The Nightingale
(2018)

Great but so sad
I loved this movie. The story revolves around the real "Black War" in Tasmania. As a white guy I feel so sad after watching this. Sad and very ashamed of all the terrible things some of our ancestors did. Our ancestors stole their land and killed many natives. If you are a people of color, I hope you can forgive the white race. We are not like our ancestors.

Review
I gives this a 7/10. Its an incredibly well made movie with intricate sets and good acting. I have never seen a SciFi movie with this level of majesty.

The movie though is let down by its script. This is a very capable director but I think he should have picked a better sci-fi story from the thousands of sci-fi novels already written. And not have written it himself. In the end it lacks satisfaction.

Brooklyn's Finest
(2009)

Unrealistic
Cope chooses to rob up drug dealers and don't even wear gloves when he ransack place. Also don't feel need to close door after he start looking for cash. Same cop don't think of financial implications of having 4 kids.

Other undercover cop becomes loyal to criminals he is supposed to apprehend. Same cop tries to assault female officer who wants him to help catch criminal.

Retired cop falls in love with prostitute half its age.

This movie is not very realistic.

10/10
I am delighted to add another 10/10 to my list which is a rare occasion. The filmography (check) of this movie is enough to see it, beautiful sets and scenery. Add a fabulous real life underdog story(check), great acting(check) and you have a delightful movie.

Leviafan

One of the best movies ever made
By telling someone how great a movie is spoils it in a way because he/she is going to watch it with impossible expectations. This is why I pondered my belated, humble and short spoiler free review of this movie.

I have watched about 3000 movies in my life and before watching Leviathan I have never seen an Andrey Zvyagintsev movie before. I am not sure I can even pronounce his surname correctly. Since then I have watched all but one of his movies and he became one of my favourite directors.

I am not going to write any spoilers but let me begin by saying that if you like movies with happy Hollywood endings you will probably not like Leviathan. Lets just say that Leviathan's story is not just very plausible but pure haunting pathos how one's life can unravel and fall apart uncontrollably. I have seen this movie about four years ago now and it still haunts me. Never has a movie affected me for so long and so much as Leviathan did. This is possibly because I can relate the tragedies and failures to my own life.

I highly recommend this movie.

Heist
(2015)

Action gem
I am rating this movie for what it is, an action flick. This is not the archetypal Oscar selects we see, no deep exploration of the soul or clever vignettes about ordinary people in ordinary situations. This is an action flick.

In that context this movie check all right boxes. Cinematography: good, sound track: good, acting is..yes...its also good. But what makes this movie a 8/10 you may ask, why group this movie with so many other supposedly profound films? If you are willing to appreciate the action genre, i.o.w give this movie a fair shot you will judge it upon its ability to keep you thrilled and guessing (the holy grail of action movies). And this is where this movie succeeds.

Above average
The ratings is not really doing this movie justice at all in my opinion. Technically its superbly shot and in this aspect the director has really done a good job. I just loved the soundtrack of this movie and it greatly blends and embellishes to again suit the specific atmospheres. Tracks of Lark, Vuvuvultures and Ske are featured among others. Acting is also above par.

The main issue with this movie has to do with its script that undermines all the positives above. As a man I was uncomfortable watching this. The woman are brutalized by a huge group of almost ordinary educated young men, her male therapists stay faceless until the end of the movie when he is also revealed to be a monster as the "breakthrough therapy" (with the "100% success rate") he sells involves murder. Again, like in so many movies men are portrayed as monsters. The generalizing theme go further when the lead totally reject all males after the incident and become lesbian. I was thinking about how hypocritical the whole movie and gaming industry has become. GTA5 for example is heavily criticized for its stereotyping of women, yet no sex is more stereotyped and dehumanized than males.

I did however realize that one may be a bit oversensitive about the stereotyping aspect. Reason is it would be difficult to make a horror movie without some degree of stereo tying. Also the victims themselves become savagely brutal in their revenge, killing some characters that did not do her harm. Is this the directors way of saying that revenge on this scale turns you into a full spectrum monster? We don't know because she is never caught or show any regret. Or will some viewers see this as a society that made her a vengeful monster playing into the hands of the male hating radical feminists? This is the problem.

Although a morose topic this is definitely worth watching if you can look past the possible thoughts of stereotyping.

Rammbock
(2010)

A refreshing realistic zombie movie.
In so far zombies go this is refreshing and comparing to other scenarios much more plausible. While in most other zombie movies the zombies are unrealistic, they are clinically dead but still lives, making it a fantasy movie you just cant believe. Rammblock though is a zombie for the thinking person, the zombies here are living creatures affected by a disease affecting their minds. Here are also not unrealistic super hero moments, its normal people trying to survive,. The acting is pretty good and understated with no larger than life overacting characters. All in all this is one of the better zombie movies and a formula I wish more of these films producers would follow.

Wer
(2013)

Best Werewolf movie i have seen
This is possibly the best werewolf movie i have seen. The werewolf character her impart a sense of loyalty, pathos and family. The acting is superb in my opinion and understated, especially from the main characters. This is one of the things that set so many foreign movies apart, usually no overacting. The werewolf in this movie is not evil in his human form, nor does he sought out the trouble that hunted him. It cultivates a sense of empathy. The story build up nicely to a climactic ending which leave you more or less guessing. There is a bit of art-house and bohemian air to this movie so its obviously not for everyone. But as a creature movie in general it excels, and finding a good creature movie is hard these days. The CGI is good and the soundtrack add to the suspense in a pleasant way.

Competent slow burn thriller even suitable for sensitive adult viewers
Plot: An intelligent college woman find herself alone at her campus over a holiday and chance encounter with strangers leads her to overcome almost insurmountable odds to survive a murderous cult in this survival horror movie.

Technical analysis: This movie has pleasant understated acting. Good atmospheric soundtrack that don't try to make up for a lack of suspense as you find in so many other scary movies. Although bordering on the realm of horror i would classify this more as a survival thriller. Thus you wont find any gore splatter or high body counts here which is refreshing for a thriller/horror that remains suspenseful throughout.

There is a Macguyverish element where the lead must outwit her pursuers and this is captivating in itself. All in all worthy immersion and even suitable for those that otherwisely shun horror movies.
