79 Parts
(2016)

Wacky Wigfest
This is a silly movie that is so big you are amazed it's an indie film. This is a movie for people that love the macho aspects of life and cinema: cars, romance, gambling and snappy jokes.

The movie has about fifty characters and lots of plot-lines so it feels long and short at the same time, I would much rather have seen it as a miniseries or some other kind of structure because each of the characters have their own potential.

By the end of the movie I was so immersed in the world and used to the pace I was ready for more. It has a binge-able feel of the first few episodes of a TV show on netflix.

There's really just a lot going on in the movie and I appreciate that especially vs some other ponderous indie films with their inverted gaze, pretentious use of fancy lenses and melodrama. This movie hits hard and fast and it looks fine, it's well shot but it has a totally different pace and tone than some self important indie film.

79 Parts is a fun movie made in a spirit that hearkens back to movies from the 80's. It has some real laughs and there's nothing about the movie that is lazy or cheap. I gave it an extra star because it was made for basically zero dollars.

Happy Endings
(2005)

Bad movie
The movie was very self-indulgent from the shoddy hand-held camera work to the disgusting titles that consistently come up like some sort of phone commercial.

My biggest problems with the film were the product placements. I'm not against product placement I'm very much for it but the product placement but in this movie was so stupid.

For no reason Kudrow is some kind of competent user of Final cut pro and the mac computer is now a main character in the middle of the movie. In her mac users paradise and empty apartment with just a table in a mac for some god dam reason she decides to leave the box for final cut pro standing on the table on display for the whole of the movie. Why her character unexplainable became an editor, I have no idea, is it a tribute to the usability of macs or a crap screenplay by a mac-o-phile, it could be either.

I walked out on the budwiser product placement. It was just too conspicuous. You have these pretentious characters so well defined and then you stick bud in their hands, those people would never drink bud, not those characters. It wouldn't be a big thing if the camera hadn't done all these self conscious product shots. Close-up and out of focus at the same time, like it was embarrassed at what it was shooting.

Steve Coogan was good and there were some funny lines. I like comedies and understand that for a situation comedy to work you have to make allowances for "unnormal" behavior and plots, but a lot of what went on in the movie was just stupid.
