Pathu Thala
(2023)

Pathu Thala
What is the biggest strength of this movie Pathu Thala? I know most of you would like to answer it as "STR" but it is the ONE AND ONLY AR Rahman for me. AR Rahman with his background music and songs has taken this movie to another height. That is enabling us to forget about the obvious flaws in this movie and making us to feel great about the whole picture. Ninavirukka, Namma Satham, Nee Singam Dhan are simply amazing. There are a lot of hyped scenes in this movie and all of them were lifted to a greater level with AR Rahman's work.

STR aka Silambarasan TR is obviously the next plus point of this movie. I don't think I need to justify this. The rest of the cast is doing their work but except for Gautam Karthik, no one has depth in their character. Every other character has been designed in a way that the character of Simbu (AGR) will be shown ahead of others. There is a lot of confusion about the other characters. The moment we saw Kalaiarasan on the screen, we know that he will be dying or sacrificing his life for AGR. How does AGR become this gangster or someone that some people hate and so many people love him. Priya Bhavani Shanker should be a strong character according to the initial parts but suddenly she is falling sick because of the lorry incident. Confusing and logical issues. There are a lot of gatekeepers to reach before AGR and none of them seems to be a strong character. For instance, Gautam is not making any big plans to reach AGR. The main villain is GVM and he is looking terrifying throughout the movie with his mannerism and dialogues. There is one scene where he hits someone so brutally and that itself is enough to tell you how danger he is. However, when it comes to the climax, he is just being killed just like that.

The biggest problem with this movie is that because of the lack of a proper screenplay, the entire movie is lagging. There was a lop of hype going for this movie saying it is going to be an amazing gangster movie. However, the movie is failing to meet that expectation. We have no idea as to how AGR becomes this gangster. This is another big issue in this movie. For an instance, in a movie like Nayagan (I hate to compare movies in my reviews) from beginning to end there is a logical flow as to how Velu Naicker is becoming that gangster.

Overall, you can watch this movie Pathu Thala as you will be amazed at the screen presence of STR, the music of AR Rahman, and the cinematography.

Dada
(2023)

Kavin can give a hit too
Dada is a movie directed by Ganesh K Babu and stars Kavin, Aparna Das, and many others. By the end of this year, this movie Dada will be one of the finest and greatest movies. This is a great start for Kavin as he has given the best performance so far. There is a lot of maturity in the way he handled this character. Aparna on the other hand has contributed as well. However, Kavin is stealing the show in many places.

The director has shown a lot of maturity in handling emotions here and there is comedy here and there to manage the emotions from an audience point of view. This is where the supporting characters (Harish, Bhagyaraj, VTV Ganesh, etc..) are playing a huge role. I loved the first scene where the director is showing two scenes. The main couple and there is another couple in the background are fighting. The director has got both Kavin and Aparna's performances in a subtle way. There is no unwanted performance or drama.

The director brought up the key problem within a few minutes which is going around the pregnant and everything else is going around. Also, there is no space for unnecessary masala (maybe one might complain about the song that comes from the trip these office guys are on. It can go to the category of just masala but it can be seen as a place where Kavin character is just throwing out his feelings and emotions through songs) fights, or punch dialogues in this movie.

One amazing fact about the movie is the way the director and the crew handled some of the important scenes. For an instance, in the scene where the character Sindu is suffering alone in the house, the scene where the baby is calling "Dada" for the first time, the acceptance that is coming from both Kavin and Aparna towards the climax, the subtle attempts the office friends are trying to do in order to make these two together, the scene where the father character (Bhagyaraj) is giving that money to grandson and how that kid is accepting in the second attempt and in the same scene how they have shown the maturity of the father and son bond. Fantastic! These are some of the reasons why I loved the movie.

The background score from Jen Martin (first I should do research about him as his work is so exceptional) is great. The songs are quite good too. The cinematography from Ezhil Arias is also a big plus point for this movie from the first scene itself.

In summary, Dada is a feel-good romantic movie with a lot of emotions. You might experience some issues with the comedies throughout the movie but you will forget them at the end of the movie because the emotions will stand out.

Varisu
(2023)

Good Start for 2023
Vamshi Paidipally! Thank you for Varisu. After a long time, we watched a family drama and entertainment from Thalapathy. This is a movie for all families and not just for Thalapathy fans. However, Vamshi has given a big treat to Thalapathy fans as well. As mentioned by the producer in the audio launch, this movie has everything that a fan expects from Vijay.

Let's go into detail. Let me point out the strengths of Varisu.

Yes, the boss. Thalapathy Vijay is the biggest strength of this movie. First of all hats off to Vijay for going back to a family drama. As expected, he has carried the movie on his shoulders from the beginning to the end. He has become an allrounder and he is just nailing it. Be it in the dance, be it during comedy, be it during emotions, be it during the dialogue delivery. He looks fascinating on the big screen and super fantastic. The director Vamshi has taken whatever is possible from Vijay in this movie.

