Avatar: The Way of Water
(2022)

A cinematographic videogame without a storyline
The only reason I am giving this movie 5 stars, is because of the cinematographic experience. I was looking forward to see more of the world of avatar and I was not disappointed. I was disappointed in the lack of a story and how the characters were setup and developed. Pandorans were different from humans in the first movie, but in the second they act just as annoying. What was that whole middle part with the blend and very annoying children who had to perform some high-school drama? There were so many more possibilities to show us Pandora then through the eyes of a bunch of humanoid rascals of which no-one gets a 3D character development. All of the children were expendable.

I thought it was going to be a movie about people survival, planet vs planet, interplanetary politics, etc. Instead we get a discovery and war videogame with stunning visuals of a fantastical world in which some former killed colonel, back as an avatar, is going crazy on revenge.

This is one the biggest movie disappointments I have had. Very sad.

Family Reunion
(2019)

Pushed religion is not funny
Though I do see some similarities to 90's sitcoms, this show tries to cling on it in a forced way. In the end, we are watching some same old same old funny cringe worthy jokes as in passed times, but most are just cringe worthy. What were the directors thinking? Have a family move from the big city and let them learn that conservative thinking and acting with pushed religion is good? And having a broader perspective is evil? I felt awkward watching a family growing backwards. 6 episodes in, I am not sure if I will watch more to see if the tone is changing into something more positive then this. The saddest thing of the whole show is that the all credits up till now contained a memorial.

Most of the kid actors do show some talent (at least they have better comedy timing than the grown up cast), and perhaps I will watch one or two more shows, just for them.

Anne: The Better Feelings of My Heart
(2019)
Episode 10, Season 3

Oh please do renew for another season or ten
An unbelievable cancellation of a TV series leaves us hanging on a wire with this pearl of an episode that continues to thrill and excite at every second passing by, just as the whole series of Anne with an E did so well. All I am left with is utter confusion and the same amount of followup questions to write to Gilbert that Anne had for him in what appeared to be their final scene. I am gobsmacked that this marvelously witty and heartwarming show comes to an abrupt ending. I will miss it's dear characters, never came a cast so alive before. Writers, producers and everybody on the team, thank you so much for this wonderful experience and the tears, straight out laughter, beautiful storytelling administered by such wonderful camera work and music, and oh please do renew for another season or ten.

World War Z
(2013)

The movie was more of a history to World War Z book
Let I start with a comparison between this movie and the book the movie was after. The book was about the present, in which Gerry, the main character, is interviewing people about the long past WWZ, in order to write a historical book the war through the eyes of people. In flashbacks within those stories and through some of Gerry his own eyes, we learn about that war, how we fought and overcame it and how the new world is set up. In the book more than a decade has passed since WWZ ended. Too bad the movie missed all of the essential content of the book and does not even follow the line of the original flashbacks. Like that in the movie Gerry seems to be a good guy, while in the book Gerry is a jackass. It's more of a prologue to this book and I think a more appropriate titel would have been something like A history of WWZ. That being said, I do understand the choice to first draw the public into the world of world war z. The story's narrative is some tough cookie to chew and the way the book was written is too complicated to just copy that directly on screen. I do expect a second movie. This movie drew me in from a good 15 minutes watching and never let me down on that front ever. Once I got over the 'it's nothing like the book' I actually enjoyed watching a creative full on encounter with zombies while looking for a cure or vaccine. Do movie lacks, in my eyes, proper CGI and believable storyline (no background of the characters made them flat as well as the choices they made) with no proper backup of actors. The movie feels empty while you're watching a set of repetitive scenes that either included bad CGI hordes of zombies, dark hallways with lots of noise or empty, dark and misty airfields. The last scene is a stretched fast forward scene in which we get to see a bit of the world after WWZ has ended. Who knows the second movie will show that works more. I do hope that the next movie does make up a bit in story telling. It was promising and fun to watch, but it was lacking a proper built up of characters resulting in a flat story. Therefore I give this movie a 6.

