Babylon
(2022)

What a waste
I had read this was a poignant look at the problems movie makers and stars experienced transitioning from silents to the sound era. What I watched was a totally unconvincing rendering of the '20s and '30s and a total wast of time. From costumes to hair-dos to dialogue, the filmmakers could not get out of the present time. From the total debauch of a party that opens the film to the sequence showing the technical difficulties the new should technology caused the movie crew and actors, each scene just fell flat. Truly one of the worst films I have ever seen. A waste of a good premise and of the assembled talent.

Road Show
(1941)

Bizarre
One of the most bizarre movies I have ever seen. I checked it out because I read about Willie Best in Quentin Tarantino's new book 'Cinema Speculation' and you really cannot find many movies that he was in. Besides an astoundingly racist bit ('The food is over there, the watermelon is over there...' this whole story is just too weird, even for a screwball comedy. I was sad to read of the fate of Carole. Landis after I watched the movie. I might have to watch this again and I am not sure I can believe what I actually watched last night. I am not all that sensitive to comedic bits that offend the current 'woke' mindset in 2023, but this movie really pushes the envelope.

Georgia

Movie-making excellence
Grosbard is my favorite director. Between "Georgia" and "True Confessions" I simply cannot imagine better motion pictures.

"Georgia" has everything right - the right cast, the right details, the right decision to show the entire spectrum of the live music-making process. Grosbard is so correct in showing us the two sisters performing entire songs instead of using more cinematic fades to elapse time. This is about MUSICIANS and you have to show what it is they do, and Grosbard has the audacity to show it in real time.

The last shot of Jennifer Jason-Leigh saluting the guy who bought her the shot of whiskey as she was performing brought tears to my eyes - not so much in empathy for her but in the realization that I had just seen a perfect work of art.
