Funny, heartwarming and problematic Shaft is hilarious but it has some complex problems to deal with.
Those issues aside it's a fun movie, the chemistry between Samuel L Jackson and the younger Shaft was surprisingly good and less corny than I expected. The humour and the family story make this movie for me.
But sometimes it's hard to tell if it's a satire of homophobia and toxic masculinity or just homophobic and toxic. Men get teased for appearing gay, women get turned on by violence and Samuel L Jackson spends much of the movie being a cliche. But historically Shaft has been a cliche, indeed the original Roundtree Shaft set the blueprint for much of Blaxploitation and has always been a symbol of stereotypical masculinity, a "macho man". So it is actually quite a clever compromise to have the older, out-dated version of masculinity contrasted and tempered by the younger, more politically correct, less sexist Shaft. It would be hard to make an authentic Shaft movie without a problematic, ladies man in much the same way it would be hard to make an authentic Bond movie without the same.
Those issues aside I see why critics have issues, it's not the most realistic story. But it's not a gritty, realistic thriller, it's an action comedy with a heart and for me it scores high particularly on the comedy and the heart. A solid 8.
