Outlaw Posse
(2024)

Woof
I watched this movie because it was filmed in my state and my friend worked on the set. Some of it (like the main idea of a man who is an outlaw who is a bit of a Robin Hood) is solid. The dialogue is ROUGH and confused about its time period. It jumps from one era to another. The acting is...well, some of them are good and some are not so good.

But what is most difficult for me is the modern sensibilities written over the past (not that there are people of color in the past, that's normal, but the 2024 thoughts and feelings put in the past). The second most difficult part for me is how confusing the story is to where it makes no sense: 1. They go to Nebraska to give Decker one week to find his dad and the gold...then he finds his dad somewhere near Mexico...then they're up near Montana. Traveling is SO HARD BACK THEN. Can't be done in less than months. Montana is huge.

2. They have the posse killing people on their side during fight scenes.

3. The use of Native Americans is offensive. Often racist.

4. Playing the violin. That was rough.

5. Angel. Nothing about him makes sense.

6. Angel sometimes uses his fake left hand as a real hand.

There's more. But it's not worth my time to write down.

This thing is bad. It's hilarious, but bad.

Sense & Sensibility
(2024)

Not bad - I've seen much worse
I think people are losing their minds over the wrong things. I mean, are there better adaptations, mini series, and movies? Yes.

Are any of them hallmark? No.

This is one of Hallmark's best, mostly because hallmark wasn't super involved, this taking place in England with mostly English actors (finally).

Colorblind casting (or almost colorblind...they seemed a little conscious when it came to Fanny and her "step" brothers...they could have just gone full colorblind and been siblings) didn't change the production outside of the stupid way it made Edward a stepson...which changes his whole standing, but the actresses held their own quite well.

The only criticism I think holds weight is that a made-for-tv movie doesn't have enough time to tell the story properly. They had to cut or shorten so much that kind of kills the story for people who want it all - but much like the Kiera Knightley Pride and Prejudice, it can be a taste that gets people who've never experienced Austen into her world.

I didn't see this in other reviews, but my other criticism is in the dialogue. There were several times where the dialogue either falls flat or is just weird and doesn't fit the feel. I don't blame the actors for it - it's in the writing.

I also think Edward's way too modern speech to his mother (that's not even in the book) was wholly unnecessary. So unneeded.

Other people complain about the casting, which I think speaks for itself (side-eyes those individuals).

They complain about the outfits, which are a bit too elaborate for the poor we're dealing with, but it's *Hallmark* and they aren't capable of understanding time periods and appropriate clothing or hair (have you SEEN When Calls the Heart? Check your historical ideations at the door. They are obsessed with makeup, modern hairstyles, and inappropriate time period inclusions).

In fact, everything wrong with this film is typical hallmark. Rushing the wrong parts, misunderstanding the source material, not understanding history...

But if you're used to Hallmark's 🙄, then you'll see past the flaws and find an adequate and cute little film.

Wish
(2023)

So bummed
I tried, but I haven't been this bored in a Disney film since Soul (which was a snooze fest). There's weak plot, lame characters, and almost no effort made to give anyone any depth. Plus, I do not come from stardust, thank you.

Asha deserves better. The animation style feels incomplete, with the words not matching up to their lips. It felt like a Disney Channel Junior cartoon, but Over long. The music was impossible to sing along to or enjoy repeat listens of. The friends were annoying and supposed to be the seven dwarves, but weren't interesting in their own right. Everyone lusted after the king (which was weird) and I *cannot* with the moral of the story.

Someone with trauma from their youth reacts out of fear and control...and the result is eternal punishment.

Way to go, Disney. Way to continue down your path of "everyone deserves to be understood and have redemption." Apparently, that's only true if you're a horribly cruel grandmother (I'm looking at you, Encanto).

Disenchanted
(2022)

Cute - what I expected
Is it the original? No. But it still was a cute movie to stream. It didn't disenchant the original for me. The story was clever, but I think the weak point is actually the music. It's nowhere near as well done musically, and that's where it lacks most.

I personally loved the Badder song once I got into it, and the imagery was lovely.

I like that they got an actress who looks so much like the original Morgan, even though she is NOT the original.

I also like that the story is fresh and interesting. Honestly, this is also the first time I've seen the "villain, but not really" thing done WELL. Lately, Disney and the rest have been making "villain but not really" characters a dime a dozen, and none of them have been consistent or compelling.

Giselle and Malvena though, are fantastic. They ARE villains, which is what makes stories good.

So, except for most the music, I feel like this was a fun sequel. I'm not sure why people hate it so much, but maybe they expected too much from a straight to streaming sequel...(they must not have grown up with the straight to home video Cinderella II...)

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V
(2022)
Episode 5, Season 1

I'm trying really hard to love it.
I love Star Wars. LOVE STAR WARS. I'm doing my best to love this, and there are elements that are incredible, but there are weak points in the writing/CGI (and some acting) that are hurting the story.

