Keeping Up with the Joneses
(2016)

Guys, no masterpiece here but I actually had fun
I just watched - "on a streaming service" . This movie that passed under the radar here in Italy.

My gf proposed it and I had no expectations at all.

It came after we had watched some really bad movies from the past (Spy hard, terrible and Hot Shots, worse than it seemed to my 15 yo self).

Well this movie made me laugh.

Yes, it's simple, formulaic maybe, but I found both actors very good and honest/heartfelt.

I liked especially Galifianakis in the role of the guy who cant keep his mouth shut, maybe because I am bit like him, but he is honest and transparent, maybe to much.

I also liked Jon Hamm in his semi serious bad guy misterious man version.

The girls were very good too and the jokes were quite good to me.

Ok the best I had was the unrivaled Spy with Melissa McCarth and Statham but this was good too.

Funny and not vulgar. Family and love oriented, finally.

The Dead Pool
(1988)

Jim Carrey as Axl Rose
Nuff said.

One of the first scene see Liam Neeson directing Jim Carrey in what appears to be an '80 videoclip of Welcome to the jungle.

In reality it is a scene of a movie called Hotel Satan.

For us born in the '76 it's quite an interesting mash up.

We got to know both actors only at much later stage.

Exactly as we got to appreciate Eastwood in his 1993 masterpiece The Unforgiven.

Alas this movie, shot 5 years before, does not really result as convincing.

The script also seems quite uncaring of consequences.

How can the director go on directing a movie when his main actor/character (Johnny Squares) has been killed the day before?

This really made no sense to me and killed the suspension of disbelief for me.

Also too much gratuitous killings by harry.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Autopsy
(2022)
Episode 3, Season 1

A true gem.
First thing, let's be honest Murray Abraham has a special space in my heart but I wont be partisan for this.

This not withstanding the episode is the peak episode of the first three.

I like the entire series, each episode has is own distinguished atmosphere and vibe but this one, oh boy, looked and felt exactly as a stephen king short novel.

It simply grows on you, slowly slowly until you are catched.

It gave me vibes of Tommyknockers and so many other short stories I read in both skeleton's crew or sometimes they come back.

I remember especially one where an alien form inhabited a villager until he was not any more a human being.

Yes this episode gave me the old pleasure of a king short story.

Kudos to all involved.

Friendship, sacrifice and the duality between a man and his... vessel.

All these elements are combined here.

American Murder: The Family Next Door
(2020)

Impressive work, yet terrible story
I am italian. Did not know anything about the story.

It's so well done, so immersive that you think it's a movie.

Technically is a masterpiece - the editing is impressive and innovative thanks - and the pain it makes you feel is unbearable.

Alas since it is and was all real, it leaves you with lots of question.

How does a brain can work with total denial instead than facing the facts of life?

I think mr Watts brain saw his family has an obstacle to his happiness and decided to remove it altogheter by force instead than going trough a "normal" divorce.

Accepting failure should be normal.

A case entirely similar, if not identical, happened in Italy: check for the Carlo Lissi case.

Bruised
(2020)

Honest review
I am a 45 yo white european man and an avid moviegoer.

I think this is Halle Berry beat acting in a long while (and let's be honest her oscar for Monster's ball was excessive).

A honest movie, with good plots and characters and a nice production value.

All actors are good and this is important.

We all know Netflix produced movie have the Hallmark risk, albeit at a higher level, of being formulaic and excessively politically correct.

This movie does not fall into that category and I put it above the average.

The Guilty
(2021)

It's a remake but a good one.
Oh my gosh, let's avoid stupid polarizations.

Yeah this is an american remake of a danish movie (which I have not seen yet) so it's doomed to be subject to the same all critics.

No, this is a good movie with an amazing performance by Gyllenhall.

Probably not as nuanced or restrained as the original (all danish movie, and I have seem a huge ton, are played much less dramatically and more subtly as in europe overall) but a very good one, convinving enough and keeping you gripped.

The screenplay, albeit adapted by pizzolatto, was good to begin with in the origin and does the rest.

Watch Locke before or after.

