What We Do in the Shadows
(2019)

careful..this is addictive
Go back and watch the original film. It is a 10/10. I also think this series is good, well thought out and refreshing, nothing else has ever come close, New Zealand, where the original film was from, has given the world a unique class of funniness that makes American humour fall flat.

Ultra City Smiths
(2021)

hello doll
Spooky , however, captures the mood and scenes quite skillfully. Jury is still out after just one episode, nowhere do i see it written that this is a musical, and nowhere do i see this advertised. It'll either catch on or not, i am an early adopter with this one, and will persevere for a couple more episodes. It has a story, and interestingly enough, character building, it does feel slightly tacky at moments, so it'll not be to everyone's taste buds. I do like the voices and the seamless experience. Full marks to the stop motion people, and full marks for originality, i just cannot help thinking while watching it, that this is just the beginning of a whole new way of tv series now we have a virus among us all. If so, bring it on, maybe a marvel edition, it's like thunderbirds without the strings. The only item i have seen up until now that comes close to this has been short films from eastern blocs and Europe. It is a brave move to try this, i hope it carries through, and will re write this after i have seen a few more.

The Midnight Gospel
(2020)

Greetings from the UK try to think outside the box
Try to Watch without judgement, and if you struggle, maybe try moving down a notch and go watch "My Dinner with Andre 1980" first. Then come back to this.... now write a review. I think evenings are best suited to watch this, for every story there within dwells a few life lessons of wisdom...and stupidity. This series kind of engages two sides of the consciousness simultaneously in a way that knitting while watching the TV does. You'll love it and get it, or you won't,

The Loss Adjuster
(2020)

dreadful score and stiff acting...but they stay in character, and the story itself is good
Very hard to stay watching something that seems awful. To those who did not complete the 1 hours and 40 minutes, shame on you if you reviewed it. Why?, because, as awful this film is, it has a story, which, in itself is quite beautiful. There are lost pointers, dreadful directing, awful score and frankly, one impossible to believe scene that goes on until someone arrives and cancels it. I think it is worth a gander, if you can manage to get past all of the above. The story itself i mark as a 8.5, the execution of it, 3 out of 10. We all know Joan Collins just simply cannot act, but you know what?..so does she, and that's what makes her tick and succeed in this. I would not watch this twice, but i would watch this once, and do not regret that hour and 40 minutes. One last thing. Immersive viewing comes in many guises, the people who trashed this film really ought to think before they vote, it is very one sided to cast down a film like this, without actually trying to understand the story, and one star simply does not reflect the time and acting alone, there are a few films on IMDB that are 1/10 and this is simply not one of them

Canadian Strain
(2019)

6 and a half to seven out of ten...nice to watch refreshing acting and offbeat
I think anyone who likes a little semi light humour will enjoy this. The different strains and their effects are a little hidden secret among users, Lebanese red i think is a real corker, but very hard to find. this, although slowish and kind of deadpan attracts me because. It rises above the normal every day movie. It could go on in the background at a party, and quite easily create a unique party atmosphere as people start quietly sitting in front of it and discussing the various subject angles, and there are many. It seems almost real, and i suppose has some facts inserted, try it out, you'll either like it, or bin it, but i left feeling i had not wasted my time, yes, a six plus plus out of ten for sure

I'm Thinking of Ending Things
(2020)

Prepare, reality within sleepawakens deep dark thoughts
Starts as a sleepy film, gets sleepier, awakens and then reinforces the idea that the sleepiness could have continued regardless. In between there moments that will connect in various ways to each individual who watch, or not, if not, you'll give it a 2 out of 10, if it does, then you may be more generous than i am. It has content, it has a (sort of) story that melds and changes into theatrical ideas, and some clever stagework of the drama variety. I liked many aspects , i would not watch it twice, yet, i feel almost awakened after watching. I am sure there are many aspects i missed, but it did challenge and defrost, which is weird, as you'll see, my brain from the every day norms, and so so films we get these days.

