Mandy
(2018)

Buckle up for a dark nightmare
Parents take note! This is not your typical Nicolas Cage film. Although it starts off slowly with some character development, it is quickly thrust into a deep, dark, hallucinogenic, and very disturbing vehicle into raging madness and revenge. This film is not for the faint of heart!

Some of the characters are a bit difficult to understand, so it helps to turn subtitles on.

There is heavy use of color throughout which is reminiscent of many horror and slasher films from the 1970s and 1980s. Strobing and hallucinogenic effects are present periodically.

Despite the seriousness of the latter half of the film, small elements of campy humor are present where they are least expected.

This film is definitely over the top, but is one of those films which must be watched to the end to see what happens next.

Once Upon Atari
(2003)

Behind the veil of Atari
Howard Scott Warshaw does an excellent job interviewing his legendary associates at Atari who share their hijinks and misadventures while at the gaming giant during the 70s and 80s.

Being a child of the 70s and 80s who spent plenty of time enjoying classic games on the Atari 2600, this documentary offered a rare insight into what was going on behind the scenes. In the early years of the Atari 2600, it was a mystery who was programming all the fun, but we kids were having too much fun to notice. After accidentally stumbling across an Easter egg in Yars Revenge, I always wondered who this HSW person was...

This documentary introduces viewers to many of the brilliant and enjoyable personalities who spent their time creating the magic.

The video quality is a bit dated because it was release in 2003, but it plays well on DVD.

Parental note: There is a small amount of profanity and recollections of drug and alcohol use, plus tales of other shenanigans.

HSW also released a book in 2020 of the same name which goes into much greater detail and also covers the recovery of game cartridges mysteriously buried in a landfill (also covered in Atari: Game Over).

Taking Earth
(2017)

Decent visuals; Bad, but not horrible acting
The underlying plot was actually interesting, but the producers missed the target. It is not the worst film I have ever seen and I managed to stay awake through the end.

As mentioned by dozens of other reviewers, the acting is really lacking. Brad Richards (Garabon) does end up stealing the show as a psychopath who ends up appreciating the finer pleasures on earth. The IO's also were quite interesting because of rage elements and desire to go out in a blaze of glory.

Post production resulted in some very high quality visuals, both natural and CGI. This film contains some really wonderful scenic landscapes and mountain vistas that could be used by the South Africa tourism board.