The Devil All the Time
(2020)

Slow pace and tense southern gothic
Title says it all. Let me just say how much I enjoyed the incredible ensemble cast in so far different roles than those crappy marvel movies. What an amazing talent at the service of this slow paced burner. Be patient and you'll be rewarded. Stick to it and don't distract.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
(2020)

A joyful and feel good watch once in a while
I think what a true movie passionate as I consider myself is the ability to adjust expectations according to the type pf movie you watch and still find enjoyment in it. This means to be able to enjoy also a funny and easy feel good movie like this that, btw, has a lot of really funny moments and had me in stitches a couple of time. So yeah, suspend your disbelief and let yourself enjoy a funny trip from Iceland to Edimburgh and back! Finally a film to watch with family too. I cannot help to underline the great job that Rachel McAdams makes with her role. I felt that her expressivity really holds large part of the movie. Kudos to her.

Bad Times at the El Royale
(2018)

Fantastic. You just have to wait.
You can't hurry love and you should not hurry this movie. Just relax, set back and enjoy the slow pace storytelling to get the plot going and build depth in the characters. It may seem obvious but I think that the level of acting here is absolutely fantastic. I especially praise Cynthia Erivo and Lewis Pullman since I had never saw them act before. of course I never expect less of anything amazing by Hamm and obviously the one and only Jeff Bridges. I also think hemsworth did very good a unusual role (for once) and so did dakota johnson. let's face it: drew goddard is up there with some of the best narrator today. I like him almost as I like Edgar Wright (who is my number one) or Taylor Sheridan.

Rapa Nui
(1994)

I watched it in theaters in 1994
And I can tell the story was compelling and the cinematography was great. Historically accurate? I don't think so but that is beyond the point since we do know anything about for sure about Easter Island. My opinion is that anyway the screenplay gives a plausible explanation of why the island became as such. It's bit like Apocalypto before apocalypto with less violence.

Still Life
(2013)

And ode to sensibility
I like to see that many persons wrote reviews very similar to the one I would have written. It means the movie has for them the same sense of beauty and the impact it had for me. I could not help shedding a tear with empathy for the beautiful soul of the protagonist. A man who is able to find the best and the worth in the life of everyone. Every life is worth and meaningful. A kind sould, he knew it.

Dolemite Is My Name
(2019)

I loved every minute
I am an italian man and I enjoyed every second of this movie. It's finally a joyous and happy movie with great actors bringing perfectly the vibe of that era and it's amazing. Finally, finally a good funny movie which are becoming a rarity. Would we please praise Wesley Snipes? How good is him is a comedy role? Lol he is amazing (as is the rest) Also the set and dresses is lovely. And the Queen Bee character and actress is amazing. Moving and funny. Just great. Thanks to Eddie Murphy: really is best movie also because he is never over the top and always believable.

Polar
(2019)

Polar not Arctic (don't get confused)
I started watching it believing it was the riveted Arctic. No this was Polar. As soon as titles began, fluo green grass colors set the tone and Johnny Knoxville appeared I knew I was in for something entirely different. I have to admit, much to my guilt, I sat through it because thisnotwithanding because of Mads Mikkelsen: one of the greatest actors around today. Also I was quite taken aback but in the end, despite it's excessive blood spattering and torture and over the top graphics (probably because it's from a comic) I watched it entirely. Alas I am 41 and I am starting to hate shaky cameras and ultra high speed montage/ sequences as a trope for a character bad memories. All in all, a guilty pleasure. Just like the raunchy comic you read without telling no one.

Creep
(2014)

It crawls
I wish movie reviews were weighted on the basis of age. people downvoting this movie must be very young: this is the only explanation possible. Sorry guys: this movie is a gem. It is goddamn creeping: slowly crawls under your skin and goes back and forth into your mind. Until the end.

Brigsby Bear
(2017)

Unexpected and authentic
I would not go into details. The movie is well executed and written. In some scenes I had a reminiscence of forgetting sarah marshall in as much art can be used as therapy to freely express ourselves and therefore coming to terms with life's traumas. I'd like to express gratitude to the lonely island for producing a movie like this. I especially loved Kinnear's acting.

High-Rise
(2015)

An absolute mess.
I gave it a three because of the acting. All actors do their best but you can't make a movie that comes apart at the seams like this. I can't even explain to myself why lastexittonnowhere made a t-shirt celebrating this absolute mess. This movie along with driven is one of worst I have seen. But this is one is pretentious.