The Umbrella Academy
(2019)

Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride
Wow, just wowwww. Everything, from character build up to story plotting, from super fitting music choises to perfect special effects usage, from tragicomical shakespearish Laurel&Hardy (Hazel&Cha-Cha) meet Macbeth (The Handler) to Pychon-film-noir-like to Adams way of proving the inerconnectedness of things wickedness, both The Umbrella Academy and Number five on his own meet a combination between the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who & Dirk Gently, gives you an amazing mind-boggling baffling adventure. Netflix already proved itself to be between the best of the best for some years, now they have started to up their game even more with productions like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and The Umbrella Academy. I would like to say well done and for the audience I would like to say to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Into the Forest
(2015)

At the end of the world, there's still love & lust to live
I was blown away by this small, gentle story showing amazing yet believable personal growth in all of the main characters while remaining who they are. What you see here is a complete normal family which faces some ought and weird circumstances. It really is a random situation and throughout it will not be made clear why all electricity is shut off including cell phone and internet connection. A day later the radio has gone dark, statistic is the only thing we hear...

The family we get to know is just a regular family living in a beautiful modern home in the middle of nowhere. The eldest daughter is a dancer and the youngest studies to get into some university. Their father is busy finishing the solar system he has build on they of the house. You see their story develop in that odd setting the end up in and it completely makes sense how the girls team up and learn to survive. The story is told in just the right rhythm to me, gentle and slow or unnerving and fast. The characters were all very well cast. Ellen Page has as special kind of energy and flow that I really like and she shines in this one. I loved the camerawork as well and their use of light. It was ecstatic at some point complete with the whole build up of scenes and sounds and so on.

I was taken by the feeling that this story is a story I can actually relate to. I could totally pitch myself in that adapted-to-my-own situation. And that brought a lot of inner thoughts and discussions with myself. It was tense and magnificent. A gem of a story. Let it take you away...

Entre Idas e Vindas
(2016)

It will just always sort of turn out alright
It's like the high ways and main roads in Brasil, life just doesn't pass in such a fast pace as in many other countries. People take the time to actually feel, think, talk, party, eat, drink and share emotions. This movies tells a beautiful story of strangers meeting each other and because of how life turns to roll out they become connected in all kind of ways. The cinematography, the acting, the story, the music and sounds are all poetically built up to a plot that gives me a nice (movie quote:) "crocodile feeling" inside.

Is this movie the best I have seen? Certainly not! But it's that feeling of a certain saudade feeling but in a happy, warm, fuzzy kind of way that is brought to you with the tail of "life happens, but it will just always sort of turn out alright" what makes this movie so special to me. I feel connected to this world of people and feelings and surroundings and culture that I don't belong to as I was born to a Dutch family in The Netherlands. I don't know what it is, but I feel saudades when I think of my disconnection with my world and the connection I do feel with Brasil and it's people (been there for a month, amongst others, but especially with one of my dearest Brazilian friend). This movie brings the same feeling to me. I loved that.

Imagine Me & You
(2005)

A little gem
I know I have to fill up 10 sentences, but please let me be clear. The title says it all and what a little gem it was!

From here on it's all just jibberjabber to fill up those 10 sentences.

A true sparkle, as a sudden flash in the air, came through the screen and struck me. This is a tail about true love.

The story never came across as mundane humdrum neither hasn't it mocked the obvious stereotypes as Hollywood always seems so prone to display. Perhaps in the most conventional way -as it is- but somehow Hollywood sees it as controversial, this story shows us the unfolding of something greater than life, namely love. The cast certainly loved this project and I can see that shining through the screen. The spoken lines, the body language, the laughter or even the difficult discussions, it just all came together.

If you can use a sparkle, if you want to be inspired, go and sit and watch this little gem of a movie.

Horns
(2013)

Like literature on screen.
Ultimate love story.

It's like literature on screen, pure and full of symbolism like Shakespeare.

A piece of art.

Thank for this wonderful little gem

I forgive you the ending...it's an American production right? So I forgive.