While many others have referenced that the twist was inevitable, it was also too late. This is only a 6-part show. The slow and uneven pace is hurting the positives this show has going for it, creating an emptiness and even a bit of redundancy (how many times can Leia be captured etc). Plus the fight between Reva and Vader was like watching a youngling train, with Vader barely trying, which would have been great if they weren't acting like it was an intense fight...? Just feels like the whole show is a little misguided, like maybe they could have used a few more script edits before going to film.

I want to love it. I sort of like it. I wish it was better than episodes I-III instead of right in line with them.

Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab
(2022)
Episode 7, Season 4

Loving the ride
To each their own - it figures that you can't please everyone. However, I'm confused by the reviews calling it unrealistic...

This is a Horror Fantasy show about another dimension that's literally upside down. What part of that should feel realistic?

Loved the twist. Caught on just in time to beat them to the punch (my favorite) and can't wait to see the next two episodes!

Obi-Wan Kenobi
(2022)

I'm being kind...
I'm trying. I'm trying so hard to love this...McGregor is giving me 10 star material, the writing is probably a 7 (could be stronger but has at least been fun), but...

Third sister is ROUGH. Her poor acting and bad characterization combined are tanking this show. Four episodes in and even CGI couldn't help her (what was that saber work against the fighter pilot??). She's empty, and not in a scary way. I wanted her to get better and so far she's only gotten worse. I've seen the actress in other things and liked her, so I'm guessing it's terrible writing and she doesn't have what she needs to make it work - which sucks for everyone.

I can't wait for the character to die, and not in a "what a great villain" kind of way. More of a "man, I want her screen time to end..."

Sabrina
(1954)

Not for me
I love classic films, but this is one time I prefer the remake. All the characters in this are either selfish or cruel, including Sabrina herself. I don't like it. Give me Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond any day.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder
(2022)

Not good, not bad, just boring
I know I'm not the target audience, but I can consume media like nobody's business so that usually doesn't matter. I liked Proud Family back in the day, but the new one seems too...stuck? Like I don't think the jokes will age well. In five to ten years will anyone know what they're referencing?

It's one thing to have tour finger on the pulse, but if you want to be timeless, you can't firmly set your show into an era with certain slang and references (bitcoin, shark tank, influencers etc).

The characters are fine. Underdeveloped, unless they're Preachy Penny, and her family is even less dynamic than the others - fitting into tiny molds that don't offer much room for growth.

The first two episodes plots are thin and cringe. Episode three was fine, four was okay, but by then I was bored and haven't been able to go back.

If they continue, I hope they settle into either humor or story (or both), but right now they don't have much of either.

Serendipity
(2001)

What a waste of time
I feel offended by how stupid this movie is.

I hate everything about it. I love a good rom com...that's not what this is. Two stupid people who can't function and have friends just as dumb as them...all while hurting other people in the process. No thank you.

If you want a film where the characters aren't anywhere near each other until the end, watch Sleepless in Seattle.

Undercurrent
(1946)

The Movie that Started it All...
I can't be unbiased. This is the film that brought me into classic film - the first full film I ever saw on TCM. It means more to me than the favored classics. It gave me the greatest gift.

Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father
(2022)
Episode 10, Season 1

Sigh. You had one chance.
I wondered what people meant by "that scene" when they said this episode fell apart.

Well you know it when you see it. Spoiler!

He kills coach Logan, the deputy and the light of the whole show.

With that, it's irrelevant what happens next. First, that's so un-Dexter to do, and second, it just kills the whole season.

I no longer care how this plays out (though I know how this plays out). It just doesn't matter anymore. Line crossed.

Is it worse than the way the original show ended? It's more insulting. That's for sure.

So disappointed. I could have been fine with the ending if it hadn't been for that death. It didn't need to happen. It was a waste. It was a betrayal to the viewers. It would have been like killing Angel in the original series. There's plenty we can accept, but not this.

Never this.

Dexter says there's no other way, but he could have knocked him out. It's just lazy. Lazy writing. Lazy storytelling.

I'm so mad. The second star is for the first 30 minutes that were interesting. Then it all falls apart in a weird, badly written mess.

And why send Harrison away? He could have stayed and faced a trial. Who would find him guilty? He's fifteen. This makes zero sense.

Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Four - Village of the Angels
(2021)
Episode 4, Season 13

I'm trying really hard as a whovian
I really am trying. I'm binging Flux and am a little bored, but I'm giving it my best. They at least have improved Yas, who is no longer the worst thing to happen to a companion. I'm enjoying Dan as well. So far this episode is the most interesting, even if it continues the questionable idea of using Angels after Blink (no one has mastered their use since then. They took all of the creepy out of them in Angels Take Manhattan, though this one tries its best). The angels are at least giving plot advancement and some bit of entertainment.

Mostly, I hate the ravagers. They're so boring. I find them to be one big eye roll wearing ridiculous makeup (I cannot with their stupid makeup). I cannot express enough how much I don't care about what they're doing. I'm trying - really I am. But I just can't find any will to care.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
(2018)

Forgettable
It's not terrible (there's worse), but it's not good. Not memorable. There's some good acting, but some terrible plotting. It's not as bad as Oz the Great and Powerful, but it's in the same vein pointless and purposeless retelling. Where Oz was a total disaster, this one is at least colorful and has some big names doing a worthwhile job.