A Futile and Stupid Gesture
(2018)

I enjoyed it and I tell you why
I will try to keep it short and simple. The acting here is super good and the movie made me feel as If I were there. I think they made a good job in creating the vibe and the atmosphere of those times. It sure helps the those super strange guys are played by a great ensemble of today's finest comedian. I didn't know about Doug who clearly is the center and the most developed character but I am glad to have learned about him. This movie is a honest homage to him and his craft.

Locke
(2013)

Amazing (but not for the reason you might think)
This movie is by far the best I have seen in this season. As we all know, due to the trailer and the comments we read on the papers and internet, Ivan Locke has a problem to solve and he must solve it by phone during one driving night. Yet we don't know what this "problem" is. Usually "thrillers" emphasize on difficult task imposed on the main character but here the first surprise is that his task his being more human than human: it is to hold on to what he cares most while at the same tame taking responsibility for what an act he has done. In my opinion, in getting us to know this man, the movie creates a fantastic character: Ivan Locke is a human hero, struggling to keep his life and his loved ones together willing to sacrifice also success, money and a job he loves for this. Because what profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Thanks for reminding us how real men should live: responsibly.

Martyrs
(2008)

Dull, indeed.
I watched this movie last night. Maybe I was expecting something different, yes, because I was expecting a more subtle version of hostel. But it turns out that hostel has more plot then this one. First of all the movie is really boring and dull for the second half. Ladder Down. Door opens. Someone enter. Beat chained girl. Close door. Door opens, woman enter, feed chained girl. Door close. And so on for half an hour. Are you kidding me, son? Let's watch a Simon Thauer porn movie, it's better; it's more honest and less repetitive. Plus, midway during the first half, it is easy to understand that she sees things that exist only inside her mind; thanks, not exactly a new idea (sixth sense docet). Plus I could not really relate with the characters, as they are quite monodimensional. As for the premises or, as the director puts it, the actual presence of justifications for the violence in the story, wheel, they are thinner than the air on the Himalaya! Really. No one could believe them. Beside the term "martyr" has different meaning: martyrs are those who sacrifice themselves for something they believe in (e.g. all the victims of totalitarian regimes), not for something others believe in, as in the movie. Here they are merelyt victims of perverted and depraved persons and its shows. Luckily we are only victims of a pompous director.

Driven
(2001)

I wanted to melt into the seat!
The only way to describe this movie is that it look like 116 minutes composed of sixty-eight 2-minutes-long music video clips that have been randomly juxtasposed on to each other (or even more). I watched it with full attention in a movie theater, I could not believe what was happening in front of my eyes. It's not really a problem of suspension if disbelief, it's that it really has no purpose, no meaning and it seems that every actor is perfectly aware of that; as a result each performance is so flat and stereotyped that you could figure out the next line or the next scene (sudden and improbable gear-scalings included). the problem, differently from the fast and furious franchise, is that the movie takes itself seriously, thus not preventing you from asking yourself, "hey, director, "are you kidding me"? Avoid it. Now.

The Sunchaser
(1996)

forceful movie
I watched it almost alone in a Italian theater a few years ago and I liked it very much for there is soul in this movie which is about soul. the question raised by sunchaser is: what can a man earn after he has lost its soul? the answers is: nothing. because nothing you can buy (be it an expensive car, a luxury home or the prettiest woman) can replace or substitute it. so care about your soul, live up to the great questions that life brings and do not try to skip them. as an Italian i admit that I enjoyed very much the beautiful landscapes portrayed by this master of the camera.

The Island
(2005)

Critics worldwide got it wrong
If you read critics in the US via rottentomatoes half of them accuse director that there are too much explosions and not enough drama and so on. the truth is, I've seen the movie yesterday here in italy, that this movie is very well done. Good story, good plot, good acting and good action when necessary. the theme treated by the movie are: - the limit of science: can science make use of men (even though these me are fabricated) as a mean and not as an end? - what it takes to makes a human being? the movie suggest that if you ask yourself questions regarding the meaning of life and existence and if your recognise that the human being is in endless search for happiness, then you are a man. a desire for beauty, love and felicity makes you a true human being. no matter if you were not born in the conventional way or through clonation. you cannot use "it" as a repair for another human being.
