Love, Death & Robots: Jibaro
(2022)
Episode 9, Season 3

A piece of art
This is just incredible, I have never seen something like this in mainstream media. A piece of art. Hands down. Disturbing, tense, visionary. Absolutely creepy. Fantastic animation style and camera work. Amazing!!!

Love, Death & Robots: Three Robots: Exit Strategies
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 3

If this would be more on the nose it would be glasses.
There is no smartness to be found here. Extremely preachy message that you have heard 20.000 times already. There is no subtlety. Very annoying because I liked the gritty atmosphere of the art style.

Normal People
(2020)

Just absolutely brilliant
The performances from the two leads are absolutely astonishing. You see two people gravitating towards each other and away again. I have personally had a similar experience in my life and this show hit me like a ton of bricks. They capture how relationships like these are. They also stay very close to the book which I appreciated since it is a brilliant book. The show is quiet, beautifully shot and slow. If you can deal with this you will be rewarded with an emotionl journey that I haven't had in any show ever. Thank you Sally Rooney for the book and everyone else for the show.

Ojing-eo geim: Jjollyeodo pyeonmeokgi
(2021)
Episode 4, Season 1

I don't get the hype
This episode just shows again why this is not a good show. I am sorry. They had a lot of money and it looks and sounds good. But the writing is really ridiculous in some places. People change their whole personality in hours, this absolutely unbelievable hook-up of the two most annoying characters, People turning into animals because on one day they don't get enough food? Also the overacting is absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately this has often been the problem with K-drama. There is no subtlety. All it takes for a show to become a hit apparently is a lot of violence, a slick look and a nice soundtrack.

Legion: Chapter 27
(2019)
Episode 8, Season 3

Bad story choices catch up with the show
Sigh, I really adore Legion for its creative ambition, the sheer vision of it. But unfortunately in mid-season 2 it starts going off the rails and they could not end it in a satisfying way. I still can't understand how David is the villain of the whole show. It should have been told more multi-layered. Syd is definitely also guilty of despicable things (raping her mother's friend and putting him in jail for example) and also endangers the world by telling David about the end of the world. She is also easily manipulated by Farouk. They still go down the "David is the worst"-route. I am also unsatisfied with the sugary ending. There should have been more consequences for characters, Aubrey Plaza should have been in the episode, we should at least get a glimpse into what the lives of the changed characters look like. Painting Farouk as the caring father also feels like it does not fit with the previous seasons. It feels like they tried to make it fit somehow, like they came up with it after they already finished the first seasons. I feel like the show neede more episodes to have a better ending and to have enough time to wrap up all the story arcs. Still a great show, especially the first half of it!

Legion: Chapter 21
(2019)
Episode 2, Season 3

I don't like the way this is going
Well, it might be paying off later or they might twist it a little but I do not like that they make David the only villain in this. Sure, he did wrong but that someone like Syd is judging him is pretty ridiculous considering, that she also raped her mother's boyfriend and even let the authorities lock him up. She did not intervene. That is quite evil. Sure, she was a teenager but she never corrected this. She should come off the high horse on this. I hope, this brilliant show won't end with a "man bad" trope. Otherwise, looks gorgeous, has great ideas and awesome performances, as always.

Canvas
(2020)

Doesn't need words
Just a beautiful piece of art. The style of it is absolutely beautiful, I love that the "dream world" is basically ON the canvas. It is not necessary to have dialogue since it shows very well that trauma can paralyze you (figuratively, or maybe even literally?). Just a poetic, tiny heart-warming short!

