V
(1983)

flawed but still powerful and engaging
V: the Original 2-part miniseries is over 20 years old now. But anyone who saw it on TV in the early 80's (as I did) will never forget how entertaining it was. And upon recent re-viewing the series still holds up as a powerful and engaging piece of TV drama.

Is the story contrived? Somewhat. Are the special effects dated? Yes, this was a made for TV movie/miniseries created in the early 80's, but comparative to that time frame the effects were rather impressive. Some of the acting is either over-the-top or rather mediocre. These flaws can be forgiven considering the overall intriguing concepts presented to the viewer. Several of the main characters including some of the malevolent alien "Visitors" are indeed quite enduring.

Nonetheless V is surprisingly relevant to our current state of national affairs. I would recommend this movie not only to sci-fi admirers, but also to anyone who enjoys a good drama.

Brokeback Mountain
(2005)

so good it hurts
Sorry, had to give this movie 9 out of 10. It was just that good. Maybe a little too long, but otherwise one of the best films I've seen in a long time.

I can't stop thinking about it. I don't know what else I can say. Even if the subject matter makes you squirm, as I'm sure some people will, you just have to see it. I laughed, I cried, I cared about the characters, and they could not have been more "real". I can't think of another movie that got under my skin like this. I liked it, I loved it, it was hard to watch, but worth the time spent. If you don't feel something then you might not be a human.

Unzipped
(1995)

Three reasons
I enjoyed this film for three reasons. I like Isaac Mizrahi, I like fashion design, and I LOVE Linda Evangelista!

If you like any of these three elements (insert your own favorite supermodel) then most likely you will also like this documentary. The fashion design element is what surprised me the most. I had no idea what it must be like to be a high end clothing designer until I saw Unzipped. All the details of the clothing designs culminate at the end with a fashion show.

One of my guiltiest pleasures was watching Linda ham it up for the cameras. Cindy and Naomi didn't look too bad either. They might not be geniuses, but damn if they aren't fun to look at.

Donnie Darko
(2001)

anyone working in mental health knows
On a whim I bought the director's cut on DVD last night. It took me a night to "sleep on it" before I fully understood the film. It was (so far) the most beautiful movie experience I have encountered. The two other people I shared this movie with did not agree so much. I don't think they were able to grasp the ideas encapsulated.

Donnie Darko is the heart rending story of a young man possibly suffering from some form of mental illness. In a freak accident a jet turbine crashes through the ceiling of his house plowing right down into his bedroom. We witness his family dealing with their son/brother as he descends farther into depression and/or schizophrenia.

The frightening imagery, superb acting, and twisting plot line combine to tell the story that seemingly takes place in the spaces between consciousness and unconsciousness, in those remarkable distinct moments between the one thing no one can escape, those moments/seconds between dying and death.

Did Donnie Darko die? Or was he being born?

If you work in or have any experience dealing with mental illness, this movie will touch your heart. Don't judge. Just feel.
