples of the USA.the series is thought provoking.

Angela Black
(2021)

Too predictable.
Unfortunately Samuel Adewunmi's acting gives the plot away very early in the series. I survived till the middle of episode three and then I gave up. The production values are good, but the script is at rather weak. Perhaps there have been too many of these psychological plots, and viewers are becoming too used to these types of twist and turn plots.

Holding
(2022)

Watch the whole thing.
This is a gentle, developing program that draws you in slowly. It is well worth sticking to the end. Particularly.amazing is Brenda Frickers monologue in episode 3. It is a masterclass in acting, all on it's own. I ended up viewing it a second time, and it is just as impressive as the first viewing. She should win an award for that speech alone.

Coroner: Death Goes On
(2022)
Episode 12, Season 4

Ridiculous
What a rubbish end to a mostly enjoyable series. Why do writers feel the need to screw up a series by going in silly directions. I do hope there is another season and that they manage to pull the series back together.

Around the World in 80 Days
(2021)

Adapted..and a waste of talent
Well the credits do say "adapted"! But this adaptation is a little too far from the Original. It is difficult to understand why the producers felt it so necessary to make such statements. This should have been wonderful...it is an amazing story that needs no "adaptation". A great opportunity missed.

Magpie Murders
(2022)

Massive continuity error at the end of episode 2
If you notice the glaring continuity error at the end of the second episode, you will probably find it difficult to continue. If you don't spot it, as a vast majority of the highly rated reviews obviously didn't, then you will probably enjoy the rest of the series. For me it is the kind of error that should not have happened - just plain carelessness by the writer and the director.

Unbelievable
(2019)

After the first episode....
The first episode is quite frankly boring...which given the subject matter is surprising. Once the female detectives are involved, the quality and believablity skyrockets to an exceptional program. Excellent acting and writing. One star deducted for the first episode.

Sorjonen
(2016)

Inconsistency in translation
Whilst reasonably enjoyable, there are moments, particularly in "Dragonflies Ep.2" where there are scenes with Russian dialogue, no subtitles or translation, leaving the viewer to guess at what is happening. Dubbing is one thing, but this lack of continuity is disruptive for the viewer.

Unorthodox
(2020)

Religion
Never having been a very religious person, this show simply confirms my belief that strict religion is the the most damaging feature of life. The roles are well performed and the production quality is high. The suppression of women in this religion is depicted unrelentingly.

Pieces of Her
(2022)

Confusing flashbacks.
Not a bad idea to keep a notepad and pencil handy while watching this. It helps to make notes so you can keep track of the multiple flashbacks that.are the dominant part of this show. Their muddled chronological order can result in the viewer not being sure where exactly they are in the story. More strategic editing could have helped a lot.

Reacher
(2022)

Just fun
Nothing to challenge your mental abilities, just action with humor, and a couple of gross outs. Every now and then it's good to just let something wash over you and distract from all the c**p going on around us.

Stay Close
(2021)

Problem: "written by..."
There are four writers credited with this script...and there in lies the problem as apparently none of these writers communicated with the others.

If you value logic then you will have a great amount of difficulty in making it through all episodes. I deliberately did so, so that I could write this review.

The production values are good, and certain performances are quite good.

BUT logic is missing from the first episode to the last, making for a completely nonsense script.

After Life
(2019)

Series 3, Episode 6
A brilliant and deeply moving ending to an outrageous and wonderful series. Many over the top moments but always funny. Ended up reaching for the Kleenex as the series concluded. Ricky Gervais never disappoints.

Succession
(2018)

Succession - the "F" word show
There is not a likeable character in this show, It seems that every sentence uttered has the "f" word in it...at least once. There should be an "excessive language" warning at the opening (not just "language"). So why do I continue watching...because it's like driving past an horrendous car crash - you know you shouldn't rubber-neck but you have to. I am seriously hoping for a series finale in which EVERY character dies - it would be the only satisfactory ending.

Ted Lasso
(2020)

Roy Kent - Season 2
In season 2, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) becomes the best character in this series. In fact, this character deserves to be in the title. Other than the terrible episode 9, season 2, the series mostly retains the best of season 1. But.....Roy Kent rules!

Smother
(2021)

Missed an episode - and it didn't matter!
Missed watching one episode of this series and it didn't make any difference to the continuity. Not good if a six episode story is not impacted at all dropping one episode.

Ridley Road
(2021)

Rita Tushingham
Very good series, but Rita Tushingham acts circles around everyone: she is outstanding...we don't see enough of her. I lived in England at the time depicted, a lot of memories come back.

Coronation Street
(1960)

The death of a good series
I HEAR THE ROVERS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN!! THE END!

Watched this show since Ena, Martha and Minnie met in the snug.

The series now is truly appalling: is consists of violence - murder, kidnapping, prison, continual police presence, and stupid teenage angst.

In the hands if the current director, the program has deteriorated beyond anything I thought it could possibly be.

After decades of watching I am now turning of for good.

Goodbye "Coronation Street" - you were great, and did not deserve this ignominious end.