Seuwiteuhom
(2020)

Nice premise, sometimes a little lackluster
I really liked this new take on Zombie films. To link the metamorphosis to a monster with trauma in the past is a great image of depression and trauma in the real world. Really great. I wished they would have done a little more with that. Unfortunately they had some silly decision-making, a lot of tell-don't show and sometimes a little over-the-top acting. Also some of the deaths (in some cases they might come back) of characters were just unnecessary and not logical at all. Also when the gang showed up they were a way over-the-top evil as well. I would rather liked to have seen more of trauma and how monsters are the image of everybody dealing with this. But I complain too much. It is well shot and acted most of the time, there is a good score and the CGI is mostly well, sometimes a little cheap, but it is a TV-show. It does not bother me. Also the kid actors were good as far as I can tell, not being a native speaker. What is sometimes bothering me a little bit is the rules of this world. Apparently you cannot kill the monsters but they still attack them with fire and so on. Why? They should rather trap them somewhere or something. People don't have to die fighting a thing they can't kill (the elevator-fire scene). But as I said, overall a good watch. Let's hope there is more of psychology and less of bang-bang kill (probably not).

Imawa no Kuni no Arisu
(2020)

5 for the decent first half or so
Well, the idea was very interesting and hooked me. Also the whole production looks pretty neat and was possibly made with a good budget. Already in the first episode you could unfortunately also see the problems of the show. The acting is so over-the-top at times that you cannot take it seriously. They completely ignore show-don't tell and over-explain every possible emotion that they are currently having. Then, with the beach plot, it goes off the rails. The characters become even more like caricatures, especially the evil ones. Probably for the teenage audience, the almost entirely young and hot members of the beach can only run around in bikinis. Then, the game in the beach makes everyone go completely crazy shooting everyone without asking why. You have flashbacks explaining why everyone is like they are now, which is sometimes hilarious. That dude sitting in his room all day becoming a sword fighter in a couple of weeks is as ridiculous as the dude being bullied and becoming a total psychopath. During the killing madness one former forensic scientist manages to find the time dissolving super glue and taking fingerprints of the "murder"-victim (!) to prove the real perpetrator. How she was planning to take the prints of people running around hysterically I do not know. The only character that was interesting in this was the blonde calm and a little condescending dude. He had a lot of presence on screen and was acted very well. Well, maybe I wasn't the target audience. Good idea, less than mediocre execution unfortunately.

The Third Day
(2020)

Sadly only one part is good
This show is divided in two parts that look and feel very differently. The first part is visually stunning, captures Sam's struggle with mental illness very well and just is fun to watch. You just have to have a mind that does not want everything explained to you. It is Surrealism. Just look it up! The problem was that the last three episodes are totally different, have a different production team and are significantly more boring and bland. I liked the approach of splitting a season at first but they did not do a lot with it and it just dragged. That is not the fault of Naomi Harris, who is great. The other actors are also solid in this. My advice would be to watch the first three episodes and stop. That would leave you with a lot of questions but you would only watch the good stuff. As someone who admires Dennis Kelly since Utopia I am really torn on this.

Zombi Child
(2019)

Mixed Feelings
It has a very good premise, this. I just somehow was underwhelmed by the end. It kind of fell flat for me even though the Voodoo-ritual scene was excellent. I like that the storytelling is a little slow with a lot of focus on cinematography. The movie is gorgeous to look at. I also like the editing a lot and the music (except "You never walk alone" at the end).

What turned me off is that they over-explain what is happening with her grandfather. They should have left that in the open. It would have added more mystery to it. Also, I did not like how easily Mambo was persuated to actually do the ritual. This teenage angst should not be reason enough. But most of all you could have done more with this than this very anticlimactic open end. This awesome setting of the boarding school could have been used for more than this, especially after the ritual. Still, Zombi Child is well made and interesting. They just unfortunately did not go all the way...

A Rainy Day in New York
(2019)

My first Woody Allen film
I can't believe but I have never watched a Woody Allen movie until this one and "A Rainy Day in New York" really makes me curious about his work. It is just so light, charming and funny with two great leads. At the same time the dialogue is witty and natural. Obviously we will not have a deep dive into today's problems, social commentary and the seriousness we have to have now in everything because this is not that kind of movie. It is a lighthearted comedy with an unbelievably charismatic Elle Fanning (who could have been written a little less naive) and an also convincing Timothée Chalamet. There is not head-heavyness, people don't ponder about the way their day goes so much. They just go on for the ride and see what happens next. It is a breath of fresh air. I also liked the way the lighting is used here. The music adds to the great experience. Thumbs up!