Mignonnes
(2020)

Netflix does not shy from controversial subject matter
Simply put, every film, and i mean every film ever made was made for a reason, i have seen some awful movies, and some excellent movies, as we all have. This movie is what i would term, a coming of age movie. It is not for me to judge how others perceive the subject matter, we all have our own inner beliefs, but i say the only way you can see society, and humanity for the reality of today, is to watch even the most extreme films. I wouldn't say this is in that category. I really do not see what all the fuss is about, other than snowflakers jumping on their high horses and telling the rest of us what, and how we should think. It was a fairly boring movie, the old age storyline of impossible things coming true and family life, growing up and school bullies. There was some questionable camera angles, but nothing too untoward, just camera work that makes you feel uncomfortable. There was a brief pair of knockers, blink and they were missed, but they were on a person who was of an age that was acceptable. I cannot recommend this film, for the simple reason it was boring. I would recommend it to a young person, perhaps in their early teens, as it might give them guidance to any issues they have in their life. Why netflix courted this subject matter?...no one else would touch it, and i think it is high time we accepted them for being so brave. They make reasonable content on the whole, not this time, but usually they keep people from falling asleep while watching with their content. Go watch this, and judge for yourself, i didn't see any hidden agenda, i simply saw some teenagers acting, and acting fairly competently at that, and maybe a few of them will go on to have a career in the film industry from this....that's not a bad thing...talent needs identifying at some stage, no worse than Hollywood has been in the past with the Shirey temples and Natalie Portman in Leon the professional, Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver, she was 12!,Brooke shields in Pretty baby..the list is quite a lot longer, i won't bore you any more.

Ruben Brandt, a gyujto
(2018)

Patience and a pause button
Nothing can really do justice within the normal vocabulary to describe this in any constructive way. Just watch it and marvel at what is possible within animation, and how a story can be told without a single moment wasted in dullness. There is really no beginning, no ending and no middle, the structure is left completely open and without any real story telling, just moments unfolding for a period in time and then closing credits when they should not really be. This can be watched again and again, and always something else appears as if put there , when last time it was hidden. Some language here and there, but not too offensive. I think that aside, even a child could possibly be captured by the weirdness of every scene and complete randomness of the persons features. Go watch it and come back and tell us all what you think.....

Le grand bain
(2018)

swim
This i am rating as my film of the year, it has got to be the most wonderful and well paced story i have seen this year, good pace, good acting and none of the usual plots. I recommend it to anyone wanting that little lift out of mediocrity, that something to pull them from the mundane day to day viewing. Watch it and you will come away refreshed and ready for another day on earth, i did not even know i was also watching the subtitles from halfway, and at the end the story told itself without words. Be you any nationality, you will connect with each character, wonderful and uplifting experience, oh, it's good to be alive

Something the Lord Made
(2004)

Excellence in storytelling
Alan Rickman rest in peace, was great in this but all other actors and actresses were also very good. The story has a feeling of being finished when you get to the end, the telling was quite calm and slow, the message was delivered with coolness and confidence. A film of mostly facts told that make you feel lucky that truth, in the end, always comes back to do justice to peoples actions. watch this and you won't feel short changed, it is a film any age group can relate to, and it is a film that will offend no one

Inside Out
(1975)

Telly Savalas nothing to not like
Very good film with very basic ideas. The authentic street scenes and close up acting were and still are very powerful and believable. Old world movie with a nice story and acting all round kept pace going well. A film you can watch then in another 20 years try it again.

Lost Fare
(2018)

cry, laugh, immerse, crudely made, excellently acted, well thought out
Watching this, you'll either hate it, or love it. It is low budget, and often outright awful in its language, and yet, the acting and immersing moments seem to shine through. Sure, it could have been made better, better actors/actresses and more money spent on props etc, but the violence and scenes were for me just right. The two young girls were the stars, and the overall scenery was fulfilling as a pleasant backdrop. I wouldn't watch this twice, but i do feel, that to have seen it once was worth my time and i would recommend this to anyone over the age of 17 or 18. i loved the scene with the furry friend, kind of apt to have such a normal happening in a world all messed up

Bad Cat
(2016)

Frizt the Cat with more humor and continuity
If you have watched, Fritz the Cat 1972 and liked it, you'll more likely also watch and enjoy this one. Bad language is flowing like a water-turd fall and toilet humor is rife. There is an overall moral though, and there is also a sense of order among all the chaos. I felt the poor zapped fella was hard done by myself, he didn't deserve all that beating. That aside, this is an enjoyable watch but not with granny or the kids. Not the crispest animation if you are picky, but you soon get absorbed into the plot and those failings soon get brushed aside and are more than made up for by the unique animated methods and rapid fire scenes and constant twisting mini plots and scene to scene shoots. The perspective the animators used i don't think can ever be emulated with as much success as was achieved here, it was quite something to feel my own chair move when i was trying to follow the movements on screen.

