Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
(2016)

The extended version is WAY better than the theatrical release!
I just watched the extended version for the first time yesterday and it is so much BETTER than the theatrical version. I remember the theatrical cut to be poorly edited, like some scenes were missing to make things flow better.

After reading so many reviews I decided to watch the 3 hour version and you can see how the story lines make more sense, how the characters' motives are overall more convincing. It also feels like a more complete movie.

This movie has it all : good action, amazing soundtrack, great acting.

Like many have already said it before, the main problem is Jesse Eisenberg. Not that he's a bad actor, but he was quite cringey in this one.

Highly recommend this movie!

Anything for Jackson
(2020)

Great start, falls apart in the 3rd act
Great start, falls apart in the 3rd act. It becomes completely different, as the tone, the "monsters", everything is just really messy.

You end up finishing the movie with no real conclusion.

It could have been good but I left disappointed.

Invincible
(2021)

Overhyped, bad animation, weak story line
I decided to give it a try after seeing such a high score. The voice acting is ok. But the animation and character design is really sub-par for 2021. It looks really low-budget. The colors are way too bright.

All the characters' costumes are colorful to the point it looks like carnival. Couldn't take any of it seriously. The story could have been written in one afternoon, literally.

There isn't enough time spent on the characters to build any feeling or empathy for them.

Apparently blood and gore = quality for most reviewers.

Headshot
(2016)

Disappointing movie, subpar action and plotholes everywhere
I loved Iko Uwais in The Raid and Merantau. I saw the good reviews for this movie and wanted to give it a shot. What a disappointment!

The movie tries to be deep : using Moby Dick references, calling him "Ishmael", but fails as it barely stays on the surface. Second, there are too many inconsistencies : the female doctor is too young, never works, sleeps in her patient's room, etc.

We never know WHY she has to go to Jakarta. Also it's never explained WHY the protagonist is shot in the head. We get flashbacks but it's never cleared out. There's one guy who speaks English, zero reason why. Everybody speaks Indonesian but him.

Now the action : poorly overly choreographed action scenes, with some hits that should have killed the protagonist 100 times yet he stands up and fights again. I'm talking about some guy getting shot, stabbed, slashed multiple times, doesn't seem to know how to fight in one scene, knows kung-fu in another scene, gets a gun, but tosses it, picks another gun, doesn't shoot it, but tries to hit someone with it like a bat...

Also, I know they try to make a strong tough female character but oh my, such a failure. I'm supposed to believe a 100 lb woman with a knife can out-power guys with guns? Also that girl uses an enemy as a human shield against an AK and doesn't get a single bullet hitting her? Wtf was that

The story is mediocre. Those comparing to Jason Bourne, you know they are not honest. Save your money, save your time. Watch The Raid again.

Swiss Army Man
(2016)

Fart and burp jokes, extremely uncomfortable scenes, don't watch with your relatives
I watched this movie only because of all the positive reviews.

Without going into detail or spoiling this movie, I will save you time. From the beginning to the end, the movie uses the fart and burp jokes. Literally, from the first scene to the last one.

Not only happy with the constant fart, there are some very low erection/masturbation jokes that last way too long. I felt extremely uncomfortable watching this with my family.

The dialogues are ridiculous, the story goes nowhere. I don't know what underlying all those reviewers saw in this movie. I saw none.

Don't waste your time on this one

The Autopsy of Jane Doe
(2016)

Excellent mix of mystery and horror
Without spoiling this movie, let me sum up my impression after I just finished watching "The Autopsy Of Jane Doe". I went out without seeing the trailer, so I thought it was a police/detective movie at first.

But it didn't take long for us to realize it was a horror movie.

Acting : excellent. Bryan Cox and Emile Hirsh play a very believable pair of father-son, working at the family morgue.

Story : very different from the usual horror movies. I appreciated it, as I grew tired of the same ghosts, zombie, vampire stories.

Directing : smart use of the shadows without being excessive.

I highly recommend it.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
(2013)

Delightful photography, magnificent soundtrack, very true actors for a slow-burning film
The trailer is what drew me to this movie and I can say I made no mistake in giving it a try.

The photography is sublime. Every scene was both simple in details and poignant in nature. It was very peaceful and easy on the eye.

The main cast was solid but though not a fan of Casey Affleck's voice, I must admit it suited his character very well this time.

The score carried the movie almost more than the actors at times. Daniel Hart's song "Ruth and Sylvie" was mesmerizing. All along the movie I felt the soundtrack showed a strong presence but never detracts the viewer by being excessive.

I won't say much about the story because the trailer gives away too much to my liking.

I would recommend this one as long as you keep in mind the movie pacing is quite slower than depicted in the trailer.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
(2016)

A comedy with cheap jokes which never truly takes off
Tina Fey as an American reporter in war-torn Afghanistan with a touch of humour? Why not give it a try! I told myself.

Fey's character is a journalist who, bored of her daily life in NYC decides to attempt to find meaning working in early 2000's Afghanistan. I was expecting to see her mingle with the locals, witness the culture shock, understand the Afghans. However none of that happened.

Instead we see her spend most of her time surrounded by military personnel and drunk reporters. Everyone is portrayed as grotesque caricatures, from the soldiers to the local population, even her co-workers are extremely one-dimensional with no redeeming qualities. It was very difficult to empathize with any of the characters as they were so cliché.

The story in itself could have been so much more. The abundance of unfunny sexual jokes gave the impression of lack of inspiration. The pacing was quite slow and the conclusion very bland. I left disappointed.

The Trust
(2016)

Good potential but fell flat half way through for a horrendous final
Most of you have certainly seen the hilarious bad photoshopped poster created for the movie. I gave it a shot as both Elijah Wood and Nic Cage are excellent actors.

What a disappointing surprize. Two law enforcement officers plotting a robbery. Not a bad idea. But Elijah Wood's character was written in such a way he made no sense at all. Unlikable, making illogical decisions, void of personality, he was only part of the reason this movie turned bad halfway through.

The score absolutely did NOT fit the movie. Most of the songs used were quite grinding and gave the wrong tone. Cage acted his usual screaming self, being over the top as could be.

I won't spoil the ending for you. You would have probably fallen asleep before the final act if frustration didn't kill the movie first.

3/10. Please stay away from this one

Outcast
(2014)

Horribly bad acting, non-sensical plot, worst accents ever for this snoozefest
I don't even know where to begin to review this movie. I knew it would be bad from the trailers but nothing had prepared me for this. My brother really wanted to give this one a try for a good laugh so we thought "why not".

First you should know it is NOT a Nicholas Cage movie, unlike what the posters / trailers show. He's barely present on screen. Hayden Christensen however takes the lead and you see him in 90% of the movie.

His stupid soccer player haircut coupled with his absolutely absurd accent makes the movie unwatchable. Cage's accent isn't even better. I don't know what they were both shooting for but it almost makes me regret having actors use an Irish / British accent for Crusade - Medieval movies.

The action is set somewhere in China but most of the Asian actors had an indistinctive American accent, save for that one child with a very South London accent (for no reason). It was more than immersion breaking.

Not a single character is useful to the plot. The action scenes are poorly made and I admit I fell asleep 5-6 times, my brother had to wake me up. He actually fell asleep before the movie ended.

Please, this movie isn't one that is "so bad it's good". It's so bad you'll fall asleep. Avoid at all costs