Tales from the Loop: Transpose
(2020)
Episode 2, Season 1

The first one was better
This episode still has all the elements that make Tales from the Loop so great. The acting, the music, the cinematography and the pacing are very pleasing. It just feels like poetry, like a piece of art without being too artsy. What I did not like was the story in this one. It does not really make sense. Teenage boys would not switch bodys with their best friend. It seems very weird. Also the reason why Danny does not want to switch back is a little far fetched. It was just not believable. It took me out of it. The ending went a little more into Black Mirror territory which kind of saved the episode for me but it still was not as good as episode one.

Tales from the Loop: Loop
(2020)
Episode 1, Season 1

All the best parts of The Leftovers, Stranger Things and Interstellar
I really loved this start to the show. It is absolutely beautifully shot with so much eye for asthetics. I also love the score. You can see that Philip Glass is behind this. This is a show that uses the sci-fi undertones to create a narrative that is about human emotions. So people who liked the new Star Wars are wrong here. I just really like the tone of the show, the slowness, the beauty of this. Acting is really good and authentic, it feels real. As the title already says it: it has a setting similar to Stranger Things, has the subtle sci-fi elements that are a part of Interstellar or Arrival and it has the emotional depth of The Leftovers. I do not know what is not to love about this!

Westworld
(2016)

One star is a joke
Giving this one star is like behaving like a spoiled brat. Yes, it has flaws in many ways, especially in seasons two and three but the actors, the production value, the music, the good ideas it has are enough to be a decent show. Unfortunately it just gets too complicated along the way and too Hollywood at the same time. And people really need to learn how to shoot in season three.

The Man in the High Castle: Fire from the Gods
(2019)
Episode 10, Season 4

Unfortunate
Well, the season and the show were good in many ways, the ending was not in my opinion. It is not just the nonsensical last scene with the portal that is problematic. It is also the fact that they kind of went full "good ending" with this which I do not buy. The BCR and the resistance were in no way strong enough to topple over two regimes with those few people. I know that they tried to show that the empires were crumbling but still. A darker, more interesting ending would have been worthy of that show. There were so many possibilities for this but they went with the easiest choice and then showed the stupid portal scene. Sadly they did not have season five to tell the story properly.

The Mandalorian: Chapter 6: The Prisoner
(2019)
Episode 6, Season 1

Going downhill fast
The last two episodes were already filler episodes that had an adventure of the week feeling. This one is ANOTHER one of those with additional cheese on top. It really did feel like a Suicide Squad with lesser budget. And we all know how that movie turned out. The gang Mando puts up with is so comically "bad" that you cannot engage in the story. There is a Hellboy character that is just agressive for some reason, a horrible overacted blue lady, Bill Burr (being the only one tolerable) and blue guy (who is also not a good actor). They prowl the same corridors for the whole episode and there are some good fighting scenes that we have seen already similar times in this show. In the end they do not have the courage to make Mando kill the gang but just to put the in a cell together. Very disappointing. There is no consequences for the overarching story, at least if they don't decide to bring back those idiots. Please don't and give us some story progression.

It Must Be Heaven
(2019)

A delight
If you have the patience for the editing style and the focus on symbolism without much dialogue then you will have a great time. I laughed a lot about this Tati-like observer watching one absurd scene after the next. The humor has a deadpan Jarmusch-style delivery that draws you in at first and then makes you laugh throughout the movie. Most of the scenes pose as symbols for European culture, the situation in the Middle-East and the lack of a proper home for Palaestinians. There are more layers. With one viewing you will not get every aspect of it but that is totally fine. It is still a delight.

