(2023)

Modern Disney
I had seen so many advertisements and tons of merchandise for this movie over the past several months... an annoying amount. I saw that it had dropped on Disney+, so I figured why not give it a watch? First impression: It started off somewhat slow, and the first song is easily forgettable. Asha seems like such a genuine character, looking out for her family, her friends, and her community. She looked up to the king who seemed to be a pretty cool and powerful dude, and interviewed to be his apprentice- one of the most prestigious roles in the kingdom. It's her grandfather's 100th birthday and there is a wish-granting ceremony. Surely it's his turn, right? Everything is not as it seems. Upon closer inspection, the king's intentions are less than pure and Asha decides it wouldn't be right to work for him. She sings about it and summons a wishing star from the sky. This song is catchy- better than the others. This star thing makes everything weird. Now the goat is talking- all of the animals and plants are singing and dancing. The star itself doesn't talk, of course. Everyone else in the town is still blissfully unaware that their beloved king is an actual garbage human. He sings about how great he is (who is he trying to convince?). Asha let's everyone know what she knows, then they all sing about "what they know now", including, plot twist- his loyal wife. They all turn on him, and live happily ever after. This film was packed with Disney Easter eggs, which I found myself searching for them after noticing the first few. Also, I think the message is great. It's okay to change your mind about something once you get more information. Stand up for what is right. Overall, I didn't hate it. Worth a watch!

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
(2023)

A Worthy Ending to the Indiana Jones Franchise
This movie exceeded my family's expectations by quite a lot. After the crime scene that is The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I was reluctant to be optimistic about another Indiana Jones sequel (with a now 80 year old Harrison Ford). I couldn't have been more wrong. This movie was two and a half hours of action, backed up by a solid adventure story. Does it get weird? Why, yes- of course it does. It's an Indiana Jones film! It takes us around the world on an adventure of a lifetime. In my opinion, this was the perfect ending to the classic Indiana Jones franchise and I am just so grateful that they made it. See it- you won't be disappointed.

The Little Mermaid
(2023)

I Didn't Hate It
I am not even sure where to start with this, but I guess I'll begin with the negatives. Flounder- terrifying to look at. I know they did their best to make him look realistic but, it just didn't work. The same with Sebastian but he at least grew on me after some time. Flounder is straight up nightmare fuel. A few cheesy moments throughout the movie made me cringe. Also, spoiler alert- Scuttle has a "song" and it is terrible. I can't really pick out any more negatives.

I loved the casting choices (more than I thought I would). Melissa McCarthy NAILED IT as Ursula, and Halle Bailey (in my opinion) made a great Ariel... she has a great voice and played her part very well. I enjoyed the little Jodi Benson cameo in the market as well. Prince Eric (unfamiliar with the actor) did a great job and I loved his song! The special effects/underwater CGI was better than I expected. I appreciated the action and darkness (that giant Ursula scene was as intense as it deserves to be). Overall, I went in with very low expectations and was surprised. It was actually okay and they didn't deviate from the heart of the original.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
(2023)

A Messy, Yet Satisfying Guardians Sendoff
I went in with very high expectations, as the Guardians are by far my favorite team in the Marvel Universe- I was not disappointed. It was messy without a doubt, but each member of the team had their time to shine, and the comedy was consistent with the other films. I LOVE Cosmo. When she was introduced in the Christmas special, I had high hopes she would grace us with her presence in the next GotG film and I was happy to see her back. GotG3 introduces one of the most vile and hate-worthy villains in the MCU, and his performance was outstanding.... But, The biggest star of this film was Rocket. We get to see where he came from and how he came to be "not a raccoon". We also learn why he is so emotionally walled up. Animal lovers beware (and everyone else, for that matter), this one will pull your heartstrings. It's an emotional Rollercoaster from beginning to end, but a fitting and satisfying ending to the Guardians trilogy.

Peter Pan & Wendy
(2023)

An Adventure
I watched this movie with my thirteen year old daughter the day it was released on Disney+, and both of us enjoyed it. I think it was a decent adaptation of this story (there have already been SO many!), and I'll probably give it a rewatch soon, as it's definitely rewatchable. The casting was diverse and well-chosen (in my opinion). Jude Law's performance as Captain Hook was brilliant, and I enjoyed the attention placed on his character's backstory. It was all around fun, entertaining, and full of adventure. To be honest, I even teared up a bit when Hook spoke of missing his mother (I lost my mom six months ago and it struck a nerve). Worth a watch with your family :)

Technology Has Taken Over
I saw this with my 12 year old daughter- we both loved it! To be honest, I had low expectations for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. This one keeps you wondering, and also has a very creative and fun method of storytelling- through the "eyes" of different kinds of technology. Security cameras, FaceTime, WhatsApp, laptop cameras, etc. It felt a bit like an Apple plug at times, but as an Apple/iPhone user, I wasn't bothered. We laughed, we teared up, we audibly gasped. The story was not so predictable (not to us, anyway), and had so many twists, turns, and unexpected connections that it kept us interested the whole way through. Technology is both our downfall and a useful tool in emergency situations. Worth a watch for sure :)

Strange World
(2022)

Fun Family Adventure
This is a story about a family adventure- even the dog! My twelve year old daughter and I enjoyed this one. It kept us interested the entire time. The characters were fun, relatable, multi-dimensional. The "world" and the creatures in it reminded us a lot of Pandora in Avatar... everything is colorful, glowing, alive, and connected. Not everything is as it seems. It's a story of growth, and accepting that our children are their own people. The poor reviews here- I guarantee they're mostly due to the harmless LGBTQ representation that some people find themselves offended by, as well as a cast of people of all colors... *clutches pearls*. It's a decent movie worth seeing.