Phantom Thread
(2017)

Lacking in Material
Fairly well executed, yet not enough story line. One does get the feeling it is going somewhere, only to be disappointed. The sets and clothes were magnificent, if that ticks your boxes, the attention to detail will not disappoint you. There is an element of perverseness within the whole film, this only intensifies as it moves along. It is a slow death to watch, but bear with , if it is your subject matter, and you might go away feeling your time was not wasted.

Les valseuses
(1974)

Pink Flamingo, only French style
This film is not for people who take life too seriously, as some reviewers seem to have. yes, there's awful, despicable and unearthly goings on, yes, there is no "American style" moral to this film, no one comes out of this film in a good light. But, entertaining it is, and for a french film of this vintage, that is saying something. If you have seen reservoir dogs, or the godfather films, then you have seen worse violence than here, but this violence is more real, because it doesn't have that american slant of surrealism, with special effects etc. To say the things that happen in this film never happen is fundamentally wrong, they do happen, and as we now approach 2019 they happen with increasing regularity. This film is not false in any way, the eating in the canal house, the drinking of wine, the sex, the scenes of France of that era, all real, and all very believable, and that is where people might find it hard to accept, maybe it was a little too close to their ideas or/and experiences and as such, some might not like this. We found this film very scenic rich, and having visited many of the places this was shot not many years after, we found it very easy on the eyes. There is a certain amount of acting that can be taken either way, but i found much humor on the acting, and laughed quite a few times, i also found some scenes quite awful and would cut them if i had a choice, definitely one scene of the lady from the prison anyway. If you watch this, just remember one thing. It's only a film, and a good one at that

Je ne suis pas un homme facile
(2018)

Damn...Now i am hoovering, washing up, and ironing and singing to myself
Reversal of gender....done in a special and very clever way. Simple shooting, simple acting, no special effects, just literally a book come to life, story telling at it's greatest. Actors/actresses picked perfectly, and nudity dealt with as matter of fact, US film makers could learn a thing or two here. Nothing i would change about this film, however, the ending was very brief and left a big question in my mind....Can this be made into a series or another movie?...it does awaken both mans and woman's brains to how society has typecast us from birth, and begs the question to be asked, what would happen if?. 8.5 out of ten easily, and i would and will watch again in a few years. cannot wait for dvd release as i am told there might be a dubbed version on it

Same Kind of Different as Me
(2017)

How did this get missed 9.75 points
Where to start. OK, acting, out of the box, i mean, outside of it. Excellent in all ways, and very very underrated. I cannot say how this film is good really, but i can say there are no dull moments, no extreme violence scenes, except that one scene, and it is not violent really, just potentially so, not any swearing, none of the usual rubbish, this is a fairly deep film, looking at ourselves. The rating again, too low, how?, i am confused how someone can rate this so low, maybe the subject matter was too close to home, or too far from their reality, because this film does have the element of being real, and rightly so, this being more or less true events....

Cargo
(2017)

ok, 8.5 is what i would really like to put
Came to this movie with no expectations and really did not see this coming. An excellent and really catchy film, shot on a budget, and stiff of acting in places, but so well covered with a good and solid continuity and pace that by the end i had completely forgotten that. The silence at poignant moments was very nice, and the traditions of the tribe, to be shown in such a matter of fact way, although executed a little on the amateur side, we as insight that captivated me, the baddie was bad, the concept towards the end was comical, tragic, necessary, disgusting and practical , and coping with all these emotions all in the space of a few minutes was difficult, but, effective. How it is rated so low on IMDB is quite peculiar, i have seen films with higher scores that are not worthy, seems the point system has failed here, maybe some people just don't get it, give it a chance and/or feel for the whole subject matter. good film, i would watch again, anything i would watch again instantly garners 6 points, the rest is for....well, watch it, come here, put your thoughts down, raise the stars a little, it deserves it

This Must Be the Place
(2011)

how to live slowly after too many drugs
This film is a must watch. Without spoiling it, there is a scene after a rollerblading suited person stumbles, don't worry if you think you might miss it, it is a long scene and it reflects all that is good with the world. The ending is very very nice, and you will want to watch this film again, and probably once more, so, like me, buy the dvd, it is worth doing. I really did not look into the film before watching, so, imagine my surprise to see Penn as the main actor, i really do not like any films with him in, and then he does this, what was that about?, only he could have pulled it off, and with such confidence, not one moment did he falter in his character. I would not be the same person today had i not seen this film, it has firm beliefs in its making and delves quite deeply into what being human is, what we have been, and what we are, and how we process things, we can process them very differently, it is our choice, we decide how we react, maybe we need to take heed of this and make the human race into something more forgiving, no matter how bad the crime

