Joker
(2019)

Really Really Good
Just saw Joker at the cinema and just had to see what others are making of it and I can only echo how good this film is. Cinematically gorgeous to look at and Superb performance by Joaquin which really makes you relate to the character and the circumstances around him.

The Favourite
(2018)

Pretentious depravity just done cynically for effect!
After hearing all the hype for this film and being an Emma Stone fan i was looking forwards to seeing this film. Costumes were great but from the off this film had scenes of unnecessary smut and depravity which i feel was just cynically and pretentiously done for shock effect. I didn't really find it shocking, im not 12 years old just daft really. Even though things like this did occur historically it just seemed forced, fake and not needed in the context of the film. Many people may disagree but i see many people do agree. This sort of behaviour and bad language worked in films like The Libertine as that was the true nature of that character but id of preferred it not to have been used here and the Director/producer/writers to of just played it as a straight like a normal peace of period drama rather than trying to sensationalise it.

Halloween
(2018)

Hmm. Wasted Opportunity!
I was born in 78 the same year the original was released and am a huge fan of that film as well as H20. Unfortunately i felt this one missed the mark somewhat. It wasn't horrible but not a classic either. Right form the start it was nice to see the original style Halloween opening credits and classic Carpenter synths which immediately put a smile on my face. The score also gets an update in this film which i felt was taking inspiration from films like 'IT Follows' which sound great but here lies the problem. Halloween being such an ICONIC movie i feel it needs to be true to itself and the original and maybe trying to appeal to a younger audience not only in score but in curtain pointless scenes as well as bringing in ill fitting humour maybe to temper the rather sombre feel to the film which is not in keeping with the original or H20 even given that this is classed as a horror movie. The feel and meter of the film just didn't sit right with me. Carpenter films are all about atmosphere and i think turning Lorrie into this reclusive bedraggled mad cat woman didn't work for me especially considering the characters suave in H20 all be it still a troubled personality she still had that Jamie Lee sexiness and je ne se quoi. I didn't love the casting either and the best thing to happen to those ridiculously stereotypical English characters was in a bit of a homage to H20 in the wash room scene. There were good things they did in this movie but all in all it just didn't work together, felt mismatched and didn't get the atmosphere right for me i'm afraid. Maybe i personally was just looking for a re-run of the original and H20 and less Rob Zombie style sombreness.

Hell or High Water
(2016)

Well put together but a bit slow...
I went to see this after reading rave reviews and at first thinking it was a western but on further inspection its actually set in modern times and is about two brothers who go on a series of bank raids. The film is shot in widescreen which looks superb on a large cinema screen especially as this film has lots of panoramic shots of the Texas countryside. The music is good too which is why i say this is a well put together film and well acted by Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges. Now i get to the down side. I feel the film was slow paced, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but without much in the way of suspense i felt it was a little boring at times. The main hook of the film is really the relationship between the two brothers, the rest is pretty much standard bank heist type stuff. There are a few humorous moments throughout the film which gave a bit of comic relief from the pretty heavy story line but overall i felt a little disappointed. A decant watch and i'd watch again when it comes on t.v but it didn't blow me away like some people are saying.

The Visit
(2015)

8/10 Pleasantly Surprised
I wasn't expecting this movie to be great after reading some reviews but some people don't always get it. I wonder if some people just go to random films not knowing what they are about and then slate them because it wasn't their cup of tea! The shaky home camera style is a bit annoying at times but see past that and see what is a very well put together horror film. This film is quite humorous and entertaining in a dark way and has a great twist that i didn't see coming like in Sixth Sense. Well cast and well written, good pace throughout, didn't feel slow or rushed and despite the shaky cam technique a good looking movie as well.

Everest
(2015)

Disappointed
I wasn't blown away by the trailer for this film but after reading many positive reviews decided to give it a go, hoping to be proved wrong. Sadly i was not. The beginning of this film which concentrated mainly on the preparation and walk up to base camp was so rushed and there was so little character development for the various climbers that throughout the film i found myself asking who's this guy again? and felt very little connection with them as people. I didn't think the cinematography did the beauty of the mountains much justice and about the only redeeming feature was Jason Clarke who i thought carried this film. There were times on the mountain in blizzard conditions i hadn't got the foggiest who was who or what they were saying and there was a point where it felt like there were scenes missing as it seemed to jump very quickly without the proper development of the plot. Disappointed!

While We're Young
(2014)

Disappointing
I saw the trailers for this, thought it looked funny and i like Stiller so gave it a whirl. What a mistake! This is not the comedy the trailers made it out to be, they show the best bits and when it came to watching the whole film it fell flat. This film was trying to be an intellectual dark comedy, maybe in the vein of Woody Allen but lacked the style, sophistication and plot. The mid life crisis thing, done many times before but better, the role reversal with the oldies doing the social media thing and the younger couple living like hippie bohemians felt like an attempt to be clever but just didn't feel real. The whole moral conscience thing Stiller had was muddled because of the way the plot didn't really make out that anyone had done anything very much wrong. This was deliberate but made the whole morality issue just too subtle for the audience to care. At the end i couldn't care less whether they had a baby together or not and found it all very irritating. I know it was supposed to be allegorical and therefore clever but to me at least it was just badly done and a bit pretentious.

The Music of Chance
(1993)

dam good offbeat film
An excellent poker player and his random investor get to play a high stakes poker game against and eccentric/weird rich couple of old doods. The player gets jinxed by his backer and losses all there money and then some and have to pay off the debt by working in the doods back yard for a couple of months and not allowed to leave till they've repaid there debt. Things turn nasty and i wouldn't want to be in these guys shoes thats for sure.

if your into offbeat slightly unnerving poker films then this is for you 8-) i love this film its a bit surreal, tense and unnerving and keeps you guessing 10/10
