Halo: Sanctuary
(2024)
Episode 1, Season 2

Better writers this time around
I enjoyed Season 1 of Halo but recognized its flaws. Most of my complaints had to do with the inconsistent writing. I think the showrunners took the feedback from viewers seriously because this season had a different tone for the better. I didn't know what to make of Pablo being cast at first just because he didn't fit the vision I had in my head of what Master Chief looked like. After this episode I feel like I've finally come around to enjoying him as the right actor for the job. I really enjoyed this opener and if they can keep this up Halo will be a big hit for a while. I'm excited to see where this story goes now.

Jury Duty
(2023)

Brilliant
Those of us fortunate enough to have seen the brilliant "Joe Schmo Show" many years ago will recognize the premise. Everyone is in on the joke except for one person. This allows to view the craziness from one person's Ernest point of view. I love reactionary humor and this show has it in spades.

We are 4 episodes in at this point and I've already laughed out loud a number of times. There is something oddly satisfying about seeing everyone having so much fun even when your know they are acting. Having seen "The Joe Schmo show" years ago I know that even though these characters are fake the comrodary they develop is often times very real and there are moments in this show when you can tell they're having the time of their lives. I am very excited about this show and hope it does well enough to produce more seasons.

Struggle Meals
(2018)

One of the few actual cooking shows left
This has become one of my favorite cooking shows. Most of what's on food network these days relies on cheap gimmicks or drama and I miss the days of just straight up cooking shows. This show is like a breath of fresh air and the host simply shows you great ways of making meals on a budget. I've actually gained a lot of helpful tips from watching a couple episodes of this which is more than I can say for most of what's on the food Network or the cooking channel. The host is fun, he keeps things simple , and he utilizes things most of us actually have in our kitchens. I love the idea that he breaks down meals based on their cost. I highly recommend this show for all the home cooks out there.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Udûn
(2022)
Episode 6, Season 1

Finally I'm excited about this show
I had a feeling this show was going to take a while to find its footing since it's telling such a large story but I have to admit the first couple of episodes had me worried a bit. This episode finally gave me a reason to be excited about what they are doing. I also think this episode gave the previous episodes more purpose since we can finally see where it's going. I loved the action, the scenery, the music, all of it. It really occurred to me when watching tonight that they have put a TON of money into this project as it looks incredible. If this is the kind of quality we can expect going forward then I'm more excited than ever to watch this for years to come.

The Masked Singer
(2019)

This is the absolute worst of modern television
I've tried watching this show several times thinking there must be something I'm missing since it' it has lots of viewers. It's just terrible. So much of it is fake, staged, or manipulated that it's almost embarrassing to pretend you believe it while watching. Watching the "judges" make obviously fake guesses on who the singers are is ludicrous. I feel like the folks who believe a show like this is real are the same who think 911 is a realistic depiction of emergency services. On top of all that, many of the singers are just plain terrible. I guess in the end maybe this show just isn't for me.

The Broken Hearts Gallery
(2020)

I liked it...Mostly
I really did enjoy this film for the most part. I think Geraldine Viswanathan is wonderful and funny. The film does seem like its reaching really hard to appear "woke" but I guess that's what the kids want right? I find it distracting from an otherwise cute story with really good actors. With that aside this was a fun watch and worth an afternoon watch.

Halo: Solace
(2022)
Episode 6, Season 1

By far the best episode of the season
This episode really moves things along and I feel like this is one of the episodes where a lot of the early season buildup is starting to pay off. Very well done, and this show is showing signs it could be a huge smash for Paramount if this continues.

Halo: Homecoming
(2022)
Episode 4, Season 1

Good story building
Not an action packed episode but I still really like how they're building this story. Giving master chief this much time for back story is making us care for the character more and I think if they time it right it will really pay off in the end. One thing that struck me tonight is how much I like the sound design in this show.

Halo: Emergence
(2022)
Episode 3, Season 1

The best episode of the first three by far
By far the best episode yet. I'm really starting to get into this series. It seems much more layered than I initially thought it might be. The set up from the first two episodes is starting to gel and I like where this is going.

Dawson's Creek: Pilot
(1998)
Episode 1, Season 1

One of the best pilots I've seen
Pilots are a tricky deal. They have to generate enough interest to hook an audience while at the same time set up an entire story arc all while introducing the central characters on a way that makes us care about them. It's tough to nail it but the pilot to Dawson's Creek is about as perfect as it gets. We get a good feel for who Dawson, Pacey, Joey, Jen are and even the supporting characters are pretty fleshed out. It contains humor, heart, and never seems boring or drawn out. The town of capeside (The beautiful Wilmington nc) is basically a character of its own as it's the perfect backdrop for a story about these teens growing up. I generally don't like teen dramas but I've always considered Dawson's Creek the expectation. It's highly underrated and I honestly think it's as good as a show now as it was when it originally aired.

All American
(2018)

Good God what happened??
I thought the first two seasons were actually pretty good as far as teen dramas go. It stole a lot of ideas from Friday night lights but I thought it was an above average show. Season three turned into it all into a joke real quick. The woke political angle this season goes against everything good entertainment should be. It's like the directors said "we feel our viewers aren't getting enough of this trash from the mainstream media and out divided country. Let's just make the entire show about it as well". A good show can balance a message with some subtlety to really be effective but this has gotten ridiculous. Not sure it can come back from this dumpster fire of a season.