Small Town Crime
(2017)

No small town acting
This is an excellent film, very well executed in more ways than one. I was surprised more than once and although the storyline has been used more or less before this film used it more effectively in my opinion. The actual filming and angles, mood lighting and attention to detail, the silence at the right moments and the gradual mood changes within scenes and simple yet effective direction make me want to see much more from both the cast and the crew, refreshing to see, and a film, although tired in subject matter, i will often remember

Columbus
(2017)

Insomniacs answer?
This film, obviously shot with architecture in mind, has a story that could be told in about 20 seconds. In effect, the film never actually starts. If you have trouble sleeping, and have about three spare sessions, or days, then watch this film, you will be cured, rest assured. The music alone sends one into a hypnotic spiral of wine induced sleepiness. This said, i did watch the whole darn thing, i did rate it more than one star, and there are actually worse movies out there. I would say, go into this one with your eyes open, but that might not last very long.

The Good Neighbor
(2016)

Tense mystery
I found this film slow. It was also unjust at the end, but it did leave certain life questions in the air which amounted to a great deal of thought provoking throughout. All acting was superb, all scenes shot were faultless to a novice like me, and all loose ends were neatly tied up. Reality rarely comes through as much as it did in this movie, this is one of those, "under the radar" gems that shines above the rest, and all the more so since no one has heard of it. I would recommend this for a quiet watch, uninterrupted if possible.

Oldeuboi
(2003)

Best Korean movie i have seen to date
This film has everything Hollywood lacks. Simply put, excellence has to be exactly that to come through when you consider a quarter of your time is spent with subtitle distraction. I find it comes naturally to read while observing the action, and one can always rewind if you miss something. I will not spoil anything at all, i will just say this. there is blood, there is pain, there is a sharp reality to the acting, and there is a sense that you got to watch it again some day. I came away from the cinema feeling satisfied and feeling good that not all films have a "just" ending that makes everything alright.....almost a reality in that, and almost a reality in some of the things that go on, sad, but us humans are a violent and devious lot, still, i am glad it is fiction and not a documentary, but sometimes throughout the film i did wonder...Oldboy, a film

Snatched
(2017)

Lightweight comedy for open minded some good moments
Do not expect excellence. I went in expecting nothing as the rating was so low. I came out laughing and quite surprised. I did not like the lead lady at all, i find her very distasteful. But her acting was OK. Any film that leaves me with a few stomach muscles awake from laughing is worth a watch. If you can get over your preconceived expectations then i could recommend this movie. It does insult many kinds of people and conditions at times, but it also draws attention to the realities of situations and how easy, fast and effortlessly people take advantage of tourists. I like the fact the violence is left to the imagination, this is more effective than the usual showing of gore for gores sake, which has become the norm, so this kind of reflects back to the days we used our minds to individually make our own pictures of a certain violent scene, so i would say the directing is at times clever. OK the actual writing overall was of similar situations in other, better movies, but this film had other levels within that just about worked, add in the comedy and it keeps you interested at all times, never a dull moment i would say. and the ending, well, the camera work was clever, an image that will stay with me for some time. It might be just my taste but this film does not deserve such a low rating

Broken Flowers
(2005)

Fall asleep but you'll miss something if you do
Bill Murray. Bill Murray. Once you understand that part you'll go into this one hour and forty five minute sleepover film prepared. Do not expect anything meaningful, instead, expect a pick up and put down book with audio type film. I recently have been discovering jazz, and what took me to this film was Mulatu Astatki and his style of jazz. Upon hearing it in a film i realised, "someone else knows this music", and felt not alone anymore. The high point of the film is many things, but nothing. As age creeps up on you, don't you too sit there, not moving, staring into nothingness, expressionless?, i do, maybe i can also feel, "Not Alone" on that one. There were many directions this film could have taken, none of them happened, and yet i came away from this film thinking, "am i better person for having watched this"?. Well, "am i"?. To be honest, i really cannot answer that one,, no matter how long i sit motionless pondering, maybe we should all sit motionless pondering whilst this film is playing and wonder to ourselves.Do go away and think about it, maybe come back and let me know how you get on. I can neither recommend or trash this film, instead i'll just say one thing....oh wait, now it'll come to me if i sit here long enough, won't it?

As an aside, is it only me who can see any resemblance of Winston to Astatki?,