Next, I love the story and how the director handled it inside the movie. The trailer itself revealed that this is about a family and the conflict in between. Therefore, the template of the movie is, at the beginning itself they are introducing the conflicts within the family and the conflict because of the villain (Prakashraj). The rest is about how Vijay is trying to resolve these conflicts and save the family. This is something that everyone can understand and everyone can relate to. They did not discuss rocket science or anything complicated. Another important fact is that within this movie the director has shown the different relationships to his best. The relationship between the son and mother, son and father, between brothers, between husband and wife, etc... I don't want to talk about any other movies but particularly in the history Vijay's movie, I think this is the first time we witnessed this much of relationships and it is obvious that the hero should resolve the conflicts. One might say that the story can be easily predicted but what's wrong with that. By the end of the movie, if you remember your mother or father or your siblings and if you understand that those relationship doesn't have a monetary value, then in my opinion you have understood the movie and what the director wanted to give us. Also, I love the way that the director wanted to entertain Thalapathy fans throughout the movie by bringing his old dialogues/scenes like "Cupu mukkiyam bigilu, I am waiting, Vaathi Coming, the dialogue about the love failure and the flower etc.." I loved them all. One might complain about the depth of the story but I believe that within the run time, you might not be able to go into detail and tell everything that is happening and why it is happening. For example, there is one sequence of scenes that explained the conflict within the family. (The dining table)

The music and the songs played a bigger role in this movie and it showed the efforts of Thaman and the Team. Most importantly, the feel of Ranjithame was super awesome. Thalaiva, in the last 1 minute and 20 seconds you have just mesmerised the audience. I loved the placement of the soul of varisu (Amma) song where it was more like a background song. Superb execution. The small issue I had with the ranjithame song was the placement. As the movie-going was going towards the climax, I was expecting this song to be at the end more like a finale. However, nothing to take away from the magic that was created by Thalapathy and most importantly, Manasi. (vera level vera level)

Hats off to the art director and the cinematographer. There were a variety of shots like long shots, closeups, and wide-angle shots and I believe that the cinematographer has just nailed it. Karthik Palani well done! The art director has done a fantastic job as well. For example, the house that is being shown in the movie is that huge and it is much more appropriate.

In summary, the movie has all the elements to entertain Thalapathy fans and families. Thalapathy has carried this movie on his shoulders. This is indeed a Varisu Pongal. Go to theatres and watch our Thalapathy and enjoy the Pongal 2023.

Chithha
(2023)

10/10 - One of the best in 2023
This year has been great for Kollywood as it delivered movies with solid stories and strong screenplay. Chithha is one of them.

"Chithha" is not just a movie, it represents a life. It raises awareness towards child sexual abuse and rape. I'd like to commend the director, Arun Kumar, for creating a film that delivers a strong message to society. The film portrays a beautiful dialogue that showcases the pain coming from the character Sakthi. Unlike typical movies, the hero doesn't hunt down and kill the villain, which makes it unique. This movie's success and impact is evident in the recent past."

Siddharth deserves praise for choosing this script and pouring his heart and soul into it. He carried the entire movie on his shoulders with the help of the crew. Siddharth's portrayal of different emotions is just amazing. He has proved that he is not just a chocolate boy anymore and he is a performer too. His expressions of joy with his family, his love for his niece, his pain when everyone blames him, his realization of the main problem, and the climax part are all remarkable. One particular scene where he shows the pain on his face while the little girl and her mom are talking about what is good touch and what is bad touch is a testament to his excellent performance in this movie. In summary, Siddharth has just nailed it!

The entire crew that acted in this movie deserves high praise, starting from Nimisha, Anjali, and the two little girls to the lady who was in the trishaw with the character Sundari. They have all played their parts to perfection, which is no easy feat considering the complexity of the script. Hats off to the movie maker for bringing life to these characters.

I would like to commend the magical work of the cinematographer Balaji Subramanyam as it gives life to the movie throughout. The songs of Dhibu Ninan Thomas are another strong pillar of this movie.

This movie is a must-watch for everyone. It has a huge impact that's hard to ignore. In an era where commercial movies and action scripts dominate the industry, Arun Kumar and Siddharth deserve a round of applause for creating an impactful and thought-provoking movie. Last year Gargi made a lot of impact and this year it is all about Chithha. (If you have not watched the movie Gargi, please go ahead and watch.

Parking
(2023)

Parking - Performance at it's best
2023 has been a great year for Kollywood as it continues to deliver movies with an interesting plot. This movie Parking is all about an ego clash between two gentlemen due to a Parking slot in their residence.

In "Parking," a young couple moves into a new house as tenants, makes friends with an existing tenant, and settles into their new place. The husband works in IT, and his pregnant wife shares a loving relationship with him. Their neighbour is a typical old-timer government official who saves money. The director portrays their daily routine as just life unfolding, making it an intriguing opening scene.

Eshwar and Ilamparuthi have a conflict over parking space in their duplex house. Eshwar buys a car for pregnant Aadhika's checkups, but Ilamparuthi is annoyed as he has to give up his 10-year-old parking spot. Due to their personalities, the situation escalates to an ugly, irreversible place.

"Parking" is a domestic drama narrated in a thrilling tone by Ramkumar Balakrishnan. The director takes the story to a much darker place, revealing the consequences of a hurt ego. The rock-solid performances of the cast, especially MS Bhaskar's character portrayal, add realism and emotional intensity. Harish Kalyan, Indhuja, Rama, and Prathana Nathan also give equally effective performances.

The constant clash of egos in this movie can become tiresome towards the end, and even though it's not a lengthy film, it does feel like it could have been 10 minutes shorter. However, this is a minor criticism in comparison to the fact that the movie is excellent from beginning to end.