Camerwork, editing, visuals, actors, everything is just really well done with the utmost caring for this art piece. Too bad this movie never received the credit as it should have.

The Big Wedding
(2013)

Unexpectedly one of the funniest movies over the past few years
This must be one of the few rare American movies what actually delivered a feeling of recognition. It's not like the usual romcom. Life can sometimes become. It just does... and that it what this movie shows us. It actually shows us what life sometimes can be. It's reality. And that is what makes this movie so very special. Go see it for yourself. Just let yourself sink with the characters (they are very well portrayed. This is just the way family life is.

***spoilers***

The story line is very well written. It's the best one I have encountered in years. I gave this movie only an 8 out of 10 because while the elder part of the cast was definitely on fire, the younger part just didn't match.

Enemy
(2013)

Chaos remains as 2 unstructured story lines evolve
This interesting, film noir-like movie passes by gently like a summer breeze filled with exhilarating ambiance until you get stung by a bee. The feel of the movie is wonderful, as is the contribution of all actors.

If you like movies that leaves 2 contradicting plot lines, then watch it, else you may want to skip it. Perhaps reconsider not continue reading this review as I will continue explaining both plots.

The reason I voted a 5 out of 10, is me questioning why the director did not choose one plot. I am annoyed by that as both of them are intertwined and leaving gaps of the mistaking kind.

Plot 1, which feels to me as the most likely one the director/writer is telling us, is where Adam and Antony are both the same person. In this story the main character just has to come to ease with him stuck in the web of life whereas his wife is pregnant and him saying goodbye to his adventures with Mary. The wife than represents a spider making a web, the colour of the shots him dreaming away of what other life he could have and partially lived by sleeping around with Mary and the crack in the car window in the end of the movie is the spiderweb which holds/ brings everything together. Sounds great right? To me, It does not make any sense that his mum than just hushed him at the kitchen table 'oh let go of your dream of becoming an actor' while he explained her a the duplicated man theory and should have left his mother worried about his mental state. The other alarming gap was when Mary steps in the car of Adam, while realizing he is not Adam. Why on earth would you step in a car of such a creep? You just don't. You'd run.

Plot 2 however, has my preference above the other one, as it shows the cycle of life with history repeating itself with the first time it happens it's a tragedy and the second time being sort of slapstick (as referred to in the movie but I can't remember the latter one). Adam is an unhappy teacher with a dreadful relationship. The wife of Anthony figures out about Adam, meets him and therefore knows about the second Anthony which isn't Adam at all. Helen is puzzled and scared about of what will happen. Her husband sleeps around and she is everything but happy with their current relationship. Then, one night, she comes home and finds Anthony at home while he was supposed to be out. In bed she takes a few lines long glances at Anthony and realizes it's actually Adam. Before going to sleep she even gently asks him how school was and quickly says never mind after his awkward response asking the what question (if he wanted to keep the face up he should have immediately asked in return if she was mistaken him for Adam) it saddens her heart as she realizes that her husband has most likely taken Adams' place instead to chase a woman. He has done it once again. When she wakes up in the middle of the night she finds Adam crying on the couch being unable to look at her nor the situation. This is the moment she makes the decision. No more Anthony. Helen says to Adam 'please stay'. The next day she is the spider again and Adam stares at her, not scared nor surprised, just knowing he'd be happier in this web of life. The gaps in this plot are more subtle as this plot is yet undefined. They have not yet found out about the deaths of Anthony and Mary (the radio message is a mere coincidence). Helen chooses Adam over Anthony, she does not know him at all, despite Anthony being a giant prick, it is Weird. And than...

A giant question remains, will history repeat itself? Will another Antony/Adam show up? In the end, Adams' search started with looking for a Daniel... Substituting it within the search to Anthony, a stage name was implied. And I call this an implication, as I think there are many more Adams without having any clue where they come from and especially the why... If only the second plot were true, how intriguing would that be (well, except the giant spider images which have no addition in this plot). As history is repeating itself...chaos remains... which is than the pattern itself.