Electric Dreams: The Father Thing
(2018)
Episode 7, Season 1

The first half was good
I really liked how the episode build tension, slowly build up the story and the atmosphere. The problem is that it does not pay off. It is a straight forward story without anything original about it. The ending is just bland and without any impact. They show trash trucks throughout the episode to show that they are doing the switch of humans to aliens throughout the episode over a longer period of time. It is just not really believable that there are no news reports about this at all. They have dumps with human bodies on it and nobody makes that public at all? Greg Kinnear is good as are the child actors. You could have done more with this since the cinematography, the feel and the effects were good. The story just was not smart enough.

Electric Dreams: Autofac
(2018)
Episode 8, Season 1

The best one of this season yet
Finally a really good episode for ED. The world was immersive, the premise was cool. I also liked the ending and the performances by the actors. There were no writing problems. Also the factory looked pretty great. Just a really good sci-fi tale.

Electric Dreams: Kill All Others
(2018)
Episode 10, Season 1

Not subtle at all
I did not really like this. The whole world they created is so on the nose. The one guy working with the main protagonist at one point actually said: "When did you last buy something? Go buy something, you will feel better." It cannot be more obvious. This is just bad writing. Maybe the scenario was too complicated to write it more subtle but Black Mirror can do it. I also can't really buy into this society. So nobody notices the phrase "Kill them all" repeatedly shown in several media outlets? Was it the first time when she said it on the TV or did she do it repeatedly? So he wants to ask the candidate a question on Live-TV and uses his phone from his apartment? Does nobody understand how technology works in this world? It could have been better with less going on and definitely subtler writing. Show, don't tell cannot be stressed enough for this one.

Electric Dreams: Human Is
(2017)
Episode 6, Season 1

Mixed Feelings
Well, what to say about this? Both leads, Cranston and Davis are very good in this. They have a good chemistry together, it works good. I also like the sets even though there is a problem with them. Probably due to budgetary reasons ED has been a little cheap on the sets. It all has a little grimier, more ramshackle look than Black Mirror. It is fine for some episodes but for this one it is problematic since it is set in 2520. Even though Earth might be devastated by some apocalyptic event or whatever but it just does not look like 500 years in the future. Also people talk exactly like we do today. It all does not fit together very well. In addition to that the whole setting in underdeveloped. There are some plotholes and they could have dived into some other aspects of the story and not just focus on the "Is he an alien or not"- schtick, which did not really work as a twist. Furthermore Liam Cunningham is way underused. He should have gotten more stuff to do!

Electric Dreams: Real Life
(2017)
Episode 5, Season 1

On par with Black Mirror
You cannot help but compare Electric Dreams to the mostly fabulous Black Mirror of Netflix. This one could really have been from there. A gripping tale about two realities and confusion about which one is the real one. The leads were very good, especially Mr. Howard. The look, the feel, it all fits very well. The only issue I have is that the dialogue is sometimes a little overexplanatory. But that is just a minor issue.

Electric Dreams: Impossible Planet
(2017)
Episode 2, Season 1

Meh
The initial idea of the episode was okay. I just do not like the execution. The male lead actor is not showing any more than one facial expression. Also it is not very well shot and looks like low budget. The story could have been way more exciting but they made it more boring than necessary. I also did not like this very weird connection between the old lady and the young pilot. It is never explained and feels far fetched. Like most of the episodes of Electric Dreams I felt you could have made it way better but somehow they got stuck to mediocrity with a few gems sprinkled in. This one is not one of them.

Electric Dreams: The Commuter
(2017)
Episode 3, Season 1

Interesting
I like Twilight Zone and this episode has the same feeling to it. The actors are great and the story itself does not need a lot of fancy sets to be engaging. The down to earth way of the storytelling sits well with the whole concept of the episode. The idea could have taken a little farther but it is okay the way it is. Also the end is a little underwhelming but it works fine in the context of the whole episode.