Lights Out with David Spade
(2019)

Cant believe this wasnt renewed
In a sea of terrible late night shows (excluding the wonderful conan), this one stood out in a great way. No virtue signaling or political garbage here. Just funny people hanging out for a bit having a chat for half an hour. I'm sure if it were on a larger network it wouldve been seen by more people but it really did stand out. It has more of an old school late night feel where you could just watch and escape for a bit. I would love it if another network would pick this up because I would certainly be watching.

The Wonder Years: Pottery Will Get You Nowhere
(1989)
Episode 6, Season 2

Maybe my favorite episode of the series
This episode captures the love between Norma and Jack like no other. It isn't always sunshine and Roses, but it's always there. For me personally this episode always hit me hard emotionally. Maybe it reminds me of my parents but man they nailed it with this one.

One Tree Hill: Some You Give Away
(2006)
Episode 9, Season 4

The best episode of this entire series
I remember watching OTH and enjoying a better than average teenage show with my girlfriend for a couple of seasons before this episode aired. After it was over I was blown away by how much emotional weight it carried. I gained a new level of appreciation for how well made this show was after it was over. I won't go into detail as it's been covered here already but this episode really packs a punch and I'll always remember it as the one that solidified One Tree Hill as the quintessential teenage drama.

The Fugitive
(2020)

Really solid start
While the jury is still out on how this "Quibi" format is going to go over, the first 3 episodes of this show are extremely engaging. Granted, I have only watched 30 minutes of total show thus far. The acting so far is great with stars like Keifer Sutherland and Boyd Holbrook as the leads. For a show with so little content, it does a great job and making you care about what is happening with its characters. I still consider 24 to be greatest written television drama of all time so of course I came for Keifer Sutherland and really like the character hes playing here. Hes a bit rude and sarcastic which is a nice change from the Jack Bauer character we came to know for many years. I'll definitely continue watching to see where this goes but so far its as good as I could hope for a show that only has a half hour of content released.

Prank Encounters
(2019)

Please don't Tell me people are buying this?!
I love Gaten as an actor but this is no more "real" than stranger things is real. The "victims" are just amateur actors and it's painfully obvious, which makes the whole premise kind of pointless. What fun is it to watch people get scared when the scares aren't even real? I'm sorry but if your buying this then you probably are the intended audience for a show like this.

Batwoman
(2019)

I really really wanted this to be good
I was annoyed at people prejudging this show and was hoping they would all eat their words but my god this was bad. Like, embarrassing to watch. Two of my girlfriends were watching this with me and after every extremely corny line was delivered they begged me to change the channel. I watched until the end but I had to admit it was awful. The production looks very "cw" which isn't always a killer but this mixed with all of the cheesy one liners makes this feel like it's intended for 11 year old girls . Hope it gets massively better or this one will be cancelled quick.

Cobra Kai
(2018)

They outdid themselves
I don't know how they did it, but they somehow outdid the excellent season one. This series has something that's seriously lacking in a lot of today's shows and that's heart. I really hope this one goes for a while because it brings a unique feel to modern tv. Season two up's the stakes, up's the action, and up's the drama.

PEN15
(2019)

Wow this is surprisingly dead on!
I wasn't expecting to like this series as much as I have. You can tell that someone in the writing room lived through this exact time period as it is Dead On in what it was like growing up in the late nineties, early 2000's. A great first season to a great show.

The Passage
(2019)

Fantastic Pilot.
Yeah I have to say I'm not familiar with the books and wasn't too sure of what to expect but this pilot really took me by surprise. I could see this show being huge as the story starts to unfold. I was surprisingly moved in a few scenes and actually cared about what happened to some of the characters. I tend to not love pilot episodes for most shows but this one was great. I look forward to seeing where this one goes.

The Kominsky Method
(2018)

Wow... This show could be one of the greats
I've only watched the first episode so far but the quality and care taken in the writing show tons of promise. If this series keeps with the quality of the first episode then we're in for a great new series from netflix. I will update my review after I watch the rest of the series.

The Conners
(2018)

Wow this isn't good
I wanted to like the Conners as I've been a fan of Roseanne for years and I really love the Conner family dynamic. It just felt weird and awkward. I don't think I realized how important Roseanne was to this show until seeing this premiere. The way they handle her death seems uncalled for and strange. The humor seems more forced and sort of cringe. I do hope with time it finds its footing but I can't help but think ABC really screwed this whole thing up.

The Rookie
(2018)

This should be a winner
Just finished the first episode. I wasn't sure at first but about midway through I realized how much I was already enjoying these characters. Nathan Fillion is great in everything he does and the rest of the cast seems real strong so far. Im excited to see where this goes.

A Star Is Born
(2018)

Yeah it really is THAT good
I heard all of the hype surrounding this small film and was immediately skeptical as someone who is let down frequently by movies with too much early praise. I have to admit i was floored. The acting, directing, cinematography, and musical direction in this film is all Oscar worthy and I wont be surprised when it makes out very well come award time.

Jack Ryan
(2018)

Wow this was an unexpected surprise.
I'll admit I was skeptical after seeing the trailer for this show based on the popular book series. However, after giving it a reluctant shot I cant believe how off-base I was in my pre-judgement. It has suspense, action, and drama at every turn and the leads play off eachother very nicely. I'm excited to see where season 2 takes this and I can see this becoming a huge hit.