It's the kind of movie little kids would like, but then if they rewatched it when they're older, they'd be disappointed that their memory and nostalgia had lied to them.

He's All That
(2021)

They didn't even try
It's one thing to do a remake - but at least TRY to make it unique or well executed.

First and foremost, hire actual actors, not someone from Tiktok as your lead.

Second, understand the source material. The same guy who wrote the original wrote this one, and I'm assuming he knows Pygmalion. Why did this one crash and burn?

Third, if retelling Pygmalion, focus on the Eliza Doolittle character, not the Professor Higgins. Especially if the girl you have in the Higgins role CAN'T ACT!

Finally, people defending this film...hey, I like trashy films, too. We all have our guilty pleasures.

This film received so few stars because it's a remake that crashed and burned by putting someone in the lead who can't act.

If they'd had an actual actress in the role, it could have been a 5/10.

Alex Rider
(2020)

Almost perfect!
Aside from Jack, who can't act, and Yassen, who is way too old, this show was practically perfect. I loved the books as a tween and can't wait to see what they do with season 2!

Murder by Death
(1976)

What an odd and goofy film
Loved it. So weird and quirky. Probably helps that I've read a lot of the mysteries they're mocking. Is it PC? No. It's from the 70s. Almost nothing pre 2010 is PC. Calm down.

Like Cats & Dogs
(2017)

Two Trash Bags Meet
And I'm expected to root for them? They're horrible people, the acting is ridiculous, and the writing makes me want to cry (tears of rage). The lead girl, after being told how the guy's mom died when he was 12 and his dad not much later, cries because her parents have a great marriage and are healthy and alive - don't you know how much PRESSURE that is for her? So gross. Not to mention they both know he has a girlfriend and, while they're living together, decide not to tell her. And the guy has villain hair. Not sure why they wanted him to look like the guy from Willard.

I sent clips of this to my friends so they could cringe and destroy it with me it was so bad.

Hallmark, what we're you thinking? This was below the worst of your worst. (And I LOVE me some Hallmark).

Bridgerton
(2020)

Regency romance is rarely riveting
Let's be honest, I'm not the intended target. I find regency romances' tendency to ignore history for the sake of sexy intrigue to be tiring. Bridgerton, while nothing new or unique (gossip girl meets Georgian era), is fine, actually. The episodes carry you along all right, even if you know exactly what's going to happen. The cast is skilled, and I appreciate that the casting - while not colorblind - is at least diverse. It's not in anyway special, and to anyone with a critical mind it isn't much more than suitable background noise-entertainment while you do something else.

But I cannot abide Eloise. You cannot cast a 30-year-old woman as a child and make it believable. Every time she does something young I can't help but laugh. It's so unbelievable. The actress, I'm sure, is talented, but she cannot be seen as anything other than a grown woman. She has a deep voice, a mature face, and has done a fantastic job in other mature roles.

What we're they thinking?? It's. So. Bad. It ruins even what little the show had to offer.

30 Rock: Unwindulax
(2012)
Episode 4, Season 7

Most boring episode
Seriously. So bored. Also, laughable to have two wealthy actors arguing about ideas or money in politics.

It's always money. Both sides. Politics are literally run by people who have money, want more, and feel entitled to power to decide for the rest of us (who live normal lives they'll never understand).

And what is up with Baldwin's dye job?? It's not the right color.

30 Rock: Queen of Jordan
(2011)
Episode 17, Season 5

Sexual abuse isn't funny
That's it. It's not funny. It's not okay. Frank's storyline is insulting and offensive, especially for those who have suffered from actual abuse as children. The stigma of little boys not being victims because a grown woman is "hot" and how "lucky" they are? Disgusting. I almost turned the episode off, but I was hoping they'd redeem themselves.

And they almost did when Frank and the teacher got in a fight. And then they didn't.

They really, really didn't.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
(2005)

Worst film in the whole lot
It's so rushed that there's almost no acting, and they lose almost all of the story in the process. Weak. Bad. Disappointing. Everyone knows about the Dumbledore scene, but what about all of the characters cut? Or the way the actors literally talk over each other as if the director is saying "faster faster" behind the camera? Ugh. I hate this film.

The Personal History of David Copperfield
(2019)

Finally, something good in 2020
A feel good story that everyone needs right now. Loved every minute of it.

Psych: Remake A.K.A. Cloudy... With a Chance of Improvement
(2014)
Episode 3, Season 8

Brilliant comedy
The fact that they made a remake while acknowledging that remakes are never up to the original is brilliance. They 22-Jump-Streeted themselves before 22-Jump-Street.

So good.

Return to Halloweentown
(2006)

Bad move, Disney
You don't replace the most icon DCOM star with a new person, especially when the original actress is available for filming. Shame on you.

Also, the story is over dramatic and stupid. A college in Halloweentown? Okay. 🙄
